1/ I try to be thorough and methodical, so here are some great comments from last week that I intended to comment on, or at least catalog, but didn't because (1) the thread was getting too long & (2) I ran out of time
Last year, this parsha was the Bat Mitzvah for my niece. My family spent Shabbat in White Plains and the whole experience was special and also super-strange (it was in a Conservative temple so I had to juggle going to early minyan etc)
3/ For the past year of pandemic, whenever my mind travels back to "what was normal" I go to that Shabbat. It was with my in-laws, it was a new community, the temple rabbis and I are friends so that made it even more fun/memorable. templeisraelcenter.org
28.02/ One of my largest lists "News2016," started early in the #TrumpCrisis, has this tagline: "Started for the 2016 election, persists until Trump (ym'sh) is gone"
I don't want to delete the valuable list but I'll change the name/tag to honor my promise twitter.com/i/lists/757955…
28.03/ My 14yo son's idea for fixing the "worst rule in sports" aka the #NFL#FumbleTouchbackRule: it's a touchback but retained by the offense. So the ball is placed on the opponent 20, but the down is retained.
My archives for Parshat Bo include notes for a sermon I gave in 2005 which was, in my words, "Erev Yom Ha-Melekh" (on the eve of King's Day)
Title: "Civil rights in Jewish thought and in Halakha"
2/ (I had only the outline for the sermon, sorry)
A.Halakhic underpinnings
1.Kavod ha-briyot [honoring humanity]
2.Ahavat ha-briyot [love of humanity]
3.Darkhei Shalom [ways of peace]
4.Kiddush Hashem = Tikkun Olam [ideological mission to be a "light unto the Nations"
3/ [I must have given an overview of these topics - a yearlong course, each, but in 3 min]
B.We help those who are oppressed because of our history of oppression
[This is the connection to the parsha. The Exodus carries a message that we can't perpetuate domination or cruelty]
27.02/ I was just teaching my children about the wonders of my childhood toys, including the one time I got for my birthday a Lite Brite and the amazing Shrinky-dinks.
27.03/ Played "Lawyers, Guns & Money" for my 11yo daughter who thought it was hilarious & suggested we change rock, paper, scissors to those 3
rock = guns (weapon) 🔫
paper = money 💵
scissors = upside-down for 2 feet (lawyer is a type of person, no?) 🤦🏽
1/ Many people remark that we wouldn't have survived 4 more years of Trump (ym'sh) - and I agree - but this was a 40 year project of destroying the democratic form of US gov., starting with Reagan, and accelerated from Gingrich.
DJT was to almost the final hammer blow.
2/ Both Roosevelts changed the function of the government from preserving the entrenched power to an instrument to help people survive & thrive
TR was a Progressive, tore down the monopolies, established public health etc. When he left the party, the GOP became what it is today
3/ Wilson took up TR's platform (TR helped by splitting the 1912 vote) and when the GOP won in 1920, they actively tried to undermine the entire new project of what America would do for its citizens.
