so you want to talk about anti-asian racism & policing in so-called vancouver. a thread & response to targeted VPD outreach to diasporic asian communities.
CN/CW anti-asian violence, police violence & white supremacy
(1/11)
let’s talk about the history of racist policing in so-called vancouver BC, specifically in point grey, unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) territory.
(2/11)
1924: Wong Foon Sing a domestic labourer in point grey, calls the police upon discovering his coworker Janet Smith is dead, from an apparent gunshot wound. Wong Foon Sing immediately contacted the police, who ruled her death a suicide.
(3/11)
The death, however, caught the attention of white supremacist clergymen, and the Scottish Society of Vancouver politicized Janet’s death, based on growing anti-Asian racism.
(4/11)
Wong Foon Sing was immediately identified as a suspect, despite no proof or motive. Then-mayor of point grey, JA PATON, used public office & public funds to kidnap Wong Foon Sing. not once, but twice.
(5/11)
The first kidnapping, which lasted ~ 1 day, was committed by members of the Canadian Detective Bureau.
The second kidnapping, which lasted ~ 6 weeks, was committed by kkklansmen who attended Wong Foon Sing’s home in their robes.
(6/11)
After failing to hear what they wanted, the kkklansmen let Wong Foon Sing go, and then came back in their OFFICIAL CAPACITY to arrest him and haul him off to Oakalla Prison.
that's right – THEY WERE FUCKING COPS.
(7/11)
The 6 week abduction & torture had been facilitated by the Point Grey police commission, with the blessing of the BC Attorney General.
(8/11)
In 1925, a dozen indictments were issued including for a number of prominent Point Grey officials & cops, on charges of kidnapping and unlawful confinement of a suspect. Conventiently, truth never materialized because all charges were eventually stayed by the deputy AG.
(9/11)
So yes, fuck cops, and don’t EVER trust them to keep our precious communities safe.
if you prefer pics, sharing the story in that format as well (please share widely + destroy the myth that police should serve any role in protecting racialized communities).
8 pics total.

[THREAD ON POLICING] March 15 - International Day Against Police Brutality AKA #IDAPB#IDAPB2021
#IDAPB was first observed in 1997 thanks to organizing by the Collective Opposed to Police Brutality (Montreal), and the Black Flag group (Switzerland).

“Cdn” media portrays police brutality as something that stops at an arbitrary border -everywhere there are police there is police brutality. During the #BLM protests of 2020, Montreal police used tear gas against protesters, a chemical weapon banned for use in warfare.

From 2000-17, the #VPD in the #DTES and the #RCMP in Northern BC (V0J) killed people at the highest rates in Canada. When police attend wellness checks, the results can be fatal. Over 70% of those killed by police in BC were experiencing a mental health crisis.
