1. Many have heard of Solomon, son of David and one of the most famous leaders in the Bible. He is highly reputed for his wisdom, his wealth and his love for women. But this story is about his son, Rehoboam. #leadership
2. Soon as Rehoboam succeeded Solomon as king, he had a town hall meeting with his citizens. The citizens pleaded for him to reduce the taxes. Solomon had built massive infrastructure that he later needed to tax citizens heavily to maintain.
3. Rehoboam requested for a few days to consult. He started with the advisers that served his father. (Solomon with all his wisdom needed advisers). They encouraged him to serve the citizens by granting their request, and projected that the citizens would serve him in return.
4. Then Rehoboam approached his childhood friends. Those ones advised him not to tolerate nonsense. Rehoboam went with their advice. He threatened the citizens: “My finger will be thicker than my father’s waist. If my father beat you with whips, I will beat you with scorpions.”
5. Many leaders hear two sets of voices: the voices of advisers that advocate humility, integrity and high quality service, and those that advocate domination and inflate the leader’s ego. The later are usually motivated by greed for power and wealth.
6. I am convinced that the devil actively hijacks the influence of leaders in families, organizations, cities, and nations. It’s a strategic thing to do to affect the maximum number of people.
7. Therefore, those that advise leaders are more than likely to experience satanic interference in their thinking, whether they are conscious of it or not. Their gifts and skills can be employed to destroy lives.
8. Jesus once shouted “Get behind me, Satan” at his beloved disciple, Peter, over a satanically inspired piece of advice from Peter. David, King of Israel, prayed for God to defeat the advice of his gifted adviser, Ahitophel, who had defected to his rebellious son, Absalom.
9. It’s not uncommon for leaders to have good and bad advisers on their leadership teams. A leader must have conscience and discernment to make wise decisions. We must not pass up opportunities to pray for leaders and their advisers. We will be praying for our well-being.
10. Back to the story. The citizens got angry and called Rehoboam’s bluff. It was their choice to follow or not follow anybody. They decided to “unfollow” the leader and dispersed. The country broke into two. Pray for the best advice to win always.
