This is a long time coming, given both the long-standing partnership & Microsoft's interest in #AI & natural language.

The only real question is why $msft waited so long. This could have happened 18 months ago for 1/3 the price. Nuance has been around a long time

#NLP #NLG 1/6
Although Nuance is best known for its Dragon software, the initial value here comes from the healthcare relationship that has blossomed since 2019 news.microsoft.com/2019/10/17/nua…
Over time, Microsoft will gain additional value in integrating Nuance with Teams, Dynamics, Linkedin, and Power BI to create a variety of speech-based inputs & interfaces.
It's also interesting to note that Nuance powers Apple's Siri and Microsoft is now a more foundational player in voice recognition & voice-driven computer interfaces.
But this acquisition is fundamentally driven by healthcare, where Microsoft sees Nuance-driven opportunities alone driving a $250 billion TAM. Given Microsoft's focus, this could spell trouble for Nuance's general use solutions.
Nuance provides Microsoft with a transformational opportunity to improve Cortana, Dynamics, Power BI, Teams, and Office365. The big question is whether Nuance will become the new interface or whether Microsoft will focus the Nuance team on healthcare.

Apple fails to market the iPhone 12 Pro to the average consumer

My take: One of Apple's traditional strengths has been translating technical capabilities into household tasks. That seems to be receding with time. (Add'l analysis below)
cnbc.com/2020/10/14/app… by @jbursz 1/7
The odd part is that the technical capabilities of the iPhone 12 do translate to a more personal phone: take the outdoors home with you, augment your world, get a smarter phone. 5 nm chips are much smarter than any other iPhone ever. 2/7
But Apple fell for the hype of its partners with 5G and 5nm rather than the personal, high-end, affordable luxury game changer branding that has made Apple a juggernaut. 3/7

Between @8x8 & @zoom_us, @OracleCloud is setting itself as the cloud for real-time networking challenges: daily, global multi-PB transport challenges

While other cloud vendors focus on data gravity, Oracle shines at cost-effective data velocity

prnewswire.com/news-releases/…
I like this approach because, frankly, Oracle has to differentiate its Cloud offerings to stand out when Amazon, Microsoft, & Google obviously also have strong offerings. Moving past commodity storage & compute to also have a differentiated real-time cloud is smart.
And I think there's a new generation of streaming applications that are going to come out of the #COVID19 quarantine as we become more used to video & audio content. For instance, just imagine Twitch-like payments on Zoom & other meeting solutions which will require faster cloud

Congratulations to @datarobot on acquiring @Paxata. This is an interesting acquisition for multiple reasons.

1) Data prep is a necessary aspect of machine learning and applied AI. Prep is currently the biggest part of the data scientist's job

techcrunch.com/2019/12/12/dat…
2) this acquisition shows @datarobot's perspective that data prep is more of a feature than a market. Just as every enterprise app platform needs BI, every standalone AI platform will require prep.
3) Paxata's product roadmap was already heavily AI focused, both in providing AI-enabled prep and in aligning data prep to AI model selection. This acquisition will accelerate Paxata's progress.

The Amazon Braket announcement is an interesting one for #quantumcomputing on multiple levels.

First, Amazon is not providing a hosted service, but is serving more as an aggregator of technology approaches while working on being an application developer layer. #reInvent
This approach of supporting @dwavesys @IonQ_Inc & @rigetti are three different approaches: quantum annealing, trapped ion, and full stack on a quantum coprocessor, respectively.

These are very different approaches to #quantumcomputing.

#reInvent
Abstracting all of these approaches on Jupyter seems like a bit of a "figure it out yourself" approach rather than actively pushing the #quantumcomputing era forward.

Just a side note that we're not supposed to take pictures for the actual Obama speech, so upcoming tweets will be text only

Leading into the Obama talk, we get Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" playing in the background.
