AIRBORNE BUT NO GUIDANCE??? The CDC still not fully willing to update #COVID19 guidance for more premium masks & ventilation—even though prominent scientists, including members of Biden’s former COVID Task Force, sent a letter of concerns to CDC & Fauci.🧵
kpbs.org/news/2021/feb/…
2) The stern letter by very prominent scientists. They argue that because #SARSCoV2 is very airborne and infectious, the CDC must advise & provide the public, especially high risk front line workers (not just healthcare workers), should have premium masks like N95 KN95 FFP2 etc.
3) moreover, they argue proper scientific distinction must be made between aerosols that stay in the air and respiratory droplets (that drop and fall to the ground in 6 feet due to gravity). drive.google.com/file/d/1O5zd_J…
4) And they lay out that the Us also needs to ramp up production of premium masks.
5) And they called for WH to “Use the Defense Production Act to ramp up production of N95 FFRs (particularly models already certified and in wide use), elastomeric respirators, powered air purifying respirators”
6) And they emphasize the need to focus on ventilation! And respiratory protection FOR ALL WORKERS.

7) CDC’s response was pretty tepid and generic. And didn’t answer anything or say what they will do next.
8) We desperately need to make classrooms safe. Here is a detailed 🧵 how to ventilate and calculate air refresh. ?
9) air disinfection devices help stop #COVID19. Period. They work. We need to get real and use them to make schools safe.

Dear friends in British Columbia🇨🇦—you are a beautiful place & I’ve had family live/study there. You handled pandemic well last year. But BC is not doing well right now—it has the highest R currently in 🇨🇦—1.54 (figure from @DFisman) & the highest new cases per capita. Stay safe. ImageImage
3) I’m worried about other places in Canada too...

Holy hell—Sweden’s 🇸🇪 PM & public health chief both just went full anti science. And they are still leaning into nonsense natural herd euphemisms. 🧵

Sweden’s Donald Trump - @SwedishPM has now been crowned. #COVID19
2) Swedish strategy.... not a success in any way compared to its Scandinavian neighbors that had no significant excess mortality.

OUTBREAK OF NEW VARIANT IN 8 SCHOOLS in Toronto 🇨🇦—public health dept tonight just sent urgent warning about worrisome appearance of #SARSCoV2 variants (likely #B117) in 8 different local schools. Ontario has had several #B117 outbreaks already. 🧵toronto.ca/news/toronto-p… Image
2) City of Toronto has quarantined several cohorts of students in each school. But I’m not sure this is enough.
3) This Toronto variants outbreak is eerily similar to the #B117 initiated outbreak in British Columbia 🇨🇦 recently—7 schools all in a local cluster.

18 hours after my Quebec shaming tweet 🧵... mask mandate now imposed in all elementary schools!!!

Meantime, I’m watching the Florida of Canada.... errrr British Columbia 🇨🇦 #COVID19
2) Here was the Quebec outbreak thread from last night.
3) Apparently, Quebec 🇨🇦 schools not have a mask requirement for kids under 10. Hence, this madness happened once schools reopened in mid January.

I’m told schools are nagging Congress for more “flexibility” to spend the new $130 Bil school COVID aid $ so 🏫 can uselessly buy plexiglass & hire more janitors to disinfect surfaces—instead of prioritizing improving ventilation & air quality science.🤦🏻‍♂️🧵
2) I’m the biggest supporter of teachers and students—but school boards honestly don’t understand the science and importance of ventilation & air quality for airborne transmission! This is COVID pandemic assurance money—for truly stopping the pandemic not for “pandemic theatre”!
3) VENTILATION is key. Both ventilation and masks needed to reduce risk indoors in schools. But most schools are not ventilated well enough.

I can’t wait for the pandemic to be over, so that, as an epidemiologist, I can help return to tackling the other 74% chronic causes of global death.

So many people are having delayed & neglected other illnesses because of pandemic. We need to end it soon.

(HT @MaxCRoser) Image
2) excess deaths during the pandemic reflects this impact on other diseases too. People delay their doctors appts and get late cancer diagnoses and have worse outcomes, just to name one example. But it is pandemic related due to hospitals overwhelmed. We need to end COVID now!
3) We are likely going to lose way more than just one year of life expectancy when data for July 2020 - June 2021 comes out next year... it’s gonna be much worse.
