Yesterday Belgium reported 2,444 new cases (1/10 of peak) and 55 deaths.

Starting Wednesday, Belgium will close their borders to non-essential travel in an attempt to limit the spread of new variants.

Spain cases increase rapidly, yesterday 42,885 new cases and 400 deaths. Trajectory is similar to that of Portugal (see yesterday’s update).
Zimbabwe is battling an outbreak that grew rapidly in December. Cases and test positivity are beginning to decline.

Cases are down to 60% of peak.
Just this week, Zimbabwe lost two government ministers to covid, making a total of four government officials to have died of the virus so far.

Today they announced they’ll be strengthening their lockdown measures.

Lebanon begins to see cases decrease. Yesterday they reported 3,220 new cases and 57 deaths.

Their reactive strategy has proven to be insufficient, as hospitals are out of beds and extremely low on resources.

Great news: Almost every region in India is seeing decreasing cases.

Currently 11 “winning” regions, reporting less than 20 cases per day, Manipur being the most recent to join. Last of the NE states not in this category is Assam, very close at 24 new/day. Image
There are currently 23 yellow, or “nearly there”, regions, and only 2 red regions which “need action”.

Only one region in India is seeing a substantial increase in cases: Kerala, early it was a success.

US improves, primarily in California, where daily cases dropped from 45,000 to 25,000 over last two weeks. Los Angeles accounts for most of the change.

The daily death toll remains very high, averaging 3,700 per day. ImageImageImageImage

Northeast India

Northeast India with 8 states and 45 million people has been improving in COVID cases.

Manipur has just reached our “Winners” category with under 20 cases per day. Congratulations!

Ireland has continued success with declining case rates, suggesting containment is possible despite having a high level of UK variant.

They recently decided to extend current restrictions “well into February”.

Portugal’s condition becomes dire as they begin their battle against the more transmissible UK variant.

Yesterday they reported 13,544 cases and 221 deaths. Test positivity is at 18% and climbing rapidly.

To put the Portugal numbers into perspective, compare per capita case and death rates with those from the US.

Denmark is sequencing all coronavirus samples and has an alarming view of the U.K. variant

Iceland success:

- 5 new cases yesterday (it would be good have report of how many are pre-quarantined)
- 29 total deaths. None this year.
Brazil continues to battle the new variant, cases and deaths are high.

The celebration of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro has been canceled.
In Massachusetts, Gov Charlie Baker (@MassGovernor), declared today that he will loosen restrictions, citing decreasing test positivity and decreasing hospitalizations. A step in the wrong direction.

Note the small decrease in hospitalizations.

Some countries are in severe crisis mode, but recently many countries are improving. Today we highlight the countries that are now less than 20% of their peak in new cases. Not only are these countries succeeding, but this is a significant shift in the global situation.
At EndCoronavirus.org/countries, we sort countries into three categories: “winning”, “nearly there”, “needs action”

“Winning” report very few new cases
“Nearly there” made significant progress reducing cases, less than 20% of peak
“Needs action” are those that haven’t gotten there
Recently more countries became “nearly there,” the number increased from 10 to 25 in a month, with almost all of them coming from the “needs action.” Let’s look at what is happening.
