"The Egyptian government has deprived Dawoud of nearly two years of his life for no reason other than his opposition to Sisi's crushing of democracy," dawnmena.org/egypt-khaled-d…
DAWN documented Dawoud's unjust prosecution from the moment he was arrested until his release, shedding light on the officials involved in abusing Dawoud's due process rights. The most prominent of these officials, featured in DAWN's culprit gallery, are:
General Prosecutor Hamada Alsawy, who bears overall responsibility for prosecutions; First Attorney of the Supreme State Security Prosecution Khaled Diaa el-Din and Judge Moataz Khafagi, head of the Second Terrorism Circuit of the Giza Criminal Court.
"There was no evidence of any crime, so Judge Moataz Khafagi and Prosecutor Khaled Diaa el-Din used pretrial detention as punishment, sentencing Dawoud to 19 months of mistreatment in prison and separation from his son, ailing father and now-deceased sister,"
Tens of thousands of arbitrarily held detainees are still languishing in prisons for their peaceful dissent or their independent journalism

My reflection on 30 years of working on #Iraq starting with the First Gulf War, for those who remember it. In short, US has made things catastrophically worse. prospect.org/world/now-is-t…
“Purveyors of American empire & Iraqi desperation never tire of offering up fresh justifications to give the US just one more go at a fix. But it really is time fo the US to step aside, as it’s been promising to do for far too long.”
“For those focused on the welfare of the people of Iraq, but still driven, despite the overwhelming evidence of three decades, to seek help from the U.S. government, it’s past time to come to terms with the reality that U.S. policies have never helped the Iraqi people.”

David, why don't you keep telling us about how much progress our mission in #Afghanistan has been making, like the tales you and your pals in the @pentagon spun to the American people for almost two decades? defenseone.com/threats/2021/0…
"A confidential trove of governments..reveals senior US officials failed to tell the truth about war in Afghanistan throughout 18-year campaign, making rosy pronouncements they knew to be false & hiding unmistakable evidence the war had become unwinnable" washingtonpost.com/graphics/2019/…
“If the American people knew the magnitude of this dysfunction . . . 2,400 lives lost,” Lute added, blaming the deaths of U.S. military personnel on bureaucratic breakdowns among Congress, the Pentagon and the State Department. “Who will say this was in vain?”

Lotta talk about recalibrating our relationships w dictators in Middle East from @JoeBiden back when he was a candidate, lotta yang yang from @secblinken & @nedprice @ “human rights”, hold on #UAE arms, but then this:

huffpost.com/entry/biden-un…
Seems the hold on arms to #UAE had zero to do w human rights or reassessing our interests, but wheeling and dealing to extract “concessions” from the emirs: play nice on Iran! 💯 pct guarantee they won’t even do that
Meanwhile #UAE continues to wreak mayhem and conflict in region, arms and military bases in #Libya to support war criminal Haftar; 5 years of bombardment and terror in Yemen; continued proxy forces in South.

Wonderful news of Khaled Dawoud’s release now topped by news of release of #Egypt journalist Solafa Magdy! Cruel and inhumane imprisonment kept her from her family and going son for zero legit reason
For nearly two years Egyptian prosecutors extended her pretrial detention without a shred of evidence to support the charges against her. For full file of abuses see:

dawnmena.org/solafa-magdy-s…
She said: “I chose to be a reporter because of my conviction that profession of journalism is only profession to convey voice of the weak, only one that can change fate of people, only one that can make a difference in societies as long as there is an opportunity for it to do so.

Best #Ramadan news ever with reports that #Egypt journalist #KhaledDawoud has been released from absurd, insane detention in prison. I’ve known Khaled for at least 15 years. Didn’t deserve to spend one minute in prison. 💃🏼🕺🏽 Image
For more on the ridiculous charges the military government in #Egypt brought against this widely respected journalist and secular activist, see:

Khaled has been a professor at @AUC and editor at @AlAhramWeekly - sadly don’t think they lifted a finger to support their colleague, nor issued a signal statement to support him

My latest w @Mikeyeis @DAWNmenaorg in @latimes: "the ironic twist to the administration’s high-mindedness — that the sanctions don’t apply to the man with the real power to permanently silence dissidents — undermines the whole enterprise."
latimes.com/opinion/story/…
"The Biden administration’s decision against penalizing Bin Salman exposes the sanctions as a political tool of expedience, unmoored from the merits of who deserves them."
"Well-meaning senior officials & pundits have patiently explained realpolitik & national security concerns that factored into decision to let MBS walk, a determination not to upset delicate balance of power in Mideast by damaging our longstanding alliance w Saudis."
