Year after year, the data on maternal health outcomes tell a similar story: Rates of pregnancy-related mortality in the US are among the worst of high-income countries, and are more than 3x higher among Black women than among white women. #BMHW21 cdc.gov/reproductivehe…
At their root, these disparities result from systemic racism and discrimination & reflect broader societal inequities. They have also been magnified during the #COVID19 pandemic. Policymakers and medical institutions must acknowledge this reality & take action. #BlackMamasMatter
Improving the quality of #maternalhealth care & ensuring full access to it is critical to addressing these unacceptable outcomes. Many US states are working to do this by establishing committees to investigate maternal deaths & by expanding maternal health services. #BMHW21
48 states, DC, NYC, Philadelphia & Puerto Rico have MMRCs or legal requirements to review pregnancy-related deaths. But there’s room for improvement: Only 7 states investigate or consider racial disparities & equity in reviews. #BMHW21 guttmacher.org/state-policy/e…
In 2020, several states took steps to address #maternalhealth, incl by expanding Medicaid coverage for postpartum care to 6 months, improving care for incarcerated people & strengthening maternal mortality review committees through better data collection & information sharing.
So far in 2021, 41 states & DC have measures pending to improve access to maternal and pregnancy care, including provisions to expand access to #doula services, require implicit bias training for providers and expand the scope of MMRCs. Legislation is moving in 18 states & DC.
As #COVID19 continues, we need to keep building on efforts to protect Black mamas—including at the federal level. Congress should pass the Black Maternal Health #Momnibus proposed by the @BMHCaucus to comprehensively address US maternal health disparities. #BlackMamasMatter

🚨 BREAKING: The FDA will not require in-person dispensing of abortion pills for the duration of the #COVID19 pandemic! In addition to safety benefits, telehealth is a critical option for people experiencing financial hardship, lack of child care & homeschooling responsibilities.
This is a long overdue first step, but it’s far from enough. @US_FDA should now review all the restrictions it currently places on abortion pills in light of the full body of scientific evidence and real-world use, and modify or remove them accordingly. #SafeButStillObstructed
The scientific evidence is clear: #MedicationAbortion is safe and effective, and has a stellar track record of more than 20 years of use in the United States.
Rep. @rosadelauro opens the hearing: The Hyde Amendment is a discriminatory policy. The time has come to reckon with the norm, and view it through the lens of how it impacts communities of color. #BeBoldEndHyde
Rep. @rosadelauro: Now is the time to empower all women to be able to make deeply personal life decisions without politicians inserting themselves into the doctor’s office. #BeBoldEndHyde
At today’s #SCOTUS confirmation hearing, we heard from Crystal Good about her experiences overcoming obstacles to get an abortion as a minor. Her testimony reflects the reality of many young people who need abortion care all across the US. #ThankCrystaljudiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/…
Young people deserve access to the full spectrum of sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion care. Yet, many state legislatures have imposed special barriers that force minors to involve their parents in their decision to have an abortion. gu.tt/39M8e7f
Laws that mandate parental involvement—for either notification or approval by one or both parents—are unnecessary, deny young people’s bodily autonomy, and can add logistical and financial burdens to abortion care.
BREAKING: Today the US State Department released its review of the harmful #GlobalGagRule. The results? In short, the report identified tangible harms caused by the policy that extend well beyond family planning programs to a range of other health programs. #SRHR
Rather than serving public health, the #GlobalGagRule curtails access to essential clinical services & strips health care providers of their ability to serve the needs of their patients. More on the harms of this discriminatory policy ↓ gu.tt/2Scpg8m
35 million abortions take place every year in unsafe conditions, leading to about 23,000 preventable pregnancy-related deaths. The US has a critical role to play in making abortion care safe & accessible for all, but the #GlobalGagRule runs counter to that responsibility.
