#Erdogan has won the elections in #Turkey.

#Indian #liberals are dismayed because Erdogan is trying to #Islamize Turkey.

But this is a decision of the people of Turkey.

Erdogan has won through a democratic, free and fair election.

This is what the people of Turkey want.

If you claim to love #Democracy, that is, the will of the people, then you should be happy with this result.

Erdogan is a #Democrat. He is not #Liberal. He converted the #HagiaSophia into a mosque.

But #Democracy has NOTHING TO DO with #Liberalism, and vice versa.

#Ataturk was a #Liberal in every sense of the word. He abolished the #Caliphate, closed down #Madarsa s, changed the language of the country from #Arabic to #Turkish, banned the #Fez cap, banned the #Sufi and #Dervish orders, and promoted scientific thinking.

Byzantine #mosaic of Virgin Mary holding baby Christ in her lap. There are "The Mother of God" monograms around them. 10th c. CE

South door in the vestibule of #HagiaSophia, Istanbul

To our right, Constantine the Great as a saint while crowned with the imperial stemma, carries the City that bares his name and offers it to the Virgin Mary.

The inscription reads - Constantine, the Great Emperor amongst the saints. (ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟC Ο ΕΝ ΑΓΙΟΙC ΜΕΓΑC ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥC ).
To our left, Justinian the First; also with a halo and the imperial stemma (crown). Justinian is holding the church of Hagia Sophia and offers it to the Virgin Mary.
The inscription reads - "Justinian Emperor of illustrious memory" ( ΙΟΥΣΤΙΝΙΑΝΟC Ο ΑΟΙΔΙΜOC ΒΑCIΛΕΥC)

A few days ago, I visited #HagiaSophia for the first time since #Erdogan's decision to convert it into a mosque. I was ready to be disappointed but unfortunately, the reality was much worse than my expectations. A thread and some photos of mine 🧵(1/9)
To start with, the reality in the ground is so bad that it the debate about Hagia Sophia being a mosque or a museum sounds fully irrelevant. What's at stake is the very existence of Hagia Sophia. The place is currently CROWDED. Like ABSOLUTELY CROWDED (2/9)
As a museum, you had to buy a ticket, wait in the queue etc. As a mosque, Hagia Sophia is accessible for free to everyone -which is not necessarily a bad idea. BUT you still need to control the flow of the visitors. This is not a modern concert hall, this is an UNESCO site (3/9).

This #MustWatch video is insanely sick and dangerous! Not just Muslim soldiers over the centuries taking over the #HagiaSophia, but it closes with a picture of Jerusalem's Temple Mount. Image
The video also shows Erdogan wishing safe passage to the Turkish oil exploration ship that is threatening war with Greece & friends.… Image
Erdogan doesn't see himself as the Caliph of the Neo-Ottoman Empire?

Have you visited this beautiful place?
I did!

It is Turkey’s #ChoraChurch
That Erdogan decided to convert to a mosque.
A lesson to those wishful analysts who thought #HagiaSophia is just a one off PR stunt!…
When I toured Eastern Turkey, I encountered many deserted building belonged to the displaced Armenians.
Now Erdogan want to wipe the remaining Greek history of Turkey
I find it hilarious that some still find Erdogan’s actions like converting #ChoraMonastery/church into mosque.
101ideological dogma: Why is not part of their vocabularies.
There are only grievances

#Shame on @USEmbassyTurkey’s David Satterfield for letting #Turkey use him for positive spin over its shameful conversion of #HagiaSophia.
.@VP @Mike_Pence: if THIS 👆is how your Administration demonstrates your commitment to standing up for religious pluralism and Christian minorities in #Turkey, try fooling someone else with tweets like this one:
In the meantime, @IRF_Ambassador - your colleagues at @USEmbassyTurkey completely undermine your declarations on #HagiaSophia.

Today’s Friday sermon in #HagiaSophia—with choice of Quranic verses, sword display, #Erdogan reciting of Quean, and covering of “Christian symbols” —was the official inaguration of the Islamic State of #Turkey.
This will not end here; expect the worst to come.
They did not even bother to choose verses of the Quran that advocate peace and harmony, but the sermon in #HagiaSophiaMosque was full of verses on the “infidels”
Funny how Erdogan and his fan base detest Arab nationalism. “ We all one Muslim Ummah,” they say.
But Turkish nationalism is apparently halal!

Tried to play the smartass tourist in #Istanbul today and head to #HagiaSophia to witness this historical moment, regardless what I think of the decision.
Traffic is crazy, roads are blocked, metro stations barely functioning for both security and over-crowdedness reasons, while thousands of people march in the middle of the streets towards the museum-turned-mosque with jubilant cries for Takbir filling the air.
I stand in awe of the whole scene/situation.

As the first images of changes done to #HagiaSophia's interior to prepare for the prayers marking the conversion of Hagia Sophia to a mosque, let me share some initial observations, insights, and worries with you. A thread 👇
It appears that the authorities have chosen to install a (presumably retractable) curtain mechanism to conceal the mosaics of Virgin and Child on the apse, and the Archangel Gabriel in the bema.
Unless the Turkish authorities have discovered a system that defies gravity, and flies in mid-air on its own, the 6 sail-like curtains of #HagiaSophia hang from a mechanism, possibly attached to somewhere in the bema vault or within the apse.

Today is a dark day in human history.

Some describe the 46 year occupation of #Cyprus as a “Frozen Conflict” but that is neither an accurate nor an honest description.

Cyprus’ occupation is an ongoing crime, a crime in which too many have served as accomplices of #Turkey.
Today, we do not simply “commemorate” a historic event - we bear witness to one of the longest standing war crimes (and one of the longest standing issues before the @UN Security Council: a sovereign member of the UN (and EU member) remains occupied and forcibly divided.
Many may think, “So what? Why does this Greco-Turkish tension matter to me?”

For those astonished by #Turkey’s treachery on matters like the S400s or ISIS, five decades of appeasement by @StateDepartment on #Cyprus convinced Ankara that Washington would not hold it accountable.

Erdogan will hold the first Islamic prayers in #HagiaSophia on July 24th--essentially converting the edifice into a functioning mosque. So, what does this mean for Hagia Sophia's short-term and long-term preservation? A thread 👇
On July 10 Erdogan signed a decree taking #HagiaSophia from the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and gave it over to Directorate of Religious Affairs. These are two fundamentally different institutions with different priorities.
Under the Min. of Culture, as a museum, a team of professional, trained experts monitored and maintained #HagiaSophia daily, and coordinated international teams of specialists to address possible problems (conservation of marble flooring, mosaics, structural consolidation etc.)

Dear Dr Yasir Qadhi:
I read your thoughts with great deal of interest.
I respect the depth of your knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence & your courage to shed light on some of the most sensitive issues of our time- Turkey's decision per #HagiaSophia being the latest.

You eloquently provided historical context to build your scholarly argument and you dismissed Muslims who opposed Turkey's decision as people who are simply embarrassed by how shariah supports Turkey's decision.

I am not a scholar of Islam by any stretch of imagination.

But, with all due respect, I find your argument on this issue very selective. Here is why (question form):

- Has Prophet Muhammad PBUH converted any Jewish Temple or Christian church of Medina into a mosque against the will of those communities?

1/n Do you know what Janissaries are?

They were the main reason for the fall of Constantinople. They were elite forces of #Ottoman Empire comprised of young Christian boys which were captured by #Turkish Army from Christian states.

2/n This means Islamic #Sultan destroyed Christians rule and ended the #Byzantine Empire which lasted nearly 1,500 years by the help of Christian boys.

They were the same forces which conquered and turned the #HagiaSophia into a mosque.
3/n The Janissaries were elite fighters that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops, personal bodyguards and the first modern standing army in Europe. The number grew from 20,000 in 1575, to 49,000 (1591), dropped to a low of 17,000 (1648), then rebounded to 135,000 in 1826

A lot of people are trying to compare Hagia Sophia with Babri masjid

Don't forget

1. India Pakistan partition was based on the demand that enough land should be given to all Muslims& it was given. Yet, Hindus didnt object Muslims staying in India even after

they lost land in the names of all Muslims & Pakistan running away with extra land which they got in the names of all Muslims. Hindus had a chance to get back all the temples if they insisted that we gave land to all Muslims, so all Muslims should go to Pakistan

2. Even though it was pretty clear that Babri was built by invading a temple, the Hindus offered Muslims a separate site&compensation to build a new mosque. In Islam, a mosque isn't a very important place because Islam doesn't have a belief that God is inside a mosque. It's..

A few notes about #Turkey revoking Hagia Sophia's museum status:

1. #Erdogan is converting #HagiaSophia into a mosque, a decision that sparks risky polarization between #Muslims and #Christians. #Turkey's no shortage of mosques and the existing ones are hardly full to capacity.
2. I see some Muslims have been citing #Cordoba mosque's conversion into a cathedral since late 1400. Are you equating #Ferdinand II to #Erdogan? No civilized human being can justify what happened in #Spain against Muslims and #Jews and their places of worship. Stop the nonsense
3. Amidst the turbulent and troubled times, #Turkey and the Muslim nations, who raise concerns against #Islamophobia, must set an example of tolerance and religious harmony instead of stoking undue to hate or controversy. #HagiaSophia symbolizes a shared heritage. #UNAOC

The implications of #Erdogan’s decision to convert #HagiaSophia to a mosque are enormous.
For starter, who can stop #Israel now from using the Turkish precedent to convert Al-Aqsa mosque to a Jewish temple?
How about the endless mosques scattered around the globe that were once Churches and Temples?
Who can stop the tit-for-tat?
