Gov:
Lots of spread. Don't get numb to these numbers - that have plateaued over the last few weeks. But they are still too high.
Thanks for local gov't & LEO enforcing my orders.
Also, thoughts & prayers to cops shot in line of duty.
Gov:
Vaccines are arriving. About 230k total coming next week.
Duke officials told us yesterday that the most common side effect of the vaccine in joy!
Gov:
Double down on prevention - for the health care workers!
"C'mon guys. We can do this."
Warning about scams. Crooks trying to get people to sign up on a waiting list. #NCpol
Cohen:
Moment of incredible highs & unfortunate painful lows.
>6,000 have died.
Record numbers in ICU.
All but 8 counties are red or orange.
Joe Castille (sp?) United Methodist preacher from Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Praises Cooper.
We've only offered virtual worship since March. The opportunity for people to stay home & be safe.
You can fast forward through the pastor sermon, too!
Rev. White (?)
We've been only virtual for 10 months.
Create celebration in the midst of limitations. Some of us have never felt this. But indigenous people & African slaves found ways to do this.
Outer Banks Today reporter Q:
Is there a reason why hospitals are not reporting data for the website?
Cohen:
97% of hospitals reporting. The ones that aren't are military - which have different regs & requirements. NC in a stronger position to respond than other states.
Gov. Cooper runs down case counts, hospitalizations and deaths.
There is real hope we can stop loss of life. First vaccines arrived. I talked with UPS driver who made that delivery - first in country.
We spent months prepping for this moment.
Gov:
We expect more doses next week after next round of approval.
Still need clarity from feds on how many doses we'll get.
Feds tell us weekly how many doses we get & we need more time to plan. VP Pence said they'd work on it.
@NC_Governor Gov:
As cases across USA rise we've seen rise in NC numbers.
We're shocked at some of these numbers.
News of vaccines has given us hope. We must act now to save lives.
@NC_Governor Health Sec. Mandy Cohen begins with the charts showing trend lines that "increased sharply."
(When does Cooper admin call it a spike or a surge - terms they rejected applied to NC?)
Gov:
Cases rising.
We're monitoring the data
Do the 3 Ws.
I have newfound hope in vaccines.
Should be available soon & our job will be to get them to people quickly. Our DHHS has been working on a distribution plan. #NCpol
Gov:
We'll get Pfizer vaccine which needs ultra-cold storage.
Vaccine will be free. Health workers will get it first.
Gov hands off to Health Secretary Mandy Cohen who starts giving latest numbers on:
- people who go to hospital with COVID-like symptoms
- new cases
- % of tests that are positive (now 7%)
- day over day hospitalizations
Gov:
Our numbers are too high and we cannot ignore them.
But other states are worse. They should be the canary in the coal mine for us.
That's why we limited capacity for social & family gatherings to 10.
Gov:
We're rolling out a new county alert system showing hot spots. But our entire state is experiencing widespread transmission.
Other states are seeing surges.
Ours are not surging. But it could happen quickly.
When the deal was announced, I said the GOP members should resign for voting for it - either for incompetence, an unwillingness to fight, or for their support of that deal. You make a mistake like that, and no - you shouldn’t get to stay on the board to make more. 2/ #NCpol
So, then the 2 board members resigned & issued statements. One said he felt misled. The other said he misunderstood the deal.
Are they lying?
Or maybe it’s as I said - they could’ve been misled AND have been told to resign. 3/ #NCpol
