#FBI Director Christopher Wray will discuss the role civic education plays in national security during a webcast this afternoon at 2 p.m. EST. You can watch live at ow.ly/wPk650DWdZc. #NatSec @CSIS
During his remarks, Director Wray described how civic education intersects with national security and the FBI’s work: “First, it intersects with some of the threats the FBI and our nation confront today, and second, it can shape how we do our work.” ow.ly/tPBU50DXDI9
Wray: One example of how civic education affects a current national security threat is election security—and more broadly, the problem of malign foreign influence, which has been a top concern for the FBI recently.
Wray: We’re the lead federal agency for identifying and combating malign foreign influence operations that target U.S. democratic institutions and values—things like the rule of law, free and fair elections, an independent judicial system, and freedom of speech and of the press.
Wray: Our adversaries are doing all they can to undermine those institutions and to confuse and divide Americans by spreading disinformation, especially through social media. So the FBI’s been working hard to combat those efforts, along with our partners.
Wray: But at the end of the day, no amount of FBI investigating can, by itself, sufficiently insulate our country from this threat.
Wray: Ultimately, our best defense is a well-informed public—citizens who are thoughtful, discerning consumers of all the information that’s out there and who have a solid understanding of how our democratic institutions work.

Statement on Microsoft Exchange Server Vulnerabilities ow.ly/Yp9950DS4s0
The #FBI and our interagency and private sector partners are tracking Microsoft’s emergency patch for previously unknown vulnerabilities in email server software. Network owners should immediately patch their systems to help protect against attacks. #Cybersecurity
However, patching does not remediate compromised servers. Organizations that know they have compromised servers should immediately contact their local FBI office. ow.ly/PJ6u50DSijA

#ICYMI: During a congressional hearing this week, #FBI Director Christopher Wray discussed how end-to-end encryption threatens the FBI’s mission to protect the American people from federal crimes, including crimes against children, cyberattacks, and terrorism.
Wray: We are concerned that ... no matter how bulletproof or ironclad the legal authority, no matter how compelling the facts and circumstances, no matter how horrific the crime ... we will not be able to get access to the content that we need to keep people safe.
Wray: What we have been suggesting ... is for the companies themselves to build in a way to have legal access when confronted with a proper legal authority so that they can get access to information and provide it in response to a warrant or a court order.

Director Christopher Wray’s Statement on Violent Activity at the U.S. Capitol Building ow.ly/dFsX50D2CR4
Director Wray: The violence and destruction of property at the U.S. Capitol building yesterday showed a blatant and appalling disregard for our institutions of government and the orderly administration of the democratic process.
Director Wray: As we’ve said consistently, we do not tolerate violent agitators and extremists who use the guise of First Amendment-protected activity to incite violence and wreak havoc. Such behavior betrays the values of our democracy.

Wray: At the #FBI, we’ve been fighting the cyber threat for many years now. ... We’ve become known for our efforts to call out destabilizing and damaging #cyber activity by nation-state actors. But we are also particularly focused on the threat posed by cybercriminals. @wef
Wray: Just like we’ve done throughout our 112-year history of fighting crime and terrorism, our goal is to impose risk and consequences on bad actors in cyberspace—whoever and wherever they are. @wef
