#Buraaq #Islam #Muslims
The @DaakVaak page posted this image of Buraaq, the mythical winged creature in which the Prophet is said to have ascended to the heavens. They mentioned that paintings of Buraq have existed for centuries in various cultures. Some Muslims jumped at the admins...
... asking them to take down the image. Some said it was blasphemous, others called for a boycott of @DaakVaak and yet others, using obscene language to defend their ‘islamic ethics’ wanted the page to be banned! Needless to say the page showcases art, literature and culture...
...the point is not about whether this is Islamic or not or whether representational art is permitted. That debate can happen in another forum but what is shocking is the effort to censor and constrain people to accept a particular interpretation of what’s Islamic or not...
...some people wrote that there’s no precedent for this conception of Buraq but the earliest mention of such a creature is in Ibn Ishaq’s biography of the Prophet written in the 8tj century. Subsequently, the Ottomans, Safavids, Mughals and many others patronised paintings of...
...#Buraq and these paintings are historical reminders of the aesthetic sensibilities of people from different cultures and times. One of the most troubling aspects of certain new movements in the Muslim world is that they insist on erasing history and judging...
... other Muslims. Their ahistoricity combined with their advocacy of an acultural globalised and homogenous Muslim identity is a modern phenomenon and in contradiction to what they think, it has nothing to do with tradition. Islam is a set of universal principles, which...
...inevitably embeds itself in various languages and expresses itself through various cultural matrices. Certainly there can be a debate about what crosses lines but @DaakVaak’s post merely reposted a piece of folk art and therefore drew the ire of some young people...
You can argue about figurative art, but there’s nothing Islamic about forcibly getting others to conform to a set notion of Islam. Today Muslims can’t even agree on who is a #Muslim, let alone on what is #Islamic! Let’s question history but let’s not try to erase it!
For those of you interested in seeing the different ways in which the #Buraq has been visualised, see this website which has put together a wonderful range of images from across centuries and cultures:

I disagree with much of what Dr Zafarul Islam Khan said in his statement but why the witch-hunt? Let him express his views and let others criticise!

The govt is obsessed with sedition and Freud would have had a field day explaining why members of BJP are behaving in this manner!
Zafarul-Islam Khan Sahib has the right to express what he wants whether you agree with him or not. He had himself apologised for not being sensitive about both the timing and content of the post but this witch hunt is ridiculous.

I have gone through the post and I must say that I disagree with much of it but I still defend his right to express his opinion. Firstly I don’t think the Arabs really care what happens to South Asian Muslims in the first place.
