If we were living 400 years ago, in the year 1621, it would be obvious to virtually all of us that the world was stationary at the centre of the universe, & that those who argued for the Copernican, heliocentric, world view were nutters.
Not just because religious/academic authority supported this view but because of common sense: you only had to observe the heavens for confirmation. If the Earth moved, we would surely notice it. And to suggest it was a wandering star, like Venus or Mars, was blatantly absurd.
Now, 400 years later, with academic & even religious authority teaching us that the heliocentric view was correct after all, we all believe it, despite continuing to contradict common sense.
Today, it is common sense & taught by mainstream academia that the purpose of state & government is to serve society at large.
This is, however, as misconceived as geocentric, Ptolemaic, astronomy was.

Most academics stuck with the geocentric world view, not just because of common sense, but also because their patron or employer demanded it of them.
It's no different today with the assumption that the primary purpose of state & government is to serve society at large.

The truth is that the primary purpose of state & government is to facilitate society's self-exploitation, to the personal advantage of its elites & favoured (esp. wealthy & academic/formerly priestly) clients, at the expense of society at large & its long-term survival.
We don't expect capital to prioritise the interests of society at large, or its long-term survival, but we do expect state & government to. Only, they don't. And it is not in their nature to do so.

Once this is recognised & understood, we can begin with the radical reforms (not just of institutions, but also of our own values & aspirations) that are necessary, if civilisation is to survive this present century.
Think about it: we assume that the British PM, whoever it is, is serving their country, but in truth, the country is serving them.

Immigrants & refugees from the 3rd world did pretty well, too, acquiring British citizenship, but Native Britons - these Prime Ministers' own people, paid a heavy price. Soon they will be a racial minority in their ancestral homeland, while being required to celebrate DIVERSITY.
Then there's the existential question of sustainability on our finite, vulnerable & overpopulated planet, #SpaceshipEarth, which all these Prime Minsters failed to address.

Being expected to celebrate DIVERSITY, while being racially replaced, through immigration & #RacialMixing (which is what DIVERSITY actually means), is more than just a little Orwellian. It's full-blown 1984, just not quite as Orwell described it.
