Numbers are trending down.
But we must not let our guard down.
3Ws
Protecting public health has been top priority.
We took decisive & strong actions.
We've relied on science.
Now it's time to get kids back in classroom. #ncpol
Gov:
Our top priority has been getting kids back into the classroom.
Schools are where kids learn social skills. Get meals. Find their voices.
New research says in-person learning is safe - with protocols.
I urge all districts to provide in-person option. #ncpol
Gov:
Districts should still have option for remote - taught by teachers who are also at-risk.
Everyone has worked hard: Teachers, students & parents.
Sec. of Health Mandy Cohen:
- NC has administered 1M vax
- Expanded our call center to answer Qs about vax --- 888-675-4567
- New way to check online for vax availability
- Livestream tonight with Rev. William Barber
Cohen:
New research confirms earlier findings about low risks for kids in schools.
Children rarely transmit COVID to other kids or adults.
It comes down to strong safety protocols in schools.
Supt. of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt:
Hard truth: Even with immediate action, we still face a difficult path. Kids were falling behind BEFORE the pandemic.
Health risks much lower than originally feared.
Truitt:
Most teachers want to return. But they are held back by district policies they have little control over.
We hope this new guidance empowers students & teachers to return to classroom. Students cannot lose any more time.
NC Board of Ed Chairman, Eric Davis:
Despite heroic efforts of teachers, parents, and administrators -- kids are suffering.
Not enough of our students are receiving the benefit of in-person instruction.
Science is clear: It is safe to re-open schools with protocols.
WCNC reporter Q:
NC is still worst in USA in getting unemployment benefits to people. Why does it take a call from journalist or lawmaker to get people their money from DES?
Gov:
It shouldn't. We've given out millions. We need #NCGA to increase UI benefits.
Follow-up reporter Q:
If outbreaks get worse, would this decision signal a change in priority going forward?
Gov:
We'll do whatever it takes to protect health & safety. We'll follow science & data & advice from experts.
Schools should be last to close & first to open. #NCpol
Winston-Salem Journal reporter Q:
Recommending every grade every day in-person?
Cohen:
Baseline of screening & PPE protocols. Encourage districts to work with us to operationalize this.
Follow-up reporter Q:
Effect on extra-curricular activity?
Cohen:
We have guidance on activities. Recommend against indoor contact sports (like basketball). Higher transmission in HS sports. Singing, shouting also increases rate of transmission.
Wherein @WRAL calls @markrobinsonNC (a Black man) and Olivia Oxendine (Native American) KKK members for objecting to Critical Race Theory being embedded into NC Social Studies & History standards.
@WRAL@markrobinsonNC One of the other Board Members (Amy White) that @WRAL attacked as a KKK member is the Executive Director of Community of Hope Ministries... which was awarded the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream in Action Award in 2017.
Cooper starts with case counts, hospitalizations, death toll.
Numbers have stabilized. Good.
But numbers are too high.
Virus is still spreading. A new contagious variant in NC.
Can't let guard down.
Do the 3 Ws.
Cooper:
Top priority is getting vax to people as quickly & equitably as possible.
We've administered 99.8% of first doses rec'd from fed gov't.
Sticking point is lack of supply.
We have 1,000s of shots. But we have MILLIONS of people who need them.
Sec. Cohen starts with case counts, hospitalizations, and death toll.
Praises frontline health care workers.
"They've borne a weight that would break many."
As of midnight, 95% of all 1st doses have been administered.
Gov:
Unfortunately, This virus did not disappear at midnight on New Year's Eve.
96 counties are now labeled as critical or significant spread.
We must treat it as the deadly threat is.
New deadly strain found in USA.
Double down on 3Ws.
Extending #SHEO for 3 weeks.
Gov:
I will keep all the restrictions in place. Health Sec. Mandy Cohen will issue a "Secretarial directive" about how everyone should not leave their homes.
Getting vax out quickly is top priority. We'll do everything to do so.
Cohen is doing a great job at this.
Gov:
Lots of spread. Don't get numb to these numbers - that have plateaued over the last few weeks. But they are still too high.
Thanks for local gov't & LEO enforcing my orders.
Also, thoughts & prayers to cops shot in line of duty.
Gov. Cooper runs down case counts, hospitalizations and deaths.
There is real hope we can stop loss of life. First vaccines arrived. I talked with UPS driver who made that delivery - first in country.
We spent months prepping for this moment.
Gov:
We expect more doses next week after next round of approval.
Still need clarity from feds on how many doses we'll get.
Feds tell us weekly how many doses we get & we need more time to plan. VP Pence said they'd work on it.
