Big Tech: Implications of Censorship to Africans and African Businesses.

Yesterday, I wrote about the implications of censorship from the political perspective.

@seyitaylor @africatechie @pyjama_ceo @greaterbayo @EditiEffiong @AffiSupaStar @gossyomega
(You may not agree with this 100% but you will agree at the end that we are collectively threatened. 🙏🏾)

From a business perspective, the implications are even more damning. Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google are among the top 10 most capitalised companies in the world.
They are all US companies with strong liberal agendas. Their revenues can funds all countries in Africa with spare cash remaining. Apple controls 100% of the iOS platform and devices.
Microsoft owns the Windows OS. Google controls 100% of the Android platform and all Android phones are useless without Google services and licensing. Amazon controls the cloud infrastructure of most companies, applications, and online services around the world
With 32% share of the market. Microsoft, Amazon, and Google together controls 60% of cloud infrastructure around the world. It is literally impossible today to create any online service or software or business without finding yourself using a product or service
from any of these companies. Them having these much control is a great danger for the world. It is worse when they are companies with obvious liberal agendas. It is worst when they exhibit clear signs of control, censorship, and dictatorship.
Parler is a conservative alternative to Twitter. They respect the 2nd Amendment rights of their American users and freedom of speech of other people using their services. They do not want to impose censorship as currently done by Facebook and Twitter on their platforms.
Parler is hosted on Amazon's AWS, distributes her app via the Apple Store and Google Play Store. Last night at 11:59pm, Amazon kicked Parler off AWS infrastructure. Google banned their app, Apple had already threatened to remove their app.
The worst part of war on Parler is Amazon's action which gave no time for Parler to perform proper migration to alternative services before going offline.
What is very obvious is the fine orchestration between these tech giants to go after conservative platforms and voices.
It is even more obvious because they waited to be sure that Biden has been declared as President by Congress before they started taking these actions. The events of the Capitol building invasion doesn't seem to be a trigger. They are all revealing their deep liberal agenda which
Is driven by most of their workforces who are liberals. These companies claim to be inclusive but it is obvious that their inclusiveness does not include alternative political opinions. Else why will these companies be succumbing to pressures from their liberal workforces
Who seem to now detect the political directions of the company.

Technology companies can't operate by being liberal outlets. They can't use their platforms and infrastructure to oppress other opinions and go after other platforms providing alternatives for people to express
themselves freely. There is almost 50-50 distribution of conservatives against liberals. Their actions are totally alienating and ignoring the way of life other half of the population of their users. Beyond all this, this has shown that the world is under the mercy of these big
technology companies. China has built their own cloud infrastructure, messaging apps, social media platforms which are independent of Western platforms and infrastructure. Africa must think the implications of big tech and their strong grip of the world politics and businesses
And how Africans can exert some independence from Western companies. What happens if Nigeria, tomorrow, insists on trade equality with Western countries and there is a trade war? Will their governments threaten us by withdrawing their services from us as they did with Huawei
We need to invest in our cloud infrastructures, social platforms, business softwares, workforce, and governance.

Breakdown of the Tech Industry and the Skill Sets Required.

I will start from the unseen.

Before you ever see a website (like Amazon or Nairaland) or an app (like Twitter or WhatsApp), there are infrastructures they run on. Those infrastructures are called servers.
The servers store the codes for the website and app so that they are executed when we open the app or visit the website. These servers must always be up 99.99999% of the time (reliability). Those responsible for these servers are called system/server administrators.
When you hear of website hosting. Those who make it happen are system administrators.
Server/system administrators must learn Linux administration, computer networking, DNS, etc. See this free detailed video for more:

My thoughts on censorship.
1. Those who support censorship always assume it won't be used against them in the future. Censorship is only loved because it is used on those you hate. Reverse the pointer and imagine how it feels.

#censorship #TrumpBanned #TrumpTwitterBan
2. Censors and supporters assume that they will always be in power and control, which is a very naive assumption. As soon as they lose power, they find themselves on same the avalanche they create.
If you can't imagine or tolerate the other side being a censor you should not support censorship.

3. Lovers of censorship assumes the censors will never become corrupt by their power of censorship.
