One of the big political debates of the day has been if we're going to 'run out' of vaccines in the coming weeks, as Premier Ford says Ontario is going to next week.
I crunched the vaccine numbers, and unlike Grade 10 math class, I'm going to show my work #cdnpoli
Two cavities. I did this on a national level because I can't predict how much each province will get but we do know the delivery schedule to Canada.
I also averaged the March Pfizer doses cause Fortin wasn’t sure of the weekly schedule yet but said we’d get to 4 M by March 31
Scenario 1 - The provinces do not increase their distribution capacity at all and give vaccines out at the 5 day rolling average (23,891 per day). If this happens, we still have way more vaccine supply than capacity. Very unlikely this scenario happens #cdnpoli
Scenario 2 - The provinces distribute vaccines at the rate they did yesterday, which was they highest level yet (38,318 per day). Again, there would be ample supply from the feds to meet the provinces ability to get the vaccines out the door #cdnpoli
Scenario 3 - The provinces increase distribution from their highest level (38,318 per day) by 10% each week until the end of March. In this scenario, supply would be meet capacity right at the end of March, just in time for more vaccines to arrive #cdnpoli
Scenario 4 - The provinces increase distribution from their highest level (38,318 per day) by 15% each week until the end of March. In this scenario, capacity would outstrip supply starting the week of Feb 15 and continue until a much larger vaccine shipment arrives #cdnpoli
Considering what Maj.-Gen. Fortin said earlier today I expect things will be a lot closer to scenario 3 or 4 compared to scenario 1 or 2.
So, at a national level, it doesn't look like we are going to run out this week or next at current rates. If the provinces are really able to ramp up, we could be running below capacity by the middle of Feb, unless the feds get more vaccines #cdnpoli
This also doesn't preclude from specific places (EX: UHN or the Ottawa Hospital) from running out. The provinces still need to get the vaccines to the places that can quickly roll them out. As we all know, vaccines are useless in the freezer #cdnpoli
Final point, everyone wants more vaccines yesterday, but I don't think we should view 'running out' as a bad. Next week, we are scheduled to get 379K vaccines. If the provinces can use them all in 3 days that's a good thing, even if we don't vaccinate for a couple days after
Also, I failed Grade 10 math and got a 52 in Grade 11 math, so please excuse any errors. I am a journalist for a reason.
My Czech math teacher Ms. Novotny would be very surprised to see me publicly displaying my work...

Dr. Tam says there are 14 cases of the UK variant in Canada right now #cdnpoli
Maj-Gen Fortin says Moderna arrives every 3 weeks, with the next delivery in Feb being for 171k doses.
For Pfizer, we can expect 366k doses per week in Feb. They’re not sure how many in March but they’re sticking to their number of 6 m Moderna + Pfizer by the end of March
Maj-Gen Fortin says the provinces will be able to significantly ramp up vaccine delivery in the coming weeks #cdnpoli
A technical briefing has just started on the vaccine rollout and approval process with Dr. Njoo and Dr. Supriya Sharma + Dr. Marc Berthiaume from Health Canada. Dr. Njoo says this will now be a weekly briefing.
Dr. Njoo says the needles, swabs and freezers are already being shared with the provinces, so they can quickly role out distribution when we get a vaccine. #cdnpoli
"When a vaccine is ready, Canada will be ready" - Dr. Njoo #cdnpoli
Dr. Tam, Dr. Njoo and Health Minister Patty Hajdu have arrived to announce the latest national modelling data. We reported on the projected case count and deaths last night but I’ll add some of the other data in the thread below #cdnpoli
NEW – CTV News has obtained a copy the latest national covid modelling, and it’s not good news
- If we increase our contacts, 60K covid cases per day by Dec
- If we maintain our contacts, 20k+ covid cases a day by Dec
- If we decrease our contacts, 5K covid cases a day by Dec
Some grim short term projections from PHAC as well.
By November 30th, there will be between 366K – 378K covid cases and between 11,970 – 12,120 covid deaths #cdnpoli
Dr. Tam and Dr. Njoo will have a press conference tomorrow at 9 am to present these numbers and take questions from journalists #cdnpoli
On @CTV_PowerPlay, @EvanLSolomon asked Health Parl Sec Darren Fisher 3 times if the ON Health Minister was correct in saying Canada will get 4 M Pfizer and 2 M Moderna vaccine by March.
Fisher wouldn't give numbers but said “I am not aware of where she got her numbers”
Alberta Chief Medical Officer Deena Hinshaw just said AB is anticipating they'll receive aprox 465K Pfizer vaccines doses and aprox 221K Moderna doses in Jan-March
So now AB and ON are saying on the record on this issue, but the feds won't confirm the numbers #cdnpoli#abpoli
Earlier today, @cmaconthehill asked Patty Hajdu to confirm if the Ontario Health Minister was correct in saying Canada was going to get 4 M Pfizer and 2 M Moderna vaccines by Jan-March.
WE Charity co-founders Marc and Craig Kielburger have just released a bunch of documents to the Finance Committee about the Canada Student Service Grant. Here is what we've learned so far #cdnpoli
Sophie Trudeau attended 8 WE events between 2012-2020 and her expenses, which were hotels, car service, and flights, totaled $23,940.76. She also got $240 in gifts.
This is on top of a $1500 on time speaking fee she got for one of the events #cdnpoli
When Bill Morneau paid WE $41K the day before his testimony to discuss his involvement in the CSSG, he wasn't given a physical invoice. WE just estimated what the cost of the trips were, and told his staff #cdnpoli
