"The computer is the bicycle of the mind." - Steve Jobs

In 2021, we're all digital cyclists.

Here's 9 tools + hacks for your digital bike.

THREAD...
Why is the computer the bicycle of the mind?

• Steve Jobs read a study that measured the locomotion efficiency of species on earth

• The condor used the least energy to move a Kilometer

• The highlight of mother nature - human beings - came 3rd of the way down the list
• However, a human being on a bicycle blew every other species away - including the Condor.

• "A computer is the most remarkable tool we've ever come up with. And it's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds." - Steve Jobs

Let's get into pimping your bike...

Width metrics:

• Impressions
• Followers
• Likes
• Views

Depth metrics:

• DM’s
• Super fans
• Word of mouth
• Remembering it 6 months from now

All the long term wins for businesses and creators are going to those who invest in depth.
The biggest problem internet companies + creators face:

It’s much easier to measure width metrics than depth metrics currently.
This results in what I call “The Doerr Problem”

Whatever is easiest to be measured will be optimised for

We chase width because it’s easy to measure

“What gets measured gets managed.” - John Doerr

If you can measure depth, you could change the internet’s click bait culture

How one guy achieved more than the entire FBI...

Using *Google Search*.

This is the most underrated story on the internet.

THREAD...
THE BACKGROUND OF SILK ROAD:

• The anonymous marketplace operated between 2011 and 2013

• It was Amazon for illegal goods - ranging from magic mushrooms to heroin to AK47's

• It is estimated the website generated 600,000 Bitcoin in commission - $34 BILLION at today's prices
The FBI + DEA's top priority was to:

1. Unmask the founder - Known by the pseudonym "Dread Pirate Roberts"

2. Shut the website down

Despite their billions of dollars of resources, highly trained divisions, and decades of experience - they couldn't do it.

THREAD: 15 of the most useful razors and rules I've found.

Rules of thumb that simplify decisions.
Bezos' Razors:

• If unsure what action to take, let your 80-year-old self make it.

• If unsure who to work with, pick the person that has the best chances of breaking you out of a 3rd world prison.
Skinner's Law:

• If procrastinating on an item, you only have 2 options:

1. Make the pain of not doing it greater than the pain of doing it.

2. Make the pleasure of doing it greater than the pleasure of not doing it.

Flying is accidentally the best ever environment for DEEP work and reflection.

Writers like @rickygervais do their best work on airplanes.

Here's 6 reasons why.

THREAD...
What looks like a bug - can often be a feature.

“A change of perspective is worth 80 IQ points.”

The restrictions we face on airplanes is what makes the experience so liberating.
AIRPLANE FEATURE 1 - HIGH EXIT COSTS

You can't find any escapes.

If you try to escape, you face death.

Negative incentives are built into the system.

Just re-read 'The Almanack of @naval'

Despite scraping his Twitter library for the @NavalBot, @EricJorgenson included a tonne of gems I'd never heard before.

Here's my favourite 17 highlights below...

THREAD...
"Making money is not a thing you do –– it's a skill you learn." - Naval

"You should not grind at a lot of hard work until you figure out what you should be working on." - Naval
"If you're looking toward the long-term goal of getting wealthy, you should ask yourself:

1. Is this authentic to me?

2. Is it myself that I am projecting?

3. Am I productising it?

4. Am I scaling it with capital, code, media or leverage? - Naval
