We are now hearing a recording from incarcerated torture survivor, Stanley Howard, who was tortured by Jon Burge and has been incarcerated for over 37years.
Stanley was a part of the Death Row Ten and was exonerated but yet remains behind bars.
Gregory Banks, torture survivor, incarcerated from 1983 to 1990. The first to get his case overturned which opened the flood gates for hundreds (thousands) of other survivors to come forward.
Ronald Kitchen, torture survivor, incarcerated for 21 years, 13 on death row. We will hear from him later in the program but go and purchase his book, "My Midnight Years.
Anthony Holmes was tortured in 1973 by Jon Burge for over 24 hours. He was electrocuted, cattle prods were placed on his body. His heart has so much dead tissue that a cardiologist asked him how many heart attacks he had. He has had none.
Anthony was released in 2004. He was able to give testimony in many other incarcerated torture survivor cases, including testifying at the United Nations.
We still have torture survivors incarcerated that need to be freed. Torture continues to this day.
Gregory Banks was suffocated with a plastic bag by CPD in Area 2 Police Station. He was forced to confess through torture. One of the cops told him "This is what they have for niggers."
Greg continues to provide testimony to assist other torture survivors who remain incarcerated and who are continuing to fight to have their convictions overturned. and fighting to be freed.
The Deathrow Ten were torture survivors and their exoneration and hundreds of others, led to the gov issuing a moratorium on the death penalty which led to complete abolition.
Ronnie Kitchen is now talking about when the Deathrow Ten were inside (some have been released) first tried to reach out to all the so-called Black leaders and none of them joined the fight.
The fight was largely, and continues to be, led by moms & loved ones.
The mothers are now being centered in the presentation including Armanda Shackleford, mother of Gerald Reed, and mom Mary L. Johnson, mother of Michael Johnson. Both sons remain incarcerated now.
Mary L. Johnson says that she started out in the struggle when King was marching. She says she had internalized the system and thought she was free. But when her sons grew up, she began to see differently when CPD began harassment.
Mama Mary L. Johnson shares with us that she has had three breakdowns since her son was tortured and incarcerated. She has been fighting for decades. She tries to encourage other people to join the fight.
Ms. Mary L. Johnson shared that she saw a need for her to keep fighting and showing up every month to fight to free not just her son, but all incarcerated.
Mother of Gerald Reed, Armanda Shackleford, is now speaking.
Gerald has been incarcerated for 30 years. One year ago yesterday, Judge Hennelly reversed the former Judge's decision to throw out Gerald's conviction. Hennelly did this illegally.
We are now closing. There are so many people still incarcerated. We need u to fight. Join and support @chitorture@invinst@ChicagoTorture@UChiHumanRights and all the torture survivors, mamas and loved ones that show up in this fight.
A lot is happening in Chicago. Mayor Lori Lightfoot Emanuel gave over 65% of CARES Act money to CPD. Today, the Office of Inspector General released their report on the uprisings where it is revealed how Lori is directly responsible for the brutality. igchicago.org/2021/02/18/rep…
Page 55 documents how during the May 30th protests, CPD refused a person their seizure medication, watched them collapse and threatened another detainee with violence if they moved, presumably to assist the person having a seizure. Footage then records a cop threatening rape.
When Lori demanded the bridges be raised, it forced CDOT to call off duty employees. This was a move they were surprised to receive since it is rarely done. The raising of bridges was considered during the NATO protests in 2010 and was ultimately rejected as ‘ineffective’.
We had intense dialogue about this during the uprising where these tensions were heightened. This is a very divisive issue and is used expertly by COINTELPRO to disrupt processes and orgs.
But this is also a real political tension where ideologies can be used to justify conflict in defense and in opposition to. We saw this appear acutely this summer.
This is an important point and also consistent with how fascism historically has arisen. It is always supported first by the ruling classes, despite classist stereotypes. That is because fascism rises out of the crisis of capitalism - it is a response and attempt at reconfiguring
U.S. empire is in crisis. We can see this crisis developing in acute consistency throughout the last 10+ years, from the global economic crash, to global insurrection against police killings, to the failure of US capitalism to forge a response to COVID, to resulting unemployment
Demands from the ground have been to address the visible fissures in US capitalism: universal healthcare, employment programs, defunding police, releasing incarcerated peoples, ending cages of children, ending wars about control of oil, ending pipelines through indigenous lands +
BREAKING: Alderman Anthony Beale and Alderman Lopez proposes an order to immediately cease all no knock warrants. #EndRaids
City Council is breaking for five minutes while the chairman researchers procedure.
Alderwoman @RossanaFor33 is questioning the legitimacy of asking the law department for process clarity since they are directly implicated in the cover up of the attack in #AnjanetteYoung .
At 11 City Council will hold an emergency hearing on search warrants.
@thewapb@BwopC@BlkRemembrance For the next hour, we will share info on Chicago police raids as well as dive into recent cases that illustrate the horror that is imposed on families that are overwhelmingly Black and brown.
Police raids are racilalized, & class based, attacking Black, brown poor communities.
CPD regularly raids the wrong homes, and fails to assess whether children reside in the homes or take precautions to avoid
traumatizing children. When entering homes, officers typically break down the door &
charge into the living space with guns drawn, scaring everyone present.
It may not come as a surprise, but one of the topics we get asked about most frequently is intracommunal violence. That's right, this week we're actually going to talk about "Black on Black crime." But don't worry, it's still #Fuck12Friday
Since the recent uprisings began, it seems like there are more people than ever before who want to talk about violence in Black communities when we bring up #defundthepolice. #Fuck12Friday
There are usually two types of people who ask us about violence within the Black community. The first are the people who use "black on black violence" to divert attention away from protesting police brutality. #Fuck12Friday
