28 469 South Africans are known to have succumbed to COVID-19 this year- amongst those were 436 public health care workers who paid the ultimate price in the frontline. #NYECandleLighting
Our health care workers continue to bravely fight this war even though they have been pushed beyond their call of duty. #NYECandleLighting
But we must remember that as the rate of transmission rises so too do the infections amongst health care workers rise. To date, we have recorded a cumulative 43 124 health care workers who became infected with #COVID19. #NYECandleLighting
Every time a health care worker becomes infected with COVID, we lose at least 10 days of labour, so desperately needed during this time.#NYECandleLighting
We may lose these precious resources for longer if they become ill and need to be treated and isolated for longer. We may lose them forever if they succumb to #COVID19. #NYECandleLighting
But more importantly, health care workers are not just labour for the health care system- they are active members of society, breadwinners, community leaders, counselors and role models. #NYECandleLighting
Vaccines have also dominated the conversation and we appreciate that everyone shares our sense of urgency to procure and rollout vaccines equitably, beginning with the most vulnerable in our population. #NYECandleLighting
However, I am concerned that the dominance of these issues takes away our focus on the things that will save our lives now. The fact is the virus will continue to mutate and there will always be a new variant discovered- that is only a matter of time. #NYECandleLighting
The other fact is we do not have a vaccine right now. The virus will not wait until these matters are resolved: no matter how fast we work. #NYECandleLighting
Therefore it is important to continue wearing a mask, social distancing, washing hands and sanitising. #NYECandleLighting
I must echo the President’s plea that we remain absolutely focused on what each and every one of us can do now to protect ourselves and each other. We know that, in particular, wearing of masks and social distancing are very difficult to do all the time. #NYECandleLighting
But this is why it becomes ever more important to focus our minds collectively on these simple interventions that do save lives. #NYECandleLighting
We have always said the second wave is going to be coming and the only way we will be protected is by developing herd immunity through vaccination. #VaccineStrategy
The only way of being able to deal with the #COVID19 pandemic is the provision of immunity through vaccination. We have been trying to follow what the best way is to deal with this. #VaccineStrategy
The vaccines will need to be made available quickly so that most of our citizens are
covered by the end of the first year of rollout - this year. #VaccineStrategy
Mkhize: It is important to reiterate that while this mutation is a cause for concern there is no reason to panic. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
Mkhize: Nothing will beat the rigid implementation of wearing of masks use of hand sanitizer and washing with soap and distancing. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
Mkhize: There is no evidence to suggest a need to change in clinical treatment and patient management of #COVID19 in the second wave to date. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
We have convened this public briefing today to announce that a variant of the SARS-COV-2 Virus- currently termed 501.V2 Variant has been identified by our genomics scientists here in South Africa. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
This genomics team, led by the Kwazulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform, or KRISP, has sequenced hundreds of samples from across the country since the beginning of the pandemic in March. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
Clinicians have been providing anecdotal evidence of a shift in the clinical epidemiological picture- in particular noting that they are seeing a larger proportion of younger patients with no co-morbidities presenting with critical illness. #SARSCOV2MediaBriefing
RESPONSE TO LUCKY MONTANA’S VARIOUS MEDIA INTERVIEWS
10 November 2020
Dr Zweli Mkhize has noted media reports by Mr Lucky Montana in relation to alleged donations to the ANC during his tenure as the ANC Treasurer General.
Dr Mkhize and the ANC have previously issued statements on this matter refuting the allegations that it had appointed individuals to receive and channel monies on behalf of the ANC, flowing from the PRASA Swifambo tender.
In fact, in February 2018, Dr Mkhize also provided a statement to the Public Enterprise Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chaired by Ms Zukiswa Rantho at the time, with a statement giving a detailed account and response to these unfounded and false allegations by Mr Montana.
I wish to take this opportunity to appreciate all the well wishes that my wife and I have received from you, my fellow South Africans, colleagues and friends from all over the world.
I want to assure you that we are improving each day. I remain in quarantine at home, I am resting and recuperating with only a cough remaining from my previous symptoms.
I’m also very pleased that my wife has been discharged from hospital today and will now be joining me for quarantine at home.
In a war, when an injured soldier lies down to recover, injuries do not remove his mindset from the set goal to win the battle.
