Voting for the #DigitalHumanities Awards @dhawards is open 🥁🥁🥁

'Press Picker', developed by @kasra_hosseini @giorgiatolfo and I as part of @LivingwMachines is up for ‘Best DH Data Visualization’

livingwithmachines.ac.uk/press-picker-v…
Newspaper history almost conspires to be difficult data eg. titles changing their name through time
We designed Press Picker to help get a handle on @britishlibrary newspapers - concentrating on the different formats the Library holds (important to know for digitisation)

We used a dense design to fit in lots of information ImageImage
and make name changes clear by bringing together connected titles with branching Image
We're working on getting the code ready to share and we hope it will be a useful tool for other libraries too.

Have a look at Press Picker and the other great @dhawards entries: dhawards.org/dhawards2020/v…

I’ve shared a collection of 4 @observablehq notebooks about drawing and animating 'waterlines'—an old technique for showing water in maps—in JavaScript

Old + new #dataviz #maps mash-up: a thread

Waterlines are a beautiful feature of western 19th Century maps – ripples or waves radiating out from the coastline

Though they aren’t the only way to draw water – water appears as *so many* different kinds of graphics in maps of the past
