Patients are my greatest teachers & recently I’ve had a patient unexpectedly become one of my biggest cheerleaders - a 🧵
Over the past few mths, I’ve been providing #PalliCare to a patient whose elderly body is ailing them while their mind remains extraordinary & vibrant. 1/
During our visits at their home, I’ve learned that they immigrated to Canada bringing with them diverse life experiences, spending their adult lifetime in academia. They live alone, so upon realizing how big of a nerd I am, they have generously shared their passions & slivers 2/
of their vast knowledge & wisdom with me. Even assigning me homework! Each visit I leave inspired, wishing I had taken notes during these precious conversations. It is an incredible honour to share time with them caring for their body/mind/spirit. I always look forward to it. 3/
During visits last year, I revealed that I had been working on a collaborative research project with #paramedic peers of mine from across #Canada. Surrounding ‘progressing paramedics’ role in grief’. They humored my passion discussing the topic with me during care visits. 4/
Though I’ve previously contributed written work to other platforms, this project is the first time I’ve collaborated on peer reviewed work. It’s new territory for me. At our last visit, my patient insisted I tell them when the work is published, as they’re eager to read it. 5/
Will visit them tomorrow & I am thrilled to be bringing them a copy of the work. It’s been an incredible experience working with a team of brilliant humans on the piece - @cherylcookie21@cjlanos@alan_batt - cherry on top will be my patient’s smile as I hand them the paper. 6/
I have learned more from this patient than I will likely realize. It’s incredible when your patients become part of your village supporting you as much as you care for them, if not more - this forever motivates my work progressing patient-centered #equitable#healthcare 7/
