#OTD in 1965, four people were arrested in a plot to blow up the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and the Washington Monument. Three were members of the Black Liberation Front and the other was a Quebecois separatist who supplied explosives. newspapers.com/image/32397432/

According to the NYPD cop who infiltrated the plot, one of the Black Liberation Front conspirators, Walter Augustus Bowe, referred to the Statue of Liberty as "that damned old bitch."

The plot was supposedly hatched after one of the BLF members, Robert Steele Collier, met with Che Guevara when he was in New York for Castro's UN speech.

Collier and Bowe were both members of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee, which had been made notorious a couple years earlier by a certain plucky young book depository employee. Bowe was even a member of FPCC's executive board.

The Fair Play for Cuba Committee was co-founded by Richard Gibson, a black journalist who was friends with the likes of Richard Wright and Amiri Baraka and organized trips to Cuba, who also happened to be a CIA agent. newsweek.com/richard-gibson…

According to attorney Malcolm X's family's attorney Ben Crump, "Wood's job was to infiltrate civil rights organizations and encourage leaders and members to commit felonious acts." Strongly suggests Wood played a heavy hand in the Statue of Liberty plot.

In Wood's confession letter, he confirms that the Statue of Liberty plot was "created by [his] supervisor/handler." More shockingly, Wood confirms that the plot was directly related to the conspiracy to kill Malcolm X!

NYPD surveillance indicated that BLF members Howe and Sayyed were key components of Malcolm X's security detail. The Statue of Liberty plot was concocted so as to get those two arrested, leaving Malcolm unprotected on 2/21/65 at the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm was killed.
