Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We have administered about 297.6K vaccine doses, 91K+ ABs are now fully immunized. Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 278 new cases & completed about 5.5K tests. We ID’d 6 new variant cases, for a total of 659. (1/12)
Our positivity rate is about 5.4% & our R-value province wide is 0.95. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 251 schools, about 10% of schools in AB w/ 961 cases since Jan. 11. There are 254 ppl in hospital for COVID-19 treatment, incl. 36 in ICU. (2/12)
Sadly, 6 new deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. Each life lost reminds us about the serious nature of this virus and the need to protect each other from it. I extend my sympathies to all those mourning a loss no matter the cause. (3/12)
AHS is arranging immunization for residents in retirement centres, lodges, supportive living & other congregate living facilities w/ resident services such as common dining facilities, where at least one resident is 75+. AHS has contacted eligible facilities directly. (4/12)
Work camps, condo complexes for ppl over a certain age, or retirement communities are not considered congregate living facilities for this stage. Ppl in these settings may book vaccine appts through AHS or a participating pharmacy when eligible. (5/12)
Spots are still available for Albertans aged 75+. If you haven’t booked your vaccination yet, please do so ASAP. Appts are available at a participating pharmacy, through AHS by calling 811 or booking online. (6/12)
Beginning Mar. 10, we will offer AZ vaccine to ABs age 64 & FNMI people age 49 w/no severe chronic illnesses. We’ll only receive 58.5K doses & cannot book everyone at once. We will open bookings through AHS based on birth year – AB born in 1957 & FNMI born in 1972. (7/12)
Please do not contact pharmacies, they are not carrying the AZ vaccine at this time. We will expand to other birth years in future days if supply is available. This is a fairly large age group, so we may not progress through all birth years at this time. (8/12)
Everyone will eventually have a chance to be immunized, whether sooner with AstraZeneca or later with Pfizer or Moderna when available. If you are not eligible for AstraZeneca this week, please do not call 811 or try to book online. (9/12)
Group 2A can begin booking Mar. 15. Pharmacies can book appts for 65-74 no matter yr of birth. 156 have been added outside #YEG, #YYC & Red Deer. AHS will be booking online by birth year only – starting w/ ppl born in 1947, or 1962 for FNMI ppl living off-reserve. (10/12)
FNMI ppl, aged 50+, on-reserve can book appts. through First Nation health centres on-reserve. Off-reserve can start booking via pharmacies on Day 1, or online, starting w/ ppl born in 1947. Do not try to book now. Please be patient. (11/12)
In just 4 months every adult AB who wants to be immunized will receive their 1st dose. Until then, all that is standing between another wave of COVID-19 moving into our hospitals is us & our actions. We must continue to do our part for the health and wellbeing of all ABs. (12/12)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 399 new cases of COVID-19 & completed about 10.4K tests. Our positivity rate is 3.7%. There are active alerts or outbreaks in 259 schools, or about 11% of the schools in AB w/ 1,017 total cases. (1/9)
We have ID’d 47 new variant cases – 734 total. AB has been able to slow the growth of variants. Active cases w/variants have risen from 3-9% the past 6 wks. Other jurisdictions have risen from 3-4% to over 1/2 of cases. If we work together, we can continue to limit spread. (2/9)
There are 254 ppl in hospital, incl. 37 in ICU. Sadly, 2 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs. This leaves 2 more families grieving their loved ones. My sympathies go to them, those who are in hosp. or ICU & the families who are watching loved ones battle this virus. (3/9)

With the easing of restrictions in Step 2, I ask all ABs to continue taking all the necessary steps to protect one another. COVID-19 & its variants will seize any opportunity to spread through our families & our communities. It is up to each of us to not let that happen. (3/4)

I know that some parents may be wondering about school safety and the effectiveness of our current measures against #COVID19AB variants. So far, 32 schools have had a variant case exposure. Of these, only 9 have had any in-school transmission. (1/6)
It’s important to remember that the variants of concern spread the same way as the current dominant strain – by being close to an infectious person. Measures that limit transmission and reduce close contact, among other steps, work on variants too. (2/6)
Since in-person learning began, evidence suggests that schools are not a primary driver of COVID-19 transmission and that measures in place to minimize spread are largely working thanks to the effort and attention of our teachers, staff & students. (3/6)

Community transmission impacts all of us, including those in school. We all have a responsibility to help prevent the spread of #COVID19AB.

We all need to be careful, not only for ourselves but for people around us who are vulnerable. (1/6)
The number of active cases in school-aged Albertans has declined significantly since classes resumed on January 11, showing that the health measures we have in place are largely effective at reducing in-school transmission. (2/6)
Health officials have not required any school closures to date, though sometimes operational decisions can be made by a school authority. Local AHS officials work with cases and schools to prevent spread and protect the health of everyone involved. (3/6)

AHS is working extremely hard to book ABs age 75+ as fast as possible. I know there have been challenges & that it can be frustrating to wait. Thank you for your patience today & as the rollout continues. 25K+ have already booked & many more will come in the days ahead. (3/4)
