This Ongoing conversation on Flow Vs BaseCamp Vs Asana is a perfect case study on the complexity of how things happen in the real-world and how single-factor explanations are almost always too simplistic.
This offers a chance to talk about how to assimilate content you consume on internet , process it, and extract gasoline of knowledge from the crude oil Narrative. #badanalogy
Here @awilkinson told his version of events. tipped his hat to the winners ( @asana & @basecamp ) Then @jackiebo refuted it in the thread nested thread above 👆 Claiming there was more to Asana's success than just VC money .
ie @asana too had vision and street/geek creds. They were not just startup equivalent of trust fund kids .To be fair that's how the original thread made them look. I think it was unfair if not outright disingenuous
and then we have @dhh joining the conversation claiming @awilkinson was not true to the ideal. Conveniently forgetting that they too had investment from @JeffBezos via Bezos Expeditions. So as far as being a purist is concerned thats not true.
We are all free to choose our own narrative Every interpretation of reality is biased and partial. That doesn't mean it is educational. As a student of consumer internet that's the approach, I find to be most helpful. To read with skepticism without being cynical.
and BTW Its not like only other people do this partial/selective retelling of history. We do it too. Like this episode of @Radiolab explains we don't access memories we create and construct them wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radio…

Disclaimer: I am no expert in this. This theory is not subjected to statistical rigor and probably I am confusing correlation with causation.
I love studying system dynamics. How Individual performance is often shaped (in great part ) by their environment. If we can identify those environmental levers we can increase the baseline performance for everyone. Here is a case study on the same.
This thread bought back a lot of memories for me. Virtual Gifting is one of the untapped opportunities in the Indian Ecosystem. It's a case study on How we ignore the leading indicator of TAM. Storytime 🧵
In 2011-12 I was working with Spice. We had 20 App portfolio with 50M+ download, 0.5M Unique generating 1.5-2.0M PV in aggregate, 2k-4k $ daily revenue approx . We needed to increase revenue. We were considering Virtual Goods and Gifting.
We presented to management .They were intriuged but There was this one dude, An ex googler turned inhouse Bean counter of spice was totally dismissive and needlessly harsh of potential. "Who in India use this shit? Show me some data about TAM "
This god damn Two Pizza rule. Let me tell you a story about it. In 2013 I was raising funds for my startup . I meet an associate at top VC firm. A freshly minted MBA + consulting guy.who was armed to teeth with every startup clichés. Nice person otherwise. Contd.
I gave very conservative hiring plan of 7 people in a year . 2 backend , 2 front-end , 1 data, 1 QA ,1 Content and CS. He said that's too much ! Why not two pizza team. I liked the guy so I said " that rule is for team not company". Contd.
He insisted: " No ! This plan is very aggressive. How many pizza you need for it . " I said : " Unless we are drunk two pizza will be more than enough". He said : Really? Two Pizza for 7 PPL"
Thanks for your feedback on my thread about NBU. I learned a lot. After much procrastination I am finally doing a follow up. Here are few more of notes from my @NotionHQ notebook.Original thread is here 👇for Ref and Continuity: 1/n
Picking up where we left last time ie: #dukaantech . The biggest business goal of shopkeepers is to get a bigger share of grocery bulk shopping done at Wholesale market at the start of the month. Explained 👇2/n
A family buys 15KG of rice per month. They buy 10KG in the start of the month from the wholesale market and then keep replenishing it 1KG at a time (on credit) from neighbourhood shop. Credit is paid next month after payday and before a trip to wholesale market. 3/n
A thread on observations about the behavior of Next Billion Users (NBU) and how they use products and services we build: 1/n
I have spent the last few months in Bikaner, A tier 2 city in Rajasthan. Here I got to observe our users from a distance while still being part of context. Some of what I noticed was contrary to the ideas we have in the industry about our users.2/n
I am writing this thread to (1) Validate: is it just me and my sampling bias or others also observe the same patterns? (2) As we build products for the next billion users ( NBU) these observations might help us build a more representative persona for our users. 3/n
A couple of days back I finished reading Alchemy: The Surprising Power of Ideas That Don't Make Sense by Rory Sutherland. It's an interesting book. A thread on key takeaways 1/n amazon.in/s?k=alchemy+ro…
This is a book about Logic and how it dominates all sphere of decision making and how by focusing exclusively on logic we are missing out on a bigger force psycho-logic .2/n
Logic is usually the best way to succeed in an argument, but if you want to succeed in life it is not necessarily all that useful.3/n
