BREAKING—alt-right insurrectionist who stormed the Capitol **while #COVID19 positive** has been arrested by the FBI near Houston. Tim Gionet aka “Baked Alaska” live streamed for 27 minutes from inside the Capitol & falsely identified himself as media.
2) Gionet faces charges of violent and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds and knowingly entering a restricted building without lawful authority, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

3) He told the world his positive COVID results just 2 days prior to him storming the Capitol.

4) I warned about the potential for the Jan 6th Capitol riot to be a super spreading event. Sounds like the real is now very real, in addition to the outbreak among members of Congress.

These people traveling to/from DC from across the US is going to seed so many more #COVID19.
5) Bottomline: I’m just waiting for the inevitable further outbreaks connected to the Capitol siege to be traced and appear in pockets nationwide.

As an epidemiologist, I’m worried it is not a matter of “if” but when. Stay safe folks.

2) This new E484K study is by @nicd_sa - respected research group. That said, antibody immunity is not all of immunity. T cells also offer spike protein recognizing immunity too (not measured).

Meanwhile—other studies on E484K immune escape—it’s in both 🇿🇦 & Brazil 🇧🇷 variants.
3) Why are we so worried about E484K? In another recent study by @jbloom_lab, E484 mutation (inside the #SARSCoV2’s spike’s critical receptor binding domain) seemed to escape neutralizing antibodies in 9 of 11 patients, some with 10x reductions in neutralizing ability! Image

BREAKING—new #B117 variant & vaccine data from 🇬🇧 research lab shows mutations in B117’s spike protein yields a ~3.8x reduction in efficacy of vaccine-generated neutralization antibodies compared to wildtype (WT) #SARSCoV2 strain. 10 of 15 people had >3x lower neutralization. 🧵 Image
2) Notably, @GuptaR_lab studied 15 people who had Pfizer mRNA vaccine against pseudo virus bearing Spike protein w/ mutations in B117 variant (del69/70, del 144/145, N501Y, A570D, P681H, T716I, S982A, D1118H). They found a modest reduction in efficacy.
3) paper pending—among 15 individuals with neutralisation activity 3 weeks after the Pfizer mRNA vaccine (immunity has already kicked in), 10 showed >3-fold reduction in efficacy of antibodies against B.1.1.7 mutant.

LET THIS SINK IN: So many people have died in Los Angeles that officials have suspended air-quality rules that limit cremations because current 2x deaths is “leading to hospitals, funeral homes & crematoriums exceeding capacity” unable to clear backlog of dead bodies. #COVID19 Image
2) And the LA County order says there's another surge of deaths that's approaching, fueled by the gatherings that took place over the New Year's holiday.

The emergency order will be in effect for 10 days and can be extended, the agency said.

2) In an affidavit filed late Sunday evening, agents said they were contacted by the former romantic partner of Riley June Williams, 22, who recognized her in footage shot during the insurrectionist attack by the British network ITV.
3) Williams’ ex also reported having seen another video showing Williams pocketing the computer from Pelosi’s office and told investigators that Williams had said she intended to send it to a friend in Russia who would arrange the transfer to the SVR, Russian equivalent of CIA.
