Here are the weekly coronavirus case and death data for Iowa, both statewide and by county, for the week of February 14-21, 2021.

For the week, Iowa reported:

100 more coronavirus deaths
286 new hospital admissions
3,475 new confirmed cases

Less bad, but still too high!
The 100 deaths reported this week (Feb. 14-21) in Iowa were lowest number of deaths reported for a Sunday-to-Sunday week since Oct. 25-Nov. 1 (82 deaths).

At 14.3 deaths per day, it's still 3rd leading cause of death behind heart disease (19.7 per day) & cancer (17.7 per day).
New hospital admissions for coronavirus in Iowa totaled 286 for second week in a row:

Feb. 15: 35
Feb. 16: 40
Feb. 17: 44
Feb. 18: 52
Feb. 19: 43
Feb. 20: 34
Feb. 21: 38

Still too many being hospitalized by coronavirus, but down from the 370 admissions from Jan. 31-Feb. 7.
Overall, the total hospitalized in Iowa for coronavirus dropped by 11 from 240 on Feb. 14 to the 229 patients reported today.

Those in intensive care units were up 1 from 57 to 58 and those on ventilators were down 2 from 29 to 27.

Let's drive these numbers down to 0!
For the week (Feb. 14-21), the number of coronavirus "outbreaks" in long-term care facilities in Iowa dropped from 35 to 21.

Iowa reported 8 more coronavirus deaths of long-term care residents, up from 2,131 to 2,139.

Again, let's drive these numbers down to 0!
For the week (Feb. 14-21), Iowa reported 3,475 new coronavirus cases, up from 329,098 to 332,573.

Even though Iowa changed the front page of its coronavirus website, the state's "accessibility page" continues to provide the "total confirmed cases" statewide and by county.
The 3,475 new coronavirus cases reported in Iowa this week (Feb. 14-21) are the lowest for a week by my notes since the derecho data gap (Aug. 10-20).

Iowa reported 3,251 new cases the week of August 2-9.

This is the time to actually stop the virus, not let it go again.
Since August 9, Iowa has reported 4,406 coronavirus deaths. I don't know exactly how many deaths could have been avoided if Iowa had maintained strong public health measures, but I know we could have saved lives.

Let's not make the mistake of relaxing on public health again.
Subtracting deaths (5,336) and "recoveries" (309,168) from total cases (332,573), there are now 18,069 active coronavirus cases in Iowa - 1 out of every 175 Iowans.

By my notes, that's the lowest since I began tracking active cases in mid-September.

Let's not let it go again.
The fatality-case ratio is now 1.6966% [5,336 deaths divided by 314,504 resolved cases (deaths + "recoveries")].

Applying that rate to the 3,475 new cases reported this week (Feb. 14-21) would result in 59 more deaths.

Let's hope that doesn't happen, and let's stop the spread!
The 3,475 new cases reported this week were confirmed on tests of 25,221 new people for a rate of 13.8%.

For total tests (which is what Iowa now shows on its front page of its website), Iowa reported 3,828 new positives on 112,928 new total tests for a rate of 3.4%.
Testing numbers - total tests and new people tested - were back up this week (Feb. 14-21).

The rate showing coronavirus was down.

That's the right direction, but again, 3,475 Iowans got coronavirus, expected to result in another 59 deaths.

Stay vigilant. Get it down to 0!
Now for the coronavirus case data for counties in Iowa for the week (Feb. 14-21):

Iowa reports 17 more coronavirus deaths and 1,869 new coronavirus cases.

The 17 deaths are the second highest reported on a Sunday, and the 307 deaths reported since last Sunday (Nov. 29-Dec. 6) are highest for a 7-day period yet.

Please speak up with Gov. Reynolds and legislators to do more to slow the spread of coronavirus and save lives.

Since the Republican majority adjourned the Iowa Legislature on June 14, over 2,000 Iowans have now died from this infectious disease (2,682 total now vs. 651 then).

Iowa Senate Republican Leader Jack Whitver writes: "it is impossible to legislate away the pandemic."

What a defeatist! With that attitude, no wonder over 2,000 Iowans have now died from coronavirus since the Republican majority adjourned June 14. (1/4)

Good public policy and leadership can stop or reduce the spread and save lives.

New Zealand has 5 coronavirus deaths per million people. Norway (like Iowa, not an island) has 65 deaths per million. In Iowa, it's 850 per million, more than 1 out of every 1,200 Iowans! (2/4)
Our neighbor to the north, Minnesota, which has higher population density, has fewer deaths than Iowa per million people. Minnesota has 706 deaths per million.

If Iowa had Minnesota's fatality rate, we would have 446 more Iowans alive today. (3/4)
