The attack on LGBTQ people in state legislatures is getting worse.
We are now tracking at least 174 anti-LGBTQ bills.
95 of those explicitly target trans people.
46 are anti-trans sports bills.
29 would limit health care for trans people.
Please read and share this thread.
Let’s start with the bills that have passed.
Last night, the Tennessee legislature voted to advance #HB3#SB228, an anti-LGBTQ bill that would ban trans kids in middle and high school from playing sports.
If you live in TN, call the Governor and demand a veto: 615-741-2001
Yesterday, Arkansas’ Senate also passed #SB354, an anti-trans sports ban. It’s headed to Governor @AsaHutchinson’s desk for signature.
Call his office at 501-682-2345 and demand a veto.
In South Dakota, @GovKristiNoem continues to condone discrimination against trans kids by proposing an amended version of #HB1217, which would ban trans kids from elementary through high school from playing sports with their friends.
Call her office at 605-773-3212.
Let’s take a moment to be clear here: The problems that these anti-trans politicians say we need to address are manufactured. The anguish they are causing trans kids is real.
Last week, Arkansas legislators also passed #SB289 a medical refusal bill that would allow doctors and health care workers to deny services to LGBTQ people.
If you live in Arkansas, call the Governor @AsaHutchinson’s office at (501) 682-2345.
Between now and Friday, 13 anti-LGBTQ bills will be considered in legislative chambers or committees across the country. Today as many as six anti-LGBTQ bills could be heard, including four in Tennessee:
The Texas Senate Business & Commerce Committee heard #SB14, a bill that would preempt city-level protections for LGBTQ people, at 8 AM CT.
Kansas legislators will be holding a hearing on #SB208, an anti-trans sports bill, at 2:30 PM ET.
On Wednesday, the TN legislature (sensing a pattern here?) is scheduled to hear several more anti-LGBTQ bills, including bills limiting access to health care for trans people and #SB1367, which would allow anti-trans students to sue over bathrooms accommodating their trans peers.
On Thursday, the Texas House Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence Committee will hear #HB610, which could be used to pre-empt local licensing requirements that say applicants must comply with non-discrimination law.
And on Friday, Montana’s Judiciary Committee will hear #SB280, which would make it harder for transgender Montanans to amend their birth certificates.
Two good pieces of news this week came out of Virginia, where Governor Ralph Northam signed #SB1321, an adoption bill, and #HB2130, establishing a Virginia LGBTQ+ Advisory Board. We applaud Virginia’s elected officials for their leadership.
What does this all add up to?
Any one of the bad bills covered in this thread would have a devastating impact on LGBTQ people. Together, they constitute a five-alarm crisis.
The way to stop them is to organize. We need your voices.
If you live in any of the states mentioned above, call your legislators. Demand they vote against these bills. And then join our grassroots team, so we can keep you updated and send you alerts wherever LGBTQ people are under attack. act.hrc.org/page/75829/pet…

Our community is under attack. Please read and share this thread.

22 bills to allow discrimination under the guise of religious freedom.
That is just the start.
In Mississippi and South Dakota, state legislators have already passed bills targeting LGBTQ people.
Both states passed bills to ban trans girls from playing sports. SD legislators also passed a religious refusal bill granting a license to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

Please read and share this thread.
Alabama's State Senate is set to vote today on HB1/SB10, an anti-trans bill that would make it illegal for doctors to provide gender-affirming care—with potential prison sentences up to 10 years. If you live in Alabama, please call your legislators today.
An anti-trans sports bill (HB 391) passed the Alabama House Judiciary Committee last Wednesday and a floor vote is also expected today.
How far have we come with @PeteButtigieg’s confirmation?
In 1999, James Hormel was nominated as Ambassador to Luxembourg, becoming the first openly LGBTQ nominee in American history.
His nomination was held up for two years by Republicans who said being gay was disqualifying.
One of the politicians who held Hormel’s nomination, Sen. Bob Smith of New Hampshire, told the press: "This is not a tolerance issue. This is a matter of advocacy of the gay lifestyle.”
Eventually, Bill Clinton was forced to make a recess appointment to allow Hormel to serve.
Pete Buttigieg cited Hormel’s story leading up to his confirmation hearing, recalling how a qualified public servant was attacked and undermined simply because of who he loved.
The Senate is currently discussing the #EqualityAct and why now is the time to ensure full protections for LGBTQ people. We must put this legislation to a vote and secure non-discrimination protections for our community. (THREAD)
“Let us put the Equality Act on the floor of the Senate. Let us debate it and let us pass it to act on the premise that Senator Ted Kennedy expressed the promise of America will never be fulfilled as long as justice is denied to even one.” - @SenJeffMerkley#EqualityAct
“As we approach another anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that sparked the modern LGBTQ equality movement, I’m also mindful of the leadership of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, transgender women of color, in that historic moment." - @SenatorBaldwin#EqualityAct
