The Senate is currently discussing the #EqualityAct and why now is the time to ensure full protections for LGBTQ people. We must put this legislation to a vote and secure non-discrimination protections for our community. (THREAD)
“Let us put the Equality Act on the floor of the Senate. Let us debate it and let us pass it to act on the premise that Senator Ted Kennedy expressed the promise of America will never be fulfilled as long as justice is denied to even one.” - @SenJeffMerkley #EqualityAct
“As we approach another anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that sparked the modern LGBTQ equality movement, I’m also mindful of the leadership of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, transgender women of color, in that historic moment." - @SenatorBaldwin #EqualityAct

Hi everyone, it’s @jessetyler - advocate, actor and star of @ModernFam. I’m doing an #HRCTwitterTakeover to celebrate the finale of #ModernFamily and share how you can help keep moving the needle forward on LGBTQ issues!
Over the last 11 seasons, @ModernFam has transformed people’s perceptions of the LGBTQ community through the characters of Mitchell and Cam, showing Americans that queer people have the same hopes and ambitions in life as everyone else. - @jessetyler #HRCTwitterTakeover
We stood at the forefront of the fight for marriage equality both on and off screen, joining @HRC in advocating for the eventual #SCOTUS decision that established #LoveIsLove. - @jessetyler #HRCTwitterTakeover @ModernFam hrc.org/press/modern-f…

1/ Happy #PrideMonth!

This year, @HRC is celebrating 50 years of #Pride, and two momentous anniversaries in #LGBTQ history: the 50th anniversary of the uprising at #Stonewall in 1969 and the first Pride parade a year later. #Stonewall50 #Pride2019
2/ In the earliest hours of June 28, 1969, a group of LGBTQ people reached their tipping point. They were peacefully enjoying the evening at the #Stonewall Inn in New York City when police raided the bar and started hauling out the patrons.
3/ No longer willing to take the harassment and discrimination, the LGBTQ individuals at #Stonewall fought back. Their protest lasted six days … and sparked a movement that is still building today. #Pride2019

It is imperative that the American people know how his extremist views directly impact the LGBTQ community.
3/ As the former governor of Indiana, Mike Pence opposed needle exchanges for HIV prevention.
That stance helped cause an HIV outbreak in Indiana.
This is dangerous and wrong.

1/ Today, @realDonaldTrump praised the actions of his administration & radical lawmakers in places like Kansas & Oklahoma who are licensing anti-LGBTQ discrimination in child welfare services.

Here's what you need to know about the dangerous consequences of measures like these:
2/ Nine states, including 5 states in the last 3 years, have passed laws allowing taxpayer-funded child welfare programs (adoption and foster care services) to pick and choose to whom they provide the services the government has paid them to provide.
3/ These state laws allow agencies to refuse to work with #LGBTQ people, and some also allow them to refuse various medical treatments to LGBTQ children in their care.

This morning brought breaking news that longtime LGBTQ advocate and friend of HRC, Jussie Smollett, was the victim of a possible hate crime attack in which racist, homophobic slurs were hurled as he was reportedly beaten in Chicago.

Statement from @HRC President @ChadHGriffin:
"This shocking attack on our friend & tremendous advocate Jussie Smollett is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident.
There is an alarming epidemic of hate violence in our country that disproportionately targets Black people, LGBTQ people, and religious minorities -- and particularly those living at the intersections of multiple identities.

1/ Allowing Donald Trump & Mike Pence's transgender troop ban to go into effect harms both transgender service members & our national security.

As this critical matter makes its way through the courts, brave trans patriots deserve to have their constitutional rights protected.

1/ 2018 was a year of progress in banning the abusive practice known as “conversion therapy.”

As we start 2019, 15 states plus DC protect LGBTQ youth from this form of child abuse.
2/ Despite national, bipartisan support to end this practice, 𝟴 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 in 2018 actually cast a vote in support of “conversion therapy."

@HRC, our members and supporters mobilized to defeat these dangerous candidates at the ballot box. 🗳🗳

✅ @MikeLevinCA ousted Diane Harkey
@TJCoxCongress ousted David Valadao
@KatiePorterOC ousted Mimi Walters

@MikieSherrill ousted Jay Webber

1/🚨Mike Pence is on a voter suppression tour this week.

Tomorrow, he campaigns in Kansas for Kris Kobach, with whom he led Trump’s discriminatory “Voter Fraud” commission.
2/ In Georgia, civil rights groups are suing gubernatorial candidate @BrianKempGA for enforcing the state’s discriminatory “exact match” requirement — impacting mostly Black voters ahead of the midterms. cnn.com/2018/10/12/pol…
3/ In 2017, @mike_pence & @KrisKobach1787 lead a committee to prove @realDonaldTrump’s claim that millions of Black & Latino voters casted ballots illegally in the 2016 election.

Facing multiple lawsuits & no real evidence of fraud, the group disbanded.

1/ We’ve spent months on the front lines fighting this nomination. From mobilizing for rallies, sharing stories of survival & making thousands on thousands of calls to senators—including 15,000 @HRC members today.

We’ve left nothing on the field in the fight to #StopKavanaugh.
2/ And we have done that because the stakes of this nomination—for LGBTQ people, for women, for people of color, for survivors of sexual assault—could not be any higher. Across the country, we have turned out to say we #BelieveSurvivors and we must #StopKavanaugh.
3/ Unfortunately @SenatorCollins, @Sen_JoeManchin and others in the U.S. Senate made clear today that they will nevertheless back this dangerous, unqualified nominee. This is a slap in the face to Americans everywhere. #StopKavanaugh
