Succeeding in online communities (and life in general):

[A thread]
1) Be a part of the community, not a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Join communities to be a PEER, not to get something from people.

"You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want." (Zig Ziglar)
2) Help people.

You don't even need to be an expert to help people.

Saying thanks to someone and explaining how they've helped you is an underrated help to the person posting, and the community.

Even just liking a comment helps the author get more visibility.
3) Be SEEN to help people.

Rampant in Facebook groups is where people ask for help and get a load of "DM me" responses.

That's a missed opportunity.

#helpinpublic

Thank me later.
4) Be seen by COMMUNITY OWNERS helping people in their community.

Be the type of person they want in their community.

(Do NOT do this as a sneaky tactic to get on someone's radar. People can sense intention.)
I’ve lost count of the number of groups and forums I've joined where the group owner reaches out and thanks me for helping the group and increasing engagement.

"Be so good they can't ignore you."

When your back's against a wall...

Our mortgage payment was due in 2 days and I was staring at an empty warchest.

I was given 2 pieces of advice that enabled me to sign up a new client the very next day.
1/ Breathe.

Nothing's so bad you can't make it worse by panicking and doing something stupid.
2/ Send hand crafted emails or DMs to everyone you worked with.

Make it friendly, short, and non-needy.

THE MOST IMPORTANT TRAFFIC GENERATION TIP

- Been a media buyer since 2009.

- Managed a team of 35 Google Ads specialists spending €120k/day.

- Built 120m keywords & ads so a startup could acquire 15k signups a day.

The most important tip I learned over the years?

[A thread]
Stop calling it traffic.

Thanks for reading this public service announcement.

Signed up my first client via Twitter on Monday.

Learnings
👇

1/ They contacted me over a week ago.

We had a Zoom last week.

I sent an invoice Monday.

They paid on Monday, which is when I officially signed up a new client.
LEARNING 1:

Until money hits your account they are NOT a client.

They're people INTERESTED in becoming a client.

Don't start work until they're actually a client.
2/ They FOUND me by doing a search on Twitter.

My profile showed up in the search results, and likely some of my tweets that contain the search term they used.

This has more to do with optimising my profile, and less to do with tweeting constantly about what I do.

I need a website!

I need more money!

I need to go on a course!

I need a logo!

I need a business partner!

I need a mentor!
Is it possible to run a business without all the things we think we need?

Maybe we're putting all these things in our own way?

To prevent us from starting? (aka procrastination).

To prevent us from shipping? (aka perfectionism).
Because we think we'll fail if we launch?

Because we don't think we're enough?

HOW TO CREATE BATTLE-TESTED CONTENT

- You KNOW helps people at scale

- Brings inbound leads for your service business

- Has people pleading to buy a SHORT course

(WITHOUT NEEDING TO BE AN EXPERT)

[A thread] 👇
STEP 1: Create content you KNOW helps people at scale
1) Find people to help. REPLY and help them - where they are.

- Don't try to get them onto an email list to help them via email.

- Don't try to send them to articles you've written already (unless you've already gone through this process).

THE BIGGEST LANDING PAGE MISTAKE

[A thread] 👇
This mistake is almost universal.

It causes people to do all sorts of stupid things with their landing pages and we see it made over, and over, and over again.

Let's save you from this mistake & give you an advantage over your competitors.
I've had businesses show me their "testing wall" displaying all the landing pages they've used

... the dates the tests ran

... the % conversion rates for each landing page

... the winning landing page picked to go through to the next test.
