The Senate is currently discussing the #EqualityAct and why now is the time to ensure full protections for LGBTQ people. We must put this legislation to a vote and secure non-discrimination protections for our community. (THREAD)
“Let us put the Equality Act on the floor of the Senate. Let us debate it and let us pass it to act on the premise that Senator Ted Kennedy expressed the promise of America will never be fulfilled as long as justice is denied to even one.” - @SenJeffMerkley#EqualityAct
“As we approach another anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that sparked the modern LGBTQ equality movement, I’m also mindful of the leadership of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, transgender women of color, in that historic moment." - @SenatorBaldwin#EqualityAct
Over the last 11 seasons, @ModernFam has transformed people’s perceptions of the LGBTQ community through the characters of Mitchell and Cam, showing Americans that queer people have the same hopes and ambitions in life as everyone else. - @jessetyler#HRCTwitterTakeover
2/ Over the past several months, we’ve seen how the Trump-Pence administration’s cruel immigration policies are harming LGBTQ and other asylum seekers who are fleeing violence in Central America by leaving them stranded on the U.S.-Mexico border. hrc.org/blog/the-crisi…
3/ LGBTQ asylum seekers like Cristal, Lorena and Cesar remain in fear living in Mexico as they await their U.S. court dates.
2/ In the earliest hours of June 28, 1969, a group of LGBTQ people reached their tipping point. They were peacefully enjoying the evening at the #Stonewall Inn in New York City when police raided the bar and started hauling out the patrons.
3/ No longer willing to take the harassment and discrimination, the LGBTQ individuals at #Stonewall fought back. Their protest lasted six days … and sparked a movement that is still building today. #Pride2019

“At this moment we have an opportunity to continue our march towards justice…We cannot accept the situation in this country where someone can be married on Sunday and fired on Monday because of who they love.” - @RepJerryNadler on historic passage of the #EqualityAct
1/ Today, @realDonaldTrump praised the actions of his administration & radical lawmakers in places like Kansas & Oklahoma who are licensing anti-LGBTQ discrimination in child welfare services.
Here's what you need to know about the dangerous consequences of measures like these:
2/ Nine states, including 5 states in the last 3 years, have passed laws allowing taxpayer-funded child welfare programs (adoption and foster care services) to pick and choose to whom they provide the services the government has paid them to provide.
3/ These state laws allow agencies to refuse to work with #LGBTQ people, and some also allow them to refuse various medical treatments to LGBTQ children in their care.
This morning brought breaking news that longtime LGBTQ advocate and friend of HRC, Jussie Smollett, was the victim of a possible hate crime attack in which racist, homophobic slurs were hurled as he was reportedly beaten in Chicago.
"This shocking attack on our friend & tremendous advocate Jussie Smollett is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident.
There is an alarming epidemic of hate violence in our country that disproportionately targets Black people, LGBTQ people, and religious minorities -- and particularly those living at the intersections of multiple identities.
1/🚨Mike Pence is on a voter suppression tour this week.
He's stumping alongside Brian Kemp in Georgia, who's being sued for purging 700K voters from the rolls.
Tomorrow, he campaigns in Kansas for Kris Kobach, with whom he led Trump’s discriminatory “Voter Fraud” commission.
2/ In Georgia, civil rights groups are suing gubernatorial candidate @BrianKempGA for enforcing the state’s discriminatory “exact match” requirement — impacting mostly Black voters ahead of the midterms. cnn.com/2018/10/12/pol…
Calling people by the correct pronouns matters. #pronounsday
2/ Some simple steps to honor people's pronouns in the workplace:
✔️Ask about pronouns before assuming
✔️Take care to use a person’s correct pronouns
✔️Remove gendered signs from single-use restrooms
✔️Provide gender-inclusive options on hiring forms #pronounsday
3/ At schools:
➡️Honor the names and pronouns that a student uses.
➡️Create a gender-inclusive dress code. @HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools has tips for educators & administrators on how to make classrooms more inclusive of all identities. #pronounsdaywelcomingschools.org/pages/gender-a…
1/ We’ve spent months on the front lines fighting this nomination. From mobilizing for rallies, sharing stories of survival & making thousands on thousands of calls to senators—including 15,000 @HRC members today.
2/ And we have done that because the stakes of this nomination—for LGBTQ people, for women, for people of color, for survivors of sexual assault—could not be any higher. Across the country, we have turned out to say we #BelieveSurvivors and we must #StopKavanaugh.
3/ Unfortunately @SenatorCollins, @Sen_JoeManchin and others in the U.S. Senate made clear today that they will nevertheless back this dangerous, unqualified nominee. This is a slap in the face to Americans everywhere. #StopKavanaugh
1/ As #SuicideAwarenessMonth draws to a close, we must all reaffirm our commitment to supporting the well-being of LGBTQ youth who are too often made to feel hopeless and alone simply for being who they are. hrc.org/youth
2/ I'm the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was killed because he was gay. In honor of Matthew, our family began the Shepard Foundation, working to erase hate by replacing it with understanding, compassion & acceptance. - @WyoJudyShepard#HRCTwitterTakeovermatthewshepard.org
3/ I am the sister of James Byrd, who was killed because of his race. In remembrance of James, our family began the Byrd Foundation for Racial Healing. We are working to promote healing and diversity through education. - Louvon Harris #HRCTwitterTakeoverthebyrdfoundation.org
2/Images displayed across the media don't begin to capture the horror of what’s happening. Recently, hundreds of us spent Father’s Day holding a vigil at a Border Patrol processing center in McAllen, TX, where ~1,000 kids are held at any given time. —@aijenpoo#HRCTwitterTakeover
3/ We chanted “You are not alone,” as buses passed us. It was the most heartbreaking experience of my life. And separations haven't ended. 3,000+ kids have been separated from their families & dispersed across the US with no plan for reunification. — @aijenpoo#HRCTwitterTakeover
Let’s start with 3 terms:
⚫Migrant: Anyone who chooses to leave their country of origin;
⚫Asylum seeker: Anyone seeking international protection;
⚫Refugee: An official designation for individuals forced to flee their country of origin.
Those of us who love more than one sex/gender use many different labels, but we share a common experience: our presence makes people uncomfortable. Our very existence as #bisexual threatens heteronormativity and the gender binary. —@SaraRamirez#HRCTwitterTakeover
