School strike week 100!
100 weeks ago I never would have believed that I’d still be doing this today...
Since then, a lot has happened. Many millions have taken to the streets to continue the decades-long and never-ending fight for climate- and environmental justice. 1/4
But since then, the world has also emitted over 80Gt of CO2.
We have lost yet another 2 crucial years to inaction, and the climate- and ecological crisis has still never once been treated as a crisis. The changes and level of awareness needed are still nowhere in sight. 2/4
These are historical times, what we do or don’t do right now will define the rest of our lives as well as the lives of our children and grandchildren. So spend your time wisely. 3/4
On Saturday @uniper_energy and Finnish state owned @Fortum will open a brand new coal power plant #Datteln4 in Germany.
Those in power clearly lied when they said they cared about their children’s future.
If you needed proof that their words and promises were empty, this is it.
”Uniper is threatening to sue the Dutch government over a plan to phase out coal power by 2030”.
In Sweden @FortumSverige is running a huge “green” campaign saying that “The future is already here”, and that they ”have decided to take care of the future”.
We can’t solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis and we must unite behind experts and science.
This of course goes for all crises.
Now the experts urge us to avoid big public gatherings for a better chance to #flattenthecurve and slow the spreading of the Coronavirus. 1/4
So I personally recommend that we do as the experts say. Especially in high-risk areas.
We young people are the least affected by this virus but it’s essential that we act in solidarity with the most vulnerable and that we act in the best interest of our common society. 2/4
The climate and ecological crisis is the biggest crisis humanity has ever faced but for now (of course depending on where you live) we’ll have to find new ways to create public awareness & advocate for change that don’t involve too big crowds - listen to local authorities. 3/4
Here we go again...
As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever - going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behaviour and my differences.
They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory. (Thread->)
It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus, since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis.
Being different is not an illness and the current, best available science is not opinions - it’s facts. ->
I honestly don’t understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science, when they could do something good instead. I guess they must simply feel so threatened by us. ->
Today I have been following the reports and articles about the @IPCC_CH report.
I am astonished that we are still talking about the 1,5 degree target as a reachable goal, without mentioning the ENORMOUS requirements that would take. -->
We already have at least 1,5 degrees (pollution hides at least 0,5 degrees ) built up in the system. In the future, we might find a way to limit the warming by 1,5 degrees, and that is almost necessary, with solutions that doesn't exist today. But that can't be our priority now.->
We have less than two years left now to bend the emission curve, and we had this chance to try to inform people about the crisis we are in, but instead we take that opportunity to spread false hope.
IPCC plays huge gamble with our future. #climatecrisis#klimatkris#ipcc
