0/63: Here is my 63-part trivia thread on the 63rd Grammy Awards.
1/63: Here are the nominations in the four general field categories.
2/63: Artists with four or more nominations. @Beyonce leads the way with nine.
3/63: @BillieEilish won Record of the Year last year for “Bad Guy,” and is nominated again for “Everything I Wanted.” She could join @Roberta_Flack and @U2 as the only performers to win Record of the Year in back-to-back years.
4/63: @Beyonce is nominated Record of the Year for “Black Parade,” and is also featured on fellow nominee “Savage” by Megan @TheeStallion. The last person to do that was Bruce @Springsteen in 1986 (solo for “Born in the U.S.A.” and part of “We Are the World”).
5/63: This is @Beyonce’s 7th Record of the Year nomination, which ties Frank Sinatra for the most all-time.
6/63: @PostMalone (“Circles”) joins Frank Sinatra, @Roberta_Flack, and @SteveWinwood as the only artists nominated 3+ consecutive times for Record of the Year. Post Malone was nominated for “Rockstar” in 2019 and “Sunflower” in 2020.
7/63: Just over half (32/62) of Grammy years saw Record and Song of the Year go to the same song. Four songs are up for both in 2021:
-“Black Parade” (@Beyonce)
-“Circles” (@PostMalone)
-“Don’t Start Now” (@DuaLipa)
-“Everything I Wanted” (@BillieEilish)
8/63: Every Song of the Year title starts with a letter from A to I (if “The Box” is counted as B). That’s only happened once before in 1997, when @EricClapton’s “Change the World” won the category.
9/63: This is the first time that any of the words “Black,” “Box,” “Ending,” “Parade,” or “Wanted” appeared in Song of the Year title.
10/63: @BillieEilish could become the first person ever to win Song of the Year twice in a row. Last year’s win came for “Bad Guy,” and she’s nominated again for “Everything I Wanted.”
11/63: This is @TaylorSwift13’s 5th nomination for Song of the Year, for “Cardigan.” That’s just one shy of the record (6) among songwriters, held by @PaulMcCartney and @LionelRichie.
12/63: @BlackPumasMusic made the first self-titled Album of the Year nominee since @HERmusicx two years ago. The last one to win was The Miseducation of @MsLaurynHill (1999).
13/63: @TaylorSwift13 is going for her 3rd Album of the Year win with Folklore, following Fearless and 1989. That would tie Frank Sinatra and @StevieWonder for the most wins as the main credited artist.
15/63: There are six nominees for Pop Solo Performance, the most since 2009 (which was back when the category was split into Male and Female).
16/63: This is @TaylorSwift13’s 4th nomination for Pop Solo Performance (“Cardigan”), tying her with @KellyClarkson for the most since the category took on its modern form in 2012.
17/63: @BTS_BigHit is nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Dynamite,” making them the first K-Pop group to receive a Grammy nomination.
18/63: @BTS_BigHit’s 7 members comprise the second-largest group to be nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, behind only @FlorenceMachine.
19/63: @LadyGaga and @ArianaGrande are up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Rain on Me." If they win, Lady Gaga would become the first person to win this category twice, following her win with Bradley Cooper for “Shallow.”
20/63: “Rain on Me” is @ArianaGrande’s 3rd nomination for Pop Duo/Group Performance, tied with Christina Aguilera (@xtina) and @Coldplay, and trailing only @Maroon5.
21/63: Judy is the first soundtrack from a film to be nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
22/63: Renee Zellweger (Judy) is the 5th Oscar-winning actor to be nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Others:
-@BarbraStreisand
-Frank Sinatra
-@JulieAndrews
-Liza Minnelli (who, incidentally, is the daughter of Judy Garland, played by Zellweger in the film)
24/63: @LadyGaga and @TaylorSwift13 each have a chance to join @Adele and @KellyClarkson as the only artists with multiple wins for Pop Vocal Album. Both have 4 nominations, trailing only Kelly Clarkson and @JTimberlake with 5 apiece.
25/63: @TaylorSwift13 is the first person to be nominated for Pop Vocal Album three years in a row.
26/63: Brittany Howard (@blkfootwhtfoot, “Stay High”) earns her 6th nomination for Best Rock Performance, including her 4 with @Alabama_Shakes. No one else outside of Alabama Shakes has more than 3.
27/63: This is @Beck’s 8th nomination for Best Alternative Music Album (for “Hyperspace”), tied with @Radiohead and @Bjork for the most all-time. Beck is going for his 4th win in the category, which would set a new record.
28/63: @HERmusicx is featured on two of the nominees for Best R&B Song: “Better Than I Imagine” and “Slow Down.” The only others to do that in the last 15 years were @Usher and @RickRoss, both in 2015.
29/63: @JohnLegend earns his 4th nomination for Best R&B Album for Bigger Love, tied for second-most all time behind @MaryJBlige’s 5. Legend is going for his 3rd win, which would tie @AliciaKeys for the top spot.
30/63: This is @Drake’s 6th nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance (for “Laugh Now Cry Later”). That puts him in 6th place:
-@KanyeWest: 14
-Jay-Z (@S_C_): 12
-@Rihanna: 9
-@Beyonce: 8
-@JohnLegend: 7
31/63: For Best Rap Song, Jay-Z (@S_C_, 12th nomination) and @Drake (11th nomination) both move up the leaderboard. Only @KanyeWest (15 nominations) has more.
32/63: @Nas (King’s Disease) earns his 5th nod for Best Rap Album. He now trails only Jay-Z (@S_C_, 11), @Eminem (7), and @KanyeWest (7). He also ties @TheRoots for the most nominations without a win in this category.
33/63: @MirandaLambert (“Bluebird”) ties @CarrieUnderwood with her 5th nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. Despite co-leading the category, Lambert is still looking for her first win in the category.
34/63: For Best Country Duo/Group Performance, @LittleBigTown (8 nominations) and @BrothersOsborne (6 nominations) continue to run up the scoreboard. No one else has more than 3.
35/63: @DanAndShay (“10,000 Hours,” with @JustinBieber) is looking for their third straight win in Country Duo/Group Performance. Before their two straight in 2019-20, no one had won this category twice in a row.
37/63: @RealKurtElling receives his 13th nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album, extending his record for the most all-time. Second place is Shirley Horn, with 9.
38/63: With his nom for Jesus Is King, @KanyeWest has been nominated in 14 categories:
-Album
-Contemp Christian Album
-New Artist
-R&B Song
-Rap Album
-Rap Perf
-Rap Duo/Group Perf
-Rap Solo Perf
-Rap Song
-Rap/Sung Perf
-Short Music Video
-Producer, Non-Classical
-Record
-Song
39/63: @Ricky_Martin and @Shakira are the only artists who have been nominated multiple times for Best Latin Pop or Urban Album and never lost. Martin is up for his third trophy this year for Pausa.
40/63: @TheSecretSister, Laura & Lydia Rogers (“Cabin”), are the first pair of sisters to be nominated for Best American Roots Song.
41/63: Lucinda Williams (@HappyWoman9, Good Souls Better Angels) achieves her 3rd nomination for Best Americana Album, tying @EmmylouSongbird for the most all-time.
42/63: Leonard Cohen (Thanks for the Dance) is the third person to be posthumously nominated for Best Folk Album, following Mike Auldridge and Jesse Winchester.
43/63: @ShankarAnoushka (Love Letters) has received her 6th nomination for Best Global Music Album, setting a new record for the most nominations in the category. She is still looking for her first win.
44/63: @Diplo is up for his third Grammy for Best Dance Recording (“On My Mind,” with @YouASidepiece). Only Diplo and @JTimberlake have multiple wins and no losses in this category.
45/63: @Disclosure (Energy) gets their 3rd nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album, putting them in a five-way tie for second. The @ChemBros, who won a year ago, are way out in front with 6 nominations.
47/63: David Alan Miller could join Giancarlo Guerrero and @LudovicMorlot as the only two-time winners of Best Classical Instrumental Solo. All three are conductors; no soloist has won the category twice.
48/63: @PaulMcCartney (Flaming Pie) could join @MilesDavis as the only artists to have multiple albums’ art directors win Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.
49/63: If Hyperspace wins Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical), it would be the third @Beck album to win the category, a feat matched by only Steely Dan and Michael Jackson.
50/63: Judging for Best Immersive Audio Album was postponed to later in 2021. The nature of the category requires judges to be physically present, and it was unsafe to do so in the pandemic.
51/63: David Frost and Silas Brown shared multiple nominations for Best Engineered Album (Classical), for “Porgy and Bess” and “Shostakovich: Symphony No. 13.” The last engineer to do that was Mark Donahue in 2019.
52/63: @AlastairMoock & Friends, Dog on Fleas, and The @OkeeDokeeBros all declined their nominations for Best Children’s Album due to all nominees being white and all but one being male. If the Grammys accept this, that leaves only 2 nominees, the fewest ever.
53/63: With Rachel @Maddow’s and @RonanFarrow’s nominations for Spoken Word Album, this is the first year in the 63-year history of the category that more than one of the nominations is for a journalist doing investigative reporting.
54/63: Meryl Streep (Charlotte’s Web) is nominated for Best Spoken Word Album. Her current EGOT tallies:
Emmys: 3/5
Grammys: 0/6
Oscars: 3/21
Tonys: 0/1
55/63: This marks the 7th nomination for Best Comedy Album for both @JimGaffigan and @PattonOswalt. That’s tied for 6th most all-time. George Carlin holds the record with 16.
56/63: If Frozen II wins for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media, Frozen would become the first franchise to win the category twice.
57/63: Joker could become the 4th film of the last decade to win both the Oscar for Best Score and the Grammy for Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. The first three were The Grand Budapest Hotel, La La Land, and Black Panther.
58/63: Hildur Guðnadóttir (@Hildurness) won Score Soundtrack for Visual Media a year ago for Chernobyl, and is nominated again for Joker. She could be the first back-to-back winner since Howard Shore won three years in a row for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
59/63: Star Wars Episode IX marks John Williams’ 34th nomination for Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, more than double anyone else’s total. @HansZimmer is in 2nd place with 15.
60/63: This year’s Best Song for Visual Media race features noms from 3 different "Oscar years." "Into the Unknown" & "Stand Up" were nominated last year, "Carried Me With You" was eligible this year, and "No Time to Die" could be a contender next year.
61/63: In the last 30 years, there have only been two times that a singer was nominated for both Best Music Video and Best Music Film: 1. @Beyonce, 2017: Formation, Lemonade 2. Beyonce, 2021: Brown Skin Girl, Black Is King
62/63: This is the first Grammys to be held on March 14, and the first to be held in the month of March since 3/1/1995. Bruce @Springsteen and @SherylCrow were the big winners that night.
