The #OprahMeghanHarry interview has exposed the monarchy for the decrepit institution that it is. #AbolishTheMonarchy is currently trending, showing the anger that people feel towards this rotten relic. But why do we still have a monarchy? And how do we get rid of it? [A THREAD]
In this article from last year, we analysed the so-called 'Megxit' crisis, when Meghan and Harry took their first steps on the path to 'financial independence'. We noted that this dispute merely reflects the crisis at the heart of the British monarchy.

socialist.net/megxit-and-the…
As we explained, "The British monarchy has always acted as window dressing for the rule of the bosses. The pomp and ceremony of the institution... are supposed to inspire awe and reverence... the state, as the repressive tool of class rule, [is] given some kind of “dignity”.
"The secrecy and seclusion of the royal family is a key ingredient in the whole show. By remaining aloof, the institution is supposed to retain some air of mystery." But this air of dignity was cut across by the messy departure of #MeghanAndHarry.
"A question mark is growing over [the monarchy's] rule. And this just at a time when they are most needed by the ruling class. This is no accident. The crisis of capitalism has led to unprecedented tumult and will lead to increasingly bitter class battles."
"Revolutionary events will be on the order of the day in Britain. It is at this time that the monarchy would emerge from the shadows and its powers would be shown for what they are: an insurance policy for the ruling class."
As Alan Woods comments elsewhere, "It is necessary to understand that the Monarchy is not simply a harmless anachronism with no powers. It is an important reserve weapon of reaction... which can be brought into play at a time of national crisis."

It is therefore clear that we must unashamedly stand for the overthrow of the monarchy, which can and will be used as an emergency weapon against the movement of the working class. #AbolishTheMonarchy
Alan Woods continues: "The task of removing this obstacle - along with the House of Lords... will be the prior condition of success for a future Labour government that is not content to accept the dictates of capitalism but is determined to abolish it."

#RedArchives - To kick off this week's theme of 'revolutionary women', we re-publish this article from 2018 on the Dagenham machinists' strike of 1968, an event which became a turning point in the fight for equality. #IWD2021 #IWD #Marxism #Socialism

socialist.net/the-dagenham-m…
The Dagenham strike was not the first such strike, and it would certainly not be the last. However, by standing up against bosses, union officials, and even other workers, they would send a message that has stood the test of time and inspires still. #IWD2021 #IWD #Strike Image
Correction: this month's* theme.

Leaked plans revealed that the Labour party leadership are seeking to 'rebrand' the party along 'patriotic' lines. With Starmer's approval ratings falling, the right think that cloaking themselves in Union flag bunting will win back the 'red wall'. [A THREAD]

Image: @guardian Image
As we have explained, this flag-waving rhetoric is doomed to fail: "Rather than lulling ‘Red Wall’ voters back to Labour, it plays straight into the hands of [the Tories], who will have no qualms about pulling politics even further to the right." #Starmer

What's the logical conclusion of this reheated Blairism? "The result will not be to gain the Labour Party votes, but to embolden nationalists and xenophobes, leading to a ramping up of attacks on migrants, of racism, and of imperialist military adventures." Image
