Parents, grandparents, extended family:
Everyone feels happier when they've got space, permission, and encouragement to be themselves. Here are some adjustments you can make to your home and family to help your #autistic child thrive.

Be Their Rock
You are their most trusted people in the world. If you can’t understand and appreciate them, who can? If your child or young person is attached to you to the point of separation anxiety, be patient.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Give Them Space
Give your child emotional space regularly. Make it part of their emotional regulation routine.
They will need an area where they can be left to chill out/decompress. This might not be their bedroom.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Don’t Ply Them With Questions
We all want to know what’s been happening at school, but hold off on the 20 Questions. If your child needs to chill, quite possibly on their own, you are not going to get the answers you want.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Embrace the Stimming
Don’t make a fuss about stimming. Stimming is a comfort reaction. We all do things to comfort ourselves, and we can be comfortable with our child’s favourite (safe) stim when they are overloaded.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Respect & Join In Their Intense Interests
Be understanding about special interests. Don’t mock them or say they’re weird. Show interest, have conversations, join them in their happy place. These interests are comforting.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptanceMonth
Don’t ban screens
Whatever 'experts' say, don’t use removal of screentime as a threat. A mobile phone, especially for teens, can act as a constant emotional regulation. It can feel like a lifeline of easier social communication, so to take it away is to immediately dysregulate.
Try Not To Explode
We all get cross sometimes. But for your autistic child, it may be confusing & scary if you or teachers shout. The more you understand them, the less cross you’ll get about misunderstandings between different neurotypes.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptance
Embrace Routine
Routines they have helped design are important for your child. There’s a reason why they want you to drive the same route to school every day. Sameness feels safe. Change can = uncertainty.
#AutismAwarenessWeek #AutismAcceptance
Remember You Are a Sanctuary Too
Parents remember you are your child’s safe person. You are the one they trust to fix things. You are the one they want to tell things. Promise to not be offended, to be open-minded, not judgemental, & not to overreact.

Dear #edutwitter, particularly those of you in Mainstream Secondaries: our closed group is full of current crises for Yr7 girls, diagnosed #autistic and also awaiting assessment, who are absolutely breaking. Harming, not eating, in full blown panic mode, anxiety attacks 1/
... showing signs of potential co-occurring debilitating serious MH conditions like OCD & eating disorders. Some have been rejected from #CAMHS following referral. Some have been accepted but the waiting lists are so very very long. We’re asking for increased awareness of the 2/
...disparate experiences of #autistic pupils in secondary, but in particular #AutisticGirls.

As hugely committed teachers we know you’re also probably on your knees professionally & personally, that you have so much responsibility to fulfill. And we thank you for all you do 3/
