In a way I am glad with what is happening today. It is making me question everything. From my Convent school harassing me for being the only student with a pierced nose & my parents having to defend & explain that it’s an essential part of Dogra culture.
Students being fined for speaking regional languages & not English, in the school playground, starkly different to multilingualism being celebrated in schools abroad. Those educated in vernacular medium disadvantaged & labelled Graain/Pendu/Ghaati/Bhaiya/illiterate etc.
Religious study a subject taught in primary & secondary schools in UK as opposed to convoluted ideas of secularism which shame practicing Hindus and reduce & ridicule Dharmic traditions.
To Indian women being modern, cool and ‘youngish’ only when stripped off all cultural symbols of bindi, mangalsutra, sindoor etc. If used, to be used only cosmetically. Women wearing all this demeaningly labelled as Behenjis, Auntyjis & Kakubais.
I never saw any mention of Dogra Kings & warriors who expanded the boundaries of India & spearheaded the military renaissance in 19th century in my history books. Also didn’t see much on Ahom Kings, Cholas or Vijayanagar Empire etc. Indian history, identity & pride erased.
When Yoga & Chai & the general idea of India are to be attacked by a global Attack India Toolkit, the prob is with the oldest civilisation & all its cultural symbols. Its existence & its continuity. The resurgence & reawakening is the prob. Even more imp now, to own & defend it.

Raghunath Mandir, Suchetgarh, is on zero point at the International Border in Jammu. The Mandir was built by Dogra Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1837. The Dogra Jamwal dynasty are Suryavanshi Rajput who trace their lineage to Ikshvaku dynasty & Vishnu Avatar Shri Ram is their Kuldevta.
Beautiful wall paintings adorn the garbh griha of the Raghunath Mandir at Suchetgarh, Jammu.
Mandir’s garbh griha also bears the marks of two mortars fired by Pakistan that landed on the Temple in the Indo-Pak war of 1971.
A beautiful painting done by Jammu artist KK Gandhi depicting Krimchi Temples of Udhampur, #Jammu. Locally known as the Pandava Temples because of a belief that the Pandavas worshipped here during their agyat vaas. The Temples consist of 5 temples & 2 shrines. #TemplesofJammu
The Temples have a garbhagriha with curvilinear shikara & an elongated antarala with a sukanasika decorated with kutasikara & kalasa motif. Some temples have a pillared mandapa infront of antarala, which appears to have been added at a later date.
The temples are believed to be built on tiratha or pancharatha plan externally & square internally. Inner walls of antarala have trefoil niches & pattern of inverted lotus flower on the ceiling under double tiered triangular roof.
On #WorldHeritageDay I showcase the soul of #Dogra people & the epicentre of their modern history. The images will also reveal how if you want to squash a voice, you erase their history & self-esteem. This site has been a victim of loot, pillage & arson. #MubarakMandi#Jammu
The #MubarakMandi Palace complex holds 300 yrs of Dogra history within itself. With over 20 palaces built over 200 years starting at 1710 it is unlike any other. From here the Dogra rulers reigned over their sprawling kingdom.
For over 200 years, they ruled over an area that stretched from the Pir Panjal mountain range in the north, the plains of Punjab to the South to Ladakh & Tibet in the east.
Picking up some lines from the book ‘Memory Lane to Jammu’ which describe #Jammu city - “Spread out like Rome, on seven low hillocks of the great Shivalik Range it extended from north to south in an undulating natural spread.” #AmazingJammu
“During the summer nights, a cool breeze rose from the East around 10pm which we called dhidoo” - Rehmat Ullah Rad. #AmazingJammu
“Summer mornings & evenings were always very beautiful in Jammu. People would gather in small grps at the canal, dip the mangoes they had brought in its ice cold waters. Glow worms would appear in droves & twinkle in the dark like stars”. #AmazingJammu
We hear of KP exodus from Kashmir. Not so much of the exodus from #JammuHills for similar reasons - Jihadi Terrorism which grips #JammuAndKashmir
Today I tell you abt a KP family who left the Valley during the tribal raids in 1947 & settled in #Jammu#Bhaderwah. The Koul family.
The matriarch Smt Sukhmali Koul, made #Bhaderwah#Jammu her home & went onto become the first Lady teacher in the area, also setting up a school for girls. Giving back to her community, in the best way she could.
A few generations down, the fly remains committed to their region & nation. Ruchir Kumar Koul marries a beautiful Bhaderwahi girl in 1989. 5 yrs into the marriage, Rucher was gunned down by terrorists. He left behind two small children, 3 & 5 yrs old & a 26 yr old wife.
Hand on my heart I have been thinking of Dulat the last few weeks. Not just because of the brilliant tweet by @rahulpandita asking us to think abt Faesal & his trip to Delhi & back, but also because I have been wondering who has been pushing these separatists as opposed to Jammu.
How are two bit KMs from the valley on TV Panels & no one from Jammu ever is.
How do only Kashmiri scholars/journalists reach the research & policy orgs, are groomed & become blue eyed boys/girls & Jammu remains unrepresented.
Why are seminar circuits dominated by KMs?
How do regional & anti Jammu papers continue to run despite being boycotted in Jammu?
Why is a Shehla who most don’t know in JK getting so much attention.
Why js a joker like Faesal who asked for a Nobel Peace Prize for Imran Khan hailed as an answer to a prayer.
