There are some of us that don't have the pleasure of being able to consume milk products like we wish because when we do, it is accompanied by diarrhea, abdominal pains and bloating.

Sorry my dear friend, you're lactose intolerant. Let's talk about lactose intolerance today.
Lactose intolerance is a common disorder and is due to the inability to digest lactose into its constituents, glucose and galactose, secondary to low levels of lactase enzyme in the digestive tract.

So when you consume milk, it contains lactose. This lactose must be broken down.
Lactose in it's original form is a disaccharide, but for it to be absorbed by your small intestine, an enzyme called Lactase is required to break it down (hydrolysis) into a monosaccharide. In those with Lactose Intolerance, Lactase is absent. So Lactose remains a disaccharide.
The osmotic load or weight of this undigested lactose disaccharide causes secretion of lots of fluid and electrolytes into your digestive system, and that's where wahala starts. This leads to enlargement (dilation) of the small intestine that induces quick movement of the...
undigested lactose into the large intestine. Now when this lactose gets to the large intestine, it becomes fermented by bactaeria and this yields short chain fatty acids and gas. The combined effects of increased water in the feces, movement of the poorly digested lactose, gas...
..leads to the wide range of symptoms people with Lactose Intolerance begin to experience.

Is interesting to note too that according to International Statistics, about 70-75% of the Worlds Population is Lactose Intolerant to some degree.
Lactose intolerance may be right from birth (congenital lactose intolerance) or developed from childhood (Primary lactose intolerance), or can even occur due to an episode of an acute illness like Gastroenteritis (Secondary Lactose Intolerance).

So what do you do?
Well, for lactose intolerant folks, be careful of milk and diary products. You can also choose to consume plant based milk like Soya (they're better tolerated). If you can find prehydrolyed milk, this works for you too.

Probiotics containing Lactobacillus helps too
If you really want to consume milk products and you can't help it, Lactase enzyme is available in drug preparation. When you meet a Doctor, you'd be given a prescription for this so you can be on the right dosage.

So are you Lactose Intolerant, share your experience. Cheers

I spoke with a Consultant on the shared percentage he receives whenever he performs a procedure in my facility, when I did he screamed!

But this sacrifice is why I, a small boy, can call a Consultant by 2am and they show up in less than 30 minutes.
Part of my training, from Childhood and during my Medical years, was respect and reverence for Senior Colleagues, I choose to reflect this in how I relate with them, and how I pay for the services they render to my patients.

For me, I'll choose relationships over profits.
We are yet to make big profit margins and all, however, I know that with the relationships I have with the best Professionals in the field, it's just a matter of time we get there. As a principle I choose long term gains over short term gains. It's bitter work though.

Thank you to all those who tuned in. For those who didn't, here's an ICYMI thread.

2020 is ending. What a year it's been. COVID 19 has affected everyone on the planet and it ravages on. It's time we are more deliberate about our health goals.

This is why we need a Health Diary.
A health diary is a personal health tracker and journal that tracks your overall health. It will include key moments about the state of your health in that time frame. Here are a few things that could be added to your Health Diary.
1) Hospitalizations: Were you admitted to the hospital? When? Why were you admitted and for how long? When were you discharged. These are important data for you to remember, especially in people living with Sickle Cell Disease.

Allow me tell this story well...

So a pregnant woman, after 5 years of trial to get pregnant, finally gets pregnant. When she finally got to term (to deliver) baby was in a wrong presentation and baby was big (known as Fetal Malpresentation and Macrosomia). We advised for CS....
aka Cesarean Section and this woman said "Ok I have heard". Just for her to head back to a TBA (Traditional Birth Attendant) who told her "Nonsense! You won't do CS! Come let me turn this baby for you so you can deliver by yourself!". And the TBA performed a procedure known as...
External Cephalic Version, a procedure that is performed only by OBGYNs and done under strict clinical monitoring.

After this was done, her water broke, and out came the umbilical cord, leading to Cord Prolapse and Compression.

They now BACK came to us for CS.. LoL 🤣

I always bragged that I was the type of guy who never misses a flight, having kept a track record of prompt arrivals for my flights for over 7 years.

Well, it only happened that my Village People were asleep on my matter then suddenly woke up on my first flight to the USA. 😭😭
So here's what really happened. I had just gotten US visa (more on this later) and of course I was excited that I was going to visit the United States of freaking America! I was looking at my passport like "I have made it life abeg". Man was well pleased.
So I packed my bags to get ready (carried two bags, one empty to be filled for the return trip) and then I booked my flight. At this point I didn't know that my village people had just given me a Social Security number which they'd use to track me.

I booked Qatar Airways.

We have been asked to sit at home because of the #COVID Pandemic and I'm sure most of us feel safe staying at home, but the truth is, the home front is where quite a number of health emergencies can occur.

By 9AM use this link but before then, a THREAD

Food poisoning is quite common in our home mostly due to poor food storage conditions (no light), bad food handling, and then people consume food just so it doesn't waste. Many people dey this table.

Symptoms include abdominal pains, cramps about 4hrs after food consumption...
... stooling, sometimes vomiting might occur.

To remedy this, it's important to some help meds like Imodium, ORS & Zinc, however should symptoms persist, call for Urgent Medical Care.

PS: Don't use Tetracycline, especially in children.

More on this later.
