#Covid will be controlled once the vaccine is rolled out. Right? And once we get more effective drugs to treat severe cases? Both of these involve big bucks for the Healthcare industry. Again a case of healthcare following the money. Billions of $ are being spent on vaccines
Billions more on research for new drugs but precious little is being spent in studying those who haven't got Covid. Yes, the answer to the Covid riddle may be in finding out who will not get infected rather than just knowing who will. Let me explain.
In this last year millions of healthcare workers in Hospitals and ICU's in particular have been exposed to #COVID19 . By all accounts the vast majority of them have NOT developed severe Covid disease. Some may have had asymptomatic infections and some mild to moderate disease
but clearly only a small fraction of those exposed to high viral loads day after day have developed severe disease or died. Why? PPE kits and masks could be one obvious reason but are they sufficient to explain away the miniscule incidence of severe disease in those most exposed?
Clearly there is something (prior exposure to other Corona viruses, aymptomatic disease leading to antibody formation, T-cell immunity etc.) that is preventing severe disease in them.Finding that "something"could be the key to the escape from the Covid nightmare.
Yet there is hardly any investment into this effort.Certainly, not even a fraction of what has gone into vaccine/new drug development. Why?Maybe because no one really profits if we found something that could render a sizable part of population immune to severe disease?
Why aren't we studying every possible aspect of the immune systems of ICU staff in Hospitals for patterns of immunity? Why aren't we looking for patterns in their clinical profiles?Why aren't we examining those who didn't catch the infection when the rest of their families did?
Yes, I am aware that some studies are being done in a few places but this effort is nowehere near what is being done for the vaccine production and roll out. Imagine if we found that due to some reason that we identify,25% of the global population would never get severe Covid.
