Texans are in for an intense week in voting rights at #txlege- some of the biggest voter suppression bills are getting their first hearings. Here's what's ahead, starting with today's Sen State Affairs hearing, where SB 7 will be heard.

Last week Gov. Abbott held a press conference on SB 7 and some of its fellow voter suppression bills. The bill not only makes it harder for elderly Texans and Texans with disabilities to vote, but allows intimidation tactics at polling places.

Of the bills that were discussed in the press conference, SB 7 and HB 6 are getting the most attention, as both are huge bills with devastating consequences for Texas voters. But unfortunately, SB 7 isn't the only voter suppression bill being heard today.

SB 1114 by Sen. Bettencourt and SB 1235 by Sen. Hughes will also be heard in today's hearing. These bills allow the TX Secretary of State to conduct purges of the voter rolls, harkening back to last session's disastrous voter purge by then-acting Secretary of State David Whitley.
All 3 of these bills are toxic and will be heard today starting at 9am. Our senior attorney @jcslattery will testify against each of them at the Capitol, so keep an eye out here for our coverage of his words. You can watch the State Affairs hearing here: senate.texas.gov/av-live.php
That brings us to Thursday, when the House Elections Committee will hear HB 6, an omnibus voter suppression bill with the same goals as SB 7. We'll be there to testify against that bill too. The hearing starts at 8am, and will be livestreamed like today's hearing.
We encourage all of you who are Texas residents to submit written comments about how HB 6 will affect you on the Committee's website at the following link before the hearing starts on Thursday: comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c240
These bills are not only part of Gov. Abbott's voter suppression agenda, but part of a national trend in which legislators are ramming through bills to make it harder and scarier to vote, particularly for voters of color. Frankly, #TXDeservesBetter
It's up to all of us to speak out against these voter suppression bills and make it clear that the #txlege should be prioritizing our healthcare and the state's electrical grid, not ripping ballots from the hands of the elderly, people of color, and Texans with disabilities.
Here's one more action you can take: tell Gov. Abbott and state legislators that this voter suppression scheme must end, because #TXDeservesBetter: txcivilrights.org/stop-sb6-hb7/

Just 4 days from Christmas, the Trump Administration has demanded a federal judge grant it immediate possession of the Cavazos family’s property so they can continue sprinting to build the border wall. Construction is already happening right by the property.
If this proceeds as the government plans, the Cavazos family wouldn’t be paid just compensation before the wall comes up, and the accessibility accommodations for Fred Cavazos they’ve been fighting for just to access their own riverside land may never be fulfilled.
.@JoeBiden takes office in 29 days and has said “Not Another Foot of Wall,” yet DHS is speeding up construction and suing more landowners now. December has already had 23 lawsuits, the highest ever in one month during the entire Trump Administration, bringing to 196.

BREAKING: we have stopped the expulsion of all unaccompanied children that were detained in the Hampton Inn Hotel. Thanks to our lawsuit with the @ACLU, the government has agreed to transfer them to ORR custody, as should have happened in the first place. #FreeThemAll
This is a clear admission of wrongdoing by the Trump administration. However, we know there were many other families that were detained in that hotel and might still be disappeared. We’ll continue our efforts to stop this.
Thanks to all of you, we were able to expose the government's wrongdoing. We caught them red-handed. Now we need Congress to investigate other black sites: txcivilrights.org/hotels

BREAKING: We're suing.

Along with @KIND, @ACLU, and dozens unaccompanied children detained in hotels facing imminent expulsion from the country, we're suing the Trump admin to stop their expulsion, give them legal representation, & allow them to seek asylum. #FreeThemAll
This week, we’ve uncovered potentially hundreds of asylum-seekers and children detained in a hotel in McAllen, Texas. The government is disappearing asylum seekers— even children— without a trace.

Without due process, there’s no paper trail. When we tried to provide legal assistance at a hotel in McAllen where they are illegally detaining people, our staff was violently shoved and removed.

BREAKING: Our attorney was aggressively rejected from trying to offer help to immigrant children illegally detained at a Hampton Inn in McAllen, TX. He and another of our staffer were violently shoved into the hotel elevator and were told they could not offer help. #FreeThemALL!
Second video. Reminder: These individuals shoving our staff are hired by @DHSgov to care for CHILDREN. #FreeThemAll
Now we are standing outside the hotel with signs showing our legal hotline hoping the people inside- children and asylum seekers- can reach out to us for help. Some are holding small signs trying to communicate with us. #FreeThemAll

Yesterday, we uncovered that DHS is detaining children in a hotel in McAllen, TX before illegally & immorally expelling them from the US without any due process.

The problem isn't just that kids are detained in hotels; They're also expelled & denied the right to asylum. Thread👇
DHS is using the hotels as secret sites to detain children to circumvent the law. These hotels are black sites to hold children on the way to expulsion without anyone finding out and no due process. apnews.com/c9b671b206060f…
We KNOW that thousands of people have been expelled without their day in court, including children in these hotels. Without due process, there’s no paper trail, so it’s very hard to hold the gov't accountable and get the kids home. Especially since we’re sheltering in place.

Today, Congress held its first hearing on the Trump admin's so-called “Migrant Protection Protocols” or "Remain in Mexico" program since the policy began >10 months ago. This program violates the human & legal rights of tens of thousands of asylum-seekers at our southern border.
It comes down to this: Trump is trying to end asylum, trample human dignity and due process.

During the >2 hour hearing, Congress heard from expert witnesses who are on the ground daily, including our own staff attorney, Erin Thorn Vela.
We shared harrowing stories of our clients, how this policy has forced them into despair with severe violations of their rights. What should have been a beacon of safety for them upon arriving to our borders has turned into a life-threatening nightmare caused by the US government
