Today, I published the 50th episode of my podcast. I started it in March of 2020. The podcast has 4.9K downloads. The YouTube channel has 4,700 views.
Here's what I learned.
Thread πππ
Starting the Podcast
β’ I started my podcast as an excuse to talk to people
β’ It was originally launched as a live-stream
β’ My logic was that I could collect email addresses and use that for a future newsletter
My First Guest
β’ My first guest was @petermartindc
β’ We live-streamed it via Zoom and 14 people showed up
β’ Live-streaming video is F**king hard
β’ You have to worry about people showing up and technical problems. Don't start with this.
Livestreaming Ends
β’ I live-streamed the first 10 episodes and posted the videos on YouTube
β’ It was a moderate success. I used the emails to launch a newsletter later on
β’ I transitioned the podcast from live streaming to pre-recorded
β’ Much easier and less stressful
Breaking Down Clips
β’ The other thing I did was cut the videos and post 2-minute highlights on YouTube
β’ This didn't work for me. Maybe I didn't do it long-enough or cut the wrong content, but this wasn't as successful as people talked about
β’ I want to try this again
Moving to Podcast
β’ Once I transitioned to pre-recorded, I needed a new platform and switched from Zoom to @RiversidedotFM
β’ I like Riverside b/c you can do video and audio podcasts
β’ I posted my first podcast with @jspector
β’ It has 105 downloads and 574 YT views
Moving to Twice a Week
β’ I got ahead of myself and moved to twice a week
β’ Big mistake. I didn't have the process down and started to get content burn really fast
β’ My downloads were moving up and to the right, but I wasn't enjoying it
Switching to Once a Week
β’ My downloads decreased when I switched to weekly, but quickly rebounded
β’ Remember, my podcast was only coming out once a week so my downloads should be 50% down, but only decreased 25%
β’ My audience was still growing
What Was My Podcast About?
β’ If you notice, I didn't talk about what my podcast was about
β’ To be honest, I didn't know. It wasn't until recently, I found my niche "The Attention Economy"
β’ I wouldn't recommend this approach. Try to settle on some type of niche when you start
What Worked
β’ Be consistent
β’ Own your niche
β’ Have good audio quality. People are OK with bad video quality but aren't OK with bad audio quality
β’ That's it. It might take 10 years, but you will grow if you do ONLY these three things
What Not To Do
β’ Don't compare yourself to others
β’ Enjoy the process
β’ If you don't enjoy it, you will burn out
β’ Content isn't an overnight success
β’ It's really hard
β’ Honestly, it took me 45 episodes to find my stride
β’ I recently hit all-time highs on podcast audience and am very optimistic about growth
Why Start a Podcast
β’ Start a podcast to learn about a topic
β’ Start a podcast as an excuse to talk to people
β’ Start a podcast for fun
β’ Start a podcast to teach others
β’ Don't start a podcast to be the next Joe Rogan
Podcasts Are Just Getting Started
β’ There are less than 1.5M podcasts in the world (h/t: @peterc and @sjatweets)
β’ 77% of those podcasts have released less than 10 episodes
β’ There is still a huge opportunity to build great podcasts
β’ Everyone needs to work, but not everyone is passionate about it
β’ Are people working because they are passionate or because they need to?
β’ Some people have lost faith in the system or can't find a job
How the Creator Economy Evolved
β’ The first collab house was started in 2009
β’ People developed content as a means of self-expression and/or creativity
β’ Influencer wasn't considered a "normal" job or a way to make money
β’ Now it's changed

Exclusivity as a Marketing Strategy
Ferrari doesn't want just anyone to own a Ferrari. "If anyone can walk into a dealership and get one, then it loses what makes it special ... for the model to work, you have to keep prices up.β
Their β¬3.7B in net revenue proves it works.
Be the Best At One Thing
Ferrari has won 237 F1 Grand Prix races. It's closest competitor has 56 fewer wins. Ferrari is first and foremost a racing company. Its success in racing has increased the demand for its road cars. People want to drive the best and the best is Ferrari.
1/ I grew my newsletter from 0 to 1,000 subscribers in 5 months. Here's how I did it.

2/ When COVID began, I stopped traveling and taking meetings. My business partner, @ChrisBerryOH, encouraged me to create content. I didn't have a focus or an audience but did have experience with content creation.
3/ One of my current endeavors is running the Cleveland Tech Newsletter. Each week I'd interview a guest in the Cleveland Tech scene. I was going to apply that same lesson to my new newsletter.

2/ Gary Dahl was employed as an advertising executive in California. He was at a bar with his friends listening to them complain about their pets. He had an idea.
3/ He joked to them that they should have a rock as a pet. He decided to turn that joke into an actual product β "The Pet Rock"
