Breaking News: The military has declared an amnesty of over 23,000 prisoners either serving prison sentences or in custody facing trial. High-profile nationalists Wirathu and former USDP MP Hla Swe are expected to be among those released. #2021uprising
The amnesty will not only see the release of those charged with sedition under the ousted NLD government, but is also expected to be used to create space in prison for those involved in the ongoing movement against the military coup.
After nearly a year and a half on the lam, ultranationalist Buddhist monk Wirathu surrendered to the police a week before last year's elections to face charges of sedition. He is highly expected to be among the prisoners released today.
Hla Swe, a firebrand who first evaded arrest for sedition after saying the government should be bombed, turned himself in last December, proclaiming in an interview that 2021 would be the 'year of the nationalists'.

Myanmar's new military regime has ordered a “temporary” ban on Facebook following widespread public criticism of Monday's coup on the popular platform.
The order from the Transport and Telecommunications Ministry instructs all mobile operators, international gateway service providers and Internet service providers to block Facebook from February 3 until midnight on February 7.
The reason given for the order is the threat to public order posed by individuals spreading rumours and making “disturbances”.
