"...what I’m talking about is setting up a sleeper cell, just like our Founding Fathers did "
I found a website apparently by former CIA Officer Jason Hanson encouraging 'patriots' to create sleeper cells & promoting a "step-by-step blueprint" book.
Join me on a wild THREAD 1/
2/ I came across Jason Hanson while looking a right wing content @YouTube. He was promoting "Sleeper Cell Secrets By Spies And Our Founding Fathers." Ultimately, YouTube served me multiple advertisements. I found the title jarring, so I began digging...
3/ Turns out Jason has not avoided the limelight. He's been on popular shows like @ABCSharkTank. He's got plenty of books on @amazon...But "Sleeper Cell Secrets..." is notably not on there.
4/ ... Back to the book. Clicking through @YouTube advertisements sends you to a sales-lead style page where our author asserts you should be afraid that America will go socialist... and thus why you need to know how to set up a "sleeper cell" of "like-minded patriots"
5/...why sleeper cells are not sinful & how to "wake the sleeping giant"...but also: spotting infiltrators, using cutouts, setting up clandestine meetings, tamper detection, etc.
All in a mix of that-one-trick-doctors-hate advertising copy & spookspeak.
6/ It's yours 'free'..for a mere $9.95 Shipping and handling.
Testament to how normalized radical language is in America right now:
-Advertise a sleeper cell how-to on @YouTube
-Run click funnel / advertising leads generation for it.
7/ Does anyone take the book seriously? Is it being used? No idea...
But a little digging yielded a commentator recommending the book in the comments of "How to start a militia," a video hosted on an "uncensored" video site.
8/ Winding this up: "Sleeper Cell Secrets" order page shares
9/ "Sleeper Cell Secrets" testimonials features quotes attributed to folks like @CIA vet Peter Earnest, Founding Exec. Director of the @IntlSpyMuseum. Other vets, too.
Given the content, I'd speculate that these folks might be very surprised to see their names used for this.

2/ The investigation walks through the footage (props to @WSJ, there's so much!) starting with Proud Boys staging under the direction of leaders including (now-arrested) Joe Biggs outside the #Capitol
3/ In the staging area, a Proud Boy identified as Dan Scott aka 'Milkshake' yells "lets take the f***ng capitol"
-Milkshake is admonished by another PB.
-Someone makes fun of 'Milkshake' for the indiscretion(?). Some laughter.
-"Don't yell it, do it" says another, quietly.
2/ Every gov is interested in what vulnerability researchers are doing... but the DPRK may be in a perverse sweet spot:
- Limited homegrown development
-Can't purchase an exploit from Zerodium or similar sellers b/c of sanctions
- Not super worried about getting caught
3/ @Google TAG: great! More posts please! The cybersecurity community benefits from your special visibility into threat actor behavior. Some of your past posts surfaced attribution, indicators & clustering that were properly hard for external researchers to nail down.
Per @FBI: dozen guns, 100s of rounds, showing up in Senate w/Taser and zip ties, etc etc. Bringing weapons to DC.. Pictures of him brandishing weapons ...
None of this led Judge Frensley to conclude #ZipTieGuy might be an ongoing danger.
The mass of information surfaced from the #Capitol is a public education in how far we are from the "bad guys are going dark" narrative that is usually hung on national security events.
Not that this will save us from going through another round of the encryption debate...
I bring you the inestimable @KimZetter, always thinking a few plays ahead. Which is why you should buy her recent book: COUNTDOWN TO ZERO DAY bookshop.org/books/countdow…
...but I keep thinking of "When Prophecy Fails," a classic social psychology study of how a faithful few grew MORE committed to a cult after a predicted cataclysm did not happen. 1/
2/ Long time since I read the book in Social Psych. class & I do recall the book & its methods were the topic of some controversy...
..But as @juliacarriew points out: experts are candid about the many unknowns about Q, including how to address it.
3/ So, please help me with recommendations of good scholarship & scholars to follow on where the literature went after "When Prophecy Fails." I think I need a crash course.
