I have to admit, I tend to agree with Joe Clark. But not his rationale.
I am getting frustrated with the Liberal govt.
Not because of the nonsense offered by opposition parties as scandals, but bc of the negligence in general over health & economics. cbc.ca/news/canada/ca…
I know the Liberals have done a great job protecting the public’s health and ensuring most people have the funds to get through the pandemic. I have a few complaints though.
As an Albertan, we’ve been hung out to dry, again.
It’s no secret that Kenney is ignoring Covid safety measurements and creating a dangerous situation by swinging back and forth to open and close the economy for the maximum spread of covid.
Ottawa must know the reason. Because UCP has absolute power during the pandemic.
Several other premiers are performing similarly. A population in lockdown is a tamed public. It’s not like we can protest or have demonstrations. The majority of us are NOT anti-science.
The premiers know that. They know the majority will comply with covid restrictions.
While we are all stuck at home, premiers are making significant changes that are going unnoticed by the public.
Which is missed because the majority is still trying to figure out why premiers are easing restrictions with new variants spreading wildly.
There are multiple attacks on social safety nets. Healthcare, Education, environmental protections, and a race to see who can deregulate the fastest.
The Alberta economy is cratering. Bankruptcies are up and major corporations are having a hay day purchasing cheap assets.
Billions sit unspent or were distributed to those least in need of benefits to intentionally aggravate and needle the federal government.
Plain as day there is a power struggle between Trudeau and Kenney. And in the meantime, it’s Albertans who suffer.
Our indigenous communities have the highest covid infections. Our schools have zero modifications to make them safer. Our taxes and public pensions are being handed to investors like candy at Halloween. Making Kenney popular with big wigs in the moment, but no profits returned.
Kenney has set up a fiefdom, a kingdom of sorts, where he and he alone directs the direction of the wind and holds the power of life and death. While other premiers are pushing their limits, Kenney has traversed the line not to be crossed somewhere about April 2020.
He’s essentially a mini dictator in a federal democracy.
And while Ottawa occasionally makes chastising political commentary, he’s been given free reign to abuse the vulnerable (which in a pandemic is everyone)& keep covid circulating widely in perpetuity to maintain control.
That’s the source of my frustration. I happen to be one of those Albertans that isn’t happy about being left to my own defences to address the severe overreach of UCP.
With the pandemic, UCP has the ability to forego legislative oversight and typical checks and balances.
Many have noticed quite a few decisions have been made without community consultation. Well, that’s because UCP gave themselves that power in April 2020. And the federal government hasn’t said a peep.
UCP is operating outside the framework of democratic governance.
As an informed constituent, I’m aware the feds can’t storm in and restore regular governance. But to ignore the absence of freedom and the consent of the governed is wearing thin after almost a year.
People are suffering, dying, being ignored and abused by our provincial govt.
PMJT has the reputation of his father to contend with. A magnificent and inspiring human being, Pierre Trudeau was a charismatic man and a powerful leader. Justin Trudeau must forge his own path and be his own man. Which limits his repertoire of available choice of actions.
Ever so cautious to avoid declaring an National Emergency, PMJT is hesitant to be compared to his father. The only PM in Canadian history who invoked the War Measures Act when Canada was not at war.
Much criticized by his contemporaneous peers, P. Trudeau made a bold decision.
He chose to protect the people of Canada rather than continue to allow rampant violence and insurrection to continue unabated.
That took courage and fortitude to ignore the criticisms of opposition and put the needs of Quebeckers and MPs ahead of his personal reputation.
It was a different time in Canadian history. When politicians still held respect of the people who voted for them and many who didn’t. When politicians did the right thing rather than what would make the electorate vote for them. Courage and integrity were part of politics, once.
No longer. Now populism reigns supreme. Promises politicians never intend to keep are offered regularly as virtue signals and value statements. Political rhetoric has become a competition about who can fool the most people into offering their support.
Then once in power, the electorate is forgotten. The promises shelved. And hidden agendas emerge.
Politics wasn’t always this devious and deceptive. There was honour in serving your country.
I don’t think that’s what PMJT stands for. I think he is principled like his father.
But he has a cacophony of opposition critics waiting for one slip up. One tiny misstep, one forgotten detail. So they can then turn it into scandal and smear the man and the party. Backed up by domestic and foreign bots and trolls who inundate the public with lies & accusations.
Anyone would be hesitant to act boldly under those conditions.
What PMJT needs is better comms people. People who will set the stage for criticism of Kenney’s undemocratic proto dictatorship. And expose his agenda. Not a war room. But a counter propaganda comms unit.
Build awareness of the unconstitutional actions of premiers who are challenging the constitution’s rights and freedoms provisions and to point out the obstructionism practiced by opposition leaders and their parties.
The current comms team is incapable of this task.
Get new people added. Trump was just acquitted a second time by the senate for impeachment. He will escalate violence and create havoc. The Liberty Coalition is evidence of that reality.
Threatening the life of a medical expert who’s trying to save people’s lives?
It’s about to get really ugly. And we need a courageous and bold leader to take charge. We need PMJT.
@JustinTrudeau stop worrying about being compared to your father. Standing up for what’s right & making hard choices was your father’s legacy. I hope you make it yours as well.
Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and BC all require a common goal. Zero covid. Get us close to zero and a majority election win is the reward waiting for you.
The public can take it from there. Then we will rid ourselves of toxic governance. In perpetuity.

This is ridiculous that the RCMP are refusing to shut down this facility and continue to allow severely disinformed church goers to continue to put people in the Edmonton region in danger.
This must be stopped and the RCMP must be investigated to discern if there is any favouritism and leniency being provided in light of the Church’s board member and elder being a former RCMP officer.
It is intolerable for the vast majority of citizens to continue to be held in lockdown because some people refuse to follow the covid orders and flout the law.
Obviously, local law enforcement and political leaders are not enforcing covid measures.
This article doesn’t analyze why the province wants to move to a provincial police force. While it reviews costs, it doesn’t delve into the “benefits” from the perspective of UCP. Why might UCP want it’s own police force?
To understand the decision making premise of UCP, first you need to understand their ideology.
Paleolibertarianism is the prevailing ideological base from which UCP operates.
While they call themselves conservative, paleolibertarians are not. They’re in a league of their own.
Roughly fashioned after Reconstruction Era 19th century Gilded Age Robber Barons and Redeemers, paleolibertarians represent “Old Conservatism,” institutional authoritarian governance through social pressure, and unregulated property rights and deregulated free market economies.
This is what the anti-trust laws of the early 20th century were meant to prevent.
The result was to divide Standard Oil (John A. Rockefeller’s oil monopoly) into several smaller companies. That solution didn’t really fix the problem though.
Years later, US anti-trust laws are being lobbied heavily to be repealed and to allow unregulated monopolies.
Radicalized Evangelical Christians are putting the rest of the community in danger by refusing to abide by covid measures. Contempt for others’ health while spreading a deadly disease is not a religious right.
Just like Hawaii vacations. Apparently some people have more rights than others?
Maybe if the government pulls their licence to operate until covid is over or their parishioners are vaccinated?
I’m sure getting tired of covid doubters making life difficult for the rest of us & receiving polite letters and minimal fines for putting the public’s life at risk!
This is another one of those harsh realities mainstream Canadians prefer to rationalize away. You personally aren’t racist. You personally haven’t experienced racial hatred. So it’s difficult to empathize with those who have.
You are one grain of sand on the beach.
You’re open to new experiences and cultures. You may even have friends and relatives that are BIPOC. But you’re ignoring the dangerous and cutting shards of glass BIPOC must wade through to traverse the beach.
This is the action MLK jr. referred to as infuriating.
