@emily_fri @chrissyfarr Finally. America is so intent on pretending we're close to turning back the clock that the country isn't preparing for the future. I spent many years working on disability and health law and policy. As a dual citizen, living in Canada I know how bad things are about to get.

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr SARS 2003 left was relatively short compared to Covid-19. Most of the transmission was in the hospital, with even the lead infectious disease physician becoming ill. PTSD hit hard and lasted a long time, even with support. This time the impact will be broader and deeper.

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr Canada has taken some steps to deal with the financial needs going forward. There is a new benefit for people who need to quarantine or have Covid. Those with no income can apply for 2 weeks of payment at $500 a week

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr If there is a child at home or someone with it recovering from Covid there is a 26 week benefit at $500 a week for people who qualify.

The US will need to address these costs as well as uncovered health care, assistance for rehab and medication.

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr They also have to assume people won't be able to return to the same job or return to work at all. How many people who spent years paying for long term disability insurance lost it when they lost their jobs?

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr Employers will need to be ready to accommodate returning workers under existing disability laws.

Housing may be an issue. There is always a shortage of affordable, accessible housing. Young people are showing up with strokes. Sending them to nursing homes shoudm be acceptable

@emily_fri @chrissyfarr The best strategy would be to ask Pres Biden to appoint a special group within his Covid group to focus on survivors. People with disabilities should be part of the group. They have the knowledge about what works and what doesn't work to help people find their future.
