for YEARS i've been yelling at anyone who calls SPEED RACER (2008) "actually" "good." no "actually" necessary! it's Just A Masterpiece. love it or go home!
well, @mikeyface went and made a perfectly justified link between SPEED RACER, picasso, and james joyce in this video :-O
a not-insignificant percentage of the worst conversations i have ever suffered in my life have involved a different guy scrounging through thin air for Cool Points by boldly declaring that "pretending to like" SPEED RACER is "just a fad". nope!! it owns, scientifically
maybe i should elaborate: as mikey points out in the video, speed racer came out a week after iron man. mainstream critics had been programmed, by films like batman begins, to accept iron man as a "serious comic book film" which also happened to have Something For Everyone
the way i see it, comic book movies were aiming for naturalism, and iron man impressed audiences and critics by presenting a distinctly different, cheekier brand of batman begins' "gritty reboot" solution. this just so happened to spawn a dynasty of billion-dollar-makers
speed racer, at that exact moment in time, came across as an immediate regression: comic book (in this case, cartoon) films--on the surface of the surface, at least--devolving back "away" from the film medium, back to cartoons. critics found it easy to lambaste it and move on
only True Weirdo Movieheads were able to take it all in at that exact time (me and my soul-buddy mccune among them, if i may aggrandize myself a bit!)
yet the marvel cinematic universe wasn't the ONLY evil born out of that dark year: we also had . . . twitter
people in my acquaintancesphere saw twitter in 2008-2009 as a sleeker, sharper alternative to facebook. here you could share your opinions fast and loud, chasing quick virality as reward for the harshest owns. soon the thrill of sharing eclipsed the thrill of having an opinion
i do not recall any exactly "viral" tweet-owns of SPEED RACER, though i do recall critical consensus being casually volleyed around until the film achieved the colloquial stench of a horrible disaster more quickly than playground discussions of my youth had ever killed a thing
so it was the film earned its "Actually" Moment: most of its haters simply hadn't seen it! humans have osmosed the opinions of others since the dawn of language, and passed them off as their own without firsthand experience. it's how our brains work. twitter (et al) exploits that
you've no doubt seen a blog post or two explaining why mediocre films tend to win best picture: because they use runoff voting. voters choose a #1 with their gut, and peoples' guts differ. their safe #2 and #3 wind up winning. this is why marvel makes billions, etc
anyway i'm opening up too many topic boxes, so i will have to cut this off soon. let me just say: speed racer didn't have a "re-evaluation" in the mid-2010s. it had its "evaluation." no "re" needed. people were watching it for the first time! thus the gravity of the "Actually"
around 2017, i recall seeing two twitter users awakening to SPEED RACER per week. soon, liking SPEED RACER became "Sort Of Normal." this is when i started to overhear said would-be Cool Kids try to debunk the film's excellence proximal to the figurative office water cooler
part of me thinks "speed racer probably doesn't need a guy like me to get people to watch it anymore", and then i see videos like this and realize, oh, there's way, way more stuff to say about this movie than even *i* have ever said about it. and that's sayin somethin!!
i was tempted to make a video about SPEED RACER back when that CATS movie came out, because i saw *so* many people on twitter hate-watching it. they were Live-Tweeting, from the theater!! those monsters!! and i wanted to say, "this reminds me of what happened to SPEED RACER"
then i actually watched that CATS movie, and, lol, well, my mom gave me some cliche advice once about when to say anything at all
the notion i grappled with then is this: in the 11 years between SPEED RACER and CATS, however, social-media-users had started to communally WATCH the stuff upon which they intended to dunk. is that progress? i think "sort of yes, though mostly no . . . ?"
does all this rumination have ramifications outside mere Talking About Movies? absolutely. does it involve politics, etc? sure. do i have a LOT more to say about this? of course. will i say SOME of it in the near future? maybe!! can i ever articulate it all perfectly? lmao no
SPEED RACER's status as an alternative use of hollywood mega-monster-budget is interesting, though only in a footnote capacity. when it comes right down to it, the film Just Plain Owns. whether it's still cool or too obvious to like it exactly right now doesn't matter: it owns.
in conclusion, if you haven't seen SPEED RACER (2008), you should watch it. if you HAVE seen it, why not watch it again? and in either case, watch the wonderful video i linked above.
also, watch his video about THE MATRIX as a companion piece
postscript: social media also murdered INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL, though to a much smaller extent than it did SPEED RACER
maybe i'll talk more about that some other time! bye

well, the new york deadline is sunday so i am finally applying for health insurance today. (i wouldn't be able to use the insurance until february 1st anyway, so i put it off.) i played through demon's souls FOUR TIMES in the past month and i still don't understand this system
the psychopaths in charge talk about how valuable "choice" is, though literally all of the plans offered to me have a three out of five star rating. except the "new" plans, which i guess will be three stars next year. also notice a column for an attribute which is ALWAYS "no" lol
this baroque, bizarre, unreadable-on-a-mobile-phone website logs me out automatically seemingly every three minutes, always without warning, usually while i'm entering data. click "next," get an error. it took me two months of such trials to get all my info plugged in for today.
hey @Chase . . . if the wait time to talk to the Fraud Department about my account that you all just locked is Greater Than One Hour, maybe don't play such huge loud xylophone and ukulele hold music. just play like an ocean sound--something i can listen to while working . . . :-(
the song changes after every time your robot butts in to say "please stay on the line" . . . you won't even let me get comfortable with one song . . . while i'm here can i just say that i'm going to buy a TV in one month, so if you see that, yes, that was me--no need to lock
also i'll be doing my taxes in about four months and would appreciate it if you implement a feature that lets me search my account activity for specific transactions. wells fargo has had this feature since like 1996 . . . it'd be really helpful . . .
i am Very Intrigued by Final Fantasy XVI. it's got the game design director of dragon's dogma! it looks like it might have a Lone Protagonist! its story appears to span many years! it's got some witcher-y medieval stylisms, and baroque-ish FFVI nostalgia-baiting. how neat!
several people have asked me, so, OK: yeah, i'll stream myself "reacting" to the playstation 5 event later today. whenever that is, just check out twitch dot tv slash actionbutton !!!
@necrosofty you're invited btw in case you didn't see my text . . . !
i'll try to go live maybe 30 minutes before the event for a "predictions" section. uhh. i got some guys coming to reglaze my bathtub (literally) in a couple minutes, so i hope they're done before that, else i reveal my Full IdiotBaby Self around a buncha professional man's men
in all seriousness, i only want one thing from the playstation 5 event: i want ridge racer. where is ridge racer? we have gone a whole 1.9 console generations without a ridge racer. namco: forza horizon is eating your lunch. give the people a launch-day Ridge Racer.
here it is--The Final Cut of ACTION BUTTON REVIEWS DOOM! this is the biggest video i've ever made--and that was WITH help of @RyMiTay and non-twitter-user Josh "JW" Watson. thanks also to @Hbomberguy for proving three-hour reviews Are Good (and the cameo)
there was an audio mistake with the YouTube Premiered version--we were fixing it while the premiere was live. i'll private that version soon! if you left a comment on that upload, feel free to leave it again on this one :-D
there are a couple loose frames; the music is a little bit loud in a part. i've heard your concerns. these videos will get better every time we make one. we already shot the next review. i already wrote the next-NEXT review. i already *researched* the next-NEXT-next review, etc
the DOOM review processed on youtube quite quickly (less than one hour!) so perhaps Our New Editor knows his codecs better than i do. at any rate, we got a copyright claim for one of the "royalty free" beethoven tracks i used. i'm gonna try to fix it and reupload
if i don't do this, unfortunately, some weirdos are going to light the video up like an advertisement christmas tree, which means i have to occasionally see politicians in my video player when i go to look at comments, which is one flavor away from a horror neapolitan
update: final export is processing. gonna record a podcast and come back. if 1080p60 is ready, we'll premiere at 7pm eastern!
