.@VWGroup says will team up with partners including @northvolt to construct six EV battery cell #gigafactories in Europe in order to secure access to 240 GWh worth of cells by 2030.
.@VWGroup says @Northvolt Ett plant in Sweden's Skellefteå will be expanded to 40 GWh annual supply as will the JV plant in Salzgitter called "Northvolt Zwei".
.@VWGroup says will introduce "unified cell" starting in 2023 with the goal of lowering costs by as much as 50 percent. The new EV battery cell will be used in up to 80 percent of all group models in 2030.
.@VWGroup says the new "unified cell" will have reduce costs by as much as 50 percent for entry segment vehicles and up to 30 percent for volume segment vehicles. On average it should drive down the price of a battery to "considerably below" 100 euros per kilowatt hour.
.@Northvolt, picked as the new strategic lead supplier for premium battery cells for @VWGroup in Europe (a $14 billion order), will sell its stake in Northvolt Zwei cell plant in Salzgitter to #Volkswagen.
.@VWGroup will at the same time increase its equity stake in Swedish EV batter cell partner @Northvolt.
.@VWGroup says it will invest 400 million euros by 2025 to build and operate roughly 18,000 public fast charging stations in Europe together with partners @bp_plc, @iberdrola and @EnelGroup, representing roughly a third of the continent's overall forecast demand. #Superchargers
.@VWGroup says its MEB-based battery electric vehicles will offer bi-directional charging capability starting from 2022.
.@VWGroup says sticks to its strategic financial targets, which still foresee a capex-to-sales ratio of roughly 6 percent by 2025 as well as an annual adjusted net cash flow of more than 10 billion euros in its core automotive business.
It's like listening to @Tesla's #BatteryDay all over again. @VWGroup says it aims to use dry-coating production processes for its EV battery cells and eliminate battery modules in favour of "Cell2Pack" technology to reduce complexity, cost and weight.
.@VWGroup says will develop an industrial scale approach to recycle up to 95 percent of the raw materials in an EV battery cell. "That means everything but the separator," says VW Group Components chief Thomas Schmall.
For the remaining four European battery cell #Gigafactories expected to produce the remaining 160 GWh that is needed (on top of the 40 GWh each in Skellefteå and Salzgitter), @VWGroup says it is evaluating further sites and partners.
.@VWGroup says targeting 10 minute fast charge to reach 80 percent SoC, claims its prototype cells are currently achieving 12 minutes.
.@VWGroup provides breakdown of how it aims to reduce its EV battery cell costs by up to 50 percent.
Friendly-looking charging robot from @VWGroup reminds me a bit of Vincent from "The Black Hole"...
.@VWGroup says bi-directional charging would transform electric vehicles into useful storage of renewable power. According to the company, Germany lost 6,500 GWh worth of electricity last year by shutting off wind turbines, since there was no way to feed this power into the grid.
(Refiling this as it was improperly attached to thread): @VWGroup's Porsche says expects more than 80 percent of its global sales volume by 2030 will come from electrified vehicles.
So after two hours of presentations from numerous different executives across the Volkswagen Group as well as partners Northvolt, BP, Enel and Iberdrola, the #Powerday event has drawn to a close. VW may lag #Tesla in many areas, but it seems intent to prove it's a fast follower.
The two key takeaways for me are the 240 GWh in European cells it aims to source from six plants (either its own or held indirectly, e.g. via its stake in @Northvolt) and its MoU to build and jointly operate 18,000 fast charging points in Europe with three partners.
This 240 GWh for Europe is but a fraction of the 3,000 GWh of own production #Tesla aims to achieve, granted a global figure. Both are targeting a reduction of over half in the price per kWh.

Poor performance by Merkel's @CDU in both the state of Baden-Württemberg, home of #Daimler and #Porsche, and neighbouring Rheinland-Pfalz.
Greens by comparison can celebrate.

.@BMWGroup places sustainability at the centre of its strategy moving forward. “I firmly believe the fight against climate change and how we use resources will decide the future of our society – and of the BMW Group," says CEO Oliver Zipse.

For the first time, #BMW is setting CO2 reduction targets per vehicle that extend throughout the entire lifecycle: from the supply chain through production to the end of the use phase. The aim is to achieve at least one third fewer emissions across the entire spectrum by 2030.
.@BMWGroup is basing its goals on the guidelines of the recognised Science-Based Targets Initiative [sciencebasedtargets.org], which it will also join. Among other things, this means that the CO2 emissions from the production of fuels are also included (“well-to-wheel” approach).
