☝️U.S. snow lull appears to be over!❄️

In the U.S., states have started taking unused doses from nursing homes and pulling them back into their state distribution systems -- this should tighten up some of the slack in the system. Per @angelicalavito

In our global rate chart, China makes infrequent reports. Those reports are very big. So it ends up looking...weird. This will likely clean up over time, but the data are the data.

Our calculator looks at every state and country (as long as there's enough data) and analyzes how long it will take to get to 75% vaccination.

Israel will get there in 2 months. The U.S. will take 11.

A big caveat, here -- this is gonna be volatile early on. We use a 7-day rolling average. When vaccination numbers are volatile, the countdown will be, too.

Other big news tonight -- J&J is applying for an emergency use authorization for its vaccine. This will meaningfully change the supply picture in the U.S. and elsewhere, if it's cleared for use:

But before anyone gets too excited, it's gonna be at least until the end of February before it's out there:

⚠️We did NOT get updates in time today from Maryland + New Jersey, which may have caused a slightly lower total than usual. CDC did report totals, which may compensate.

U.S. leaders:

🇺🇸1.8M doses today; 7-day avg=1.36M/day
🏅Biggest U.S. day of reported vaccinations yet, by our count

📊US: 38.5M doses total
🧑‍🤝‍🧑28.9M w/ 1+ doses, 8.09M completed vaccination

As expected, the number of people completing vaccination is starting to pick up quickly. It should trail the first-dose rate by about 3.5 weeks (assuming supply remains steady)

📊We have a VERY cool new feature letting you see how long your state/country will take to reach 75% coverage with a vaccine. Check it out below!

For example, here's the situation in Canada -- which was an early leader in acquiring doses:

You can look by state. Here's NY, where at current rates it'll take 17 months to cover 75% of the population:

Over the last two days, the U.S. suffered a major drop-off in daily vaccinations reported.

❄️❄️As it turns out, yes, you can blame the snow. ❄️❄️

Here's how the chart of daily vaccinations counted looks in the reporting period for the storm (data avail on our tracker bloomberg.com/graphics/covid…) Image
As @jillrshah reports, many East Coast states basically canceled vaccinations over the last two days as the weather hit. NJ, CT, NY all had vaccination cancelations.

Ditto Maryland, which canceled many appointments. Look at their daily rate chart: Image

🚨The U.S. hit a milestone tonight: More people have been vaccinated with at least one dose than have tested positive for Covid

🇺🇸32.8M doses admin
➕1M doses today; 7-day avg=1.34M/day
🏅6.08M completed vaccination

Our full story on the milestone here is below, from @FayCortez + @emmarcourt.

Globally, more than 100M doses have been administered as well.

The lower-than-usual 1M doses today is of an unknown cause. It's not the ❄️☃️🌨️, since we know doses reported typically lag the on-the-ground situation by a few days. Image
