This is going to get me nothing but grief but... This Lindsay Ellis thing? TOTALLY LOST THE PLOT. It was not about her to begin with. It was the views that came out of her. We in North America have to collectively become less stupid about media that doesn't originate here. THREAD
(See also, indigenous media) Lindsay Ellis said something stupid, that showed an ignorance of subject. To treat Avatar TLA - as some founding work of a genre linked to Asian animation... it's a chance for other people to learn WHY THAT IDEA US DUMB. BUT IT'S NO LONGER ABOUT THAT
It's about a PERSON now, instead of the shitty comments that came out of that person. And that's the problem with social media. People get attacked and the principles get lost. People still don't get why the Raya/Avatar comments were dummmmmmb as shit.
And it's not my place to pick that up. I'm just boosting the comments of actual Asian people tonight, who have been lost in this whole bizarro cult of personality around Lindsay Ellis. Defend her, trash her, NOT THE POINT. She's not the only one with hegemonic myopia.
Asian art has been shit on in American nerd spaces for too long because we keep forcing our lens on their work. Senren Kagura gets censored while ATLA gets held up as genre defining and Raya is treated as a copy? Yeah, I get why people are pissed.
The calculus tends to be White people on this continent deciding what Asian content is acceptable, then copying it. ATLA was especially bad because it didn't even employ Asian voice actors. It's not appreciation when you don't involve the people from the culture you're borrowing.
Asian people have a right to be pissed. They have a right to say their piece without a bunch of other people drowning them out. They have the right to be heard and understood without people like Lindsay Ellis making it about them. This did not need, nor warrant a 100 minute video
It should have been a video about this specific issue, showing an awareness of what the problem was, that wasn't diluted by an hour and a half of other stuff. Ellis has the right to speak about that other stuff in her time, but she lost the plot here.
These moments of naive hegemonic cultural dominance are not harmless. They prevent growth and change. This is now about Lindsay Ellis instead of the people she hurt and offended, and that's not okay even if the backlash was overblown. This is compounding the original mistake.
We cannot force our perspective on media that does not originate here, then profit off that forced perspective, then erase the original source of inspiration. Just let people be heard for a change, instead of making everything about some stupid interpersonal drama.
TL;DR #StopAsianHate . It's not about you. Listen more, speak less. Everyone needs to get their heads out of our asses. We ALL do it. I've done it. Doesn't make us bad people if we learn from it. That learning involves listening. Your opinion is not essential at every moment.
(PS, I am aware that Senran Kagura is Japanese while Raya is set in Southeast Asia. Also, it's not that white people have to shut up completely. Just share the figurative room and make sure you understand the views of the impacted group. Listen to understand. Not judge.)
And now I am getting off Twitter because I'm not interested in the incoming shit. I'm not special enough to think anyone gives a shit, let alone 100 minutes on me because I got dogpiled online. I KNOW no one really does, and that's fine.

Oh sweet Baby Yoda. Though this is a decent summary of something that got exceedingly & ridiculously out of control.

If you want your meaning of a term to stand, provide it. Don't make someone look it up then dogpile when you don't like what they find.

Btw, I have been open for some time about not having much connection to any gender identity. So claims that I just manufactured that as a convenience are false. It was actually quite a surprise to me that some people feel so strongly connected to that element of themselves.
I've stated numerous times publicly over the years that when I was growing up, the characters I saw myself in were characters like Lion-O from Thundercats and Beast from X-Men. I didn't really connect to "girl characters". I fell into "gender is a social construct" thinking.

There's also this really bad theory out there that a term isn't discriminatory if it's "true" sometimes. Lots of terms have dual meanings depending on how they're applied. The issue is when your label for a person assumes negatives not in evidence.
Take the word "bitch". Imagine if anyone could say "It's not sexist to say you're a bitch because you need to smile more. It's just true. " I had a guy once call me a "fish" to my face. He said it was okay because he's gay and just finds women disgusting. Obviously it's not.
Similarly, some people have a brother named Tom. He's "Uncle Tom" to their kids. But clearly this term has another meaning.

Here's the problem with politics right now... political systems are set up with the understanding that politicians will listen to the people, and not do things that are unethical or unpopular because they'll be voted out of office. Of course, that's not happening. (more)
There's consensus on certain issues that politicians ignore, and I don't think it's about money. I think it's also because they think voters are stupid and don't actually know what's good for them. It's about power corrupting, knowing that pols can work the ref through the media
Politicians know that there are multiple truths in America right now: Fox News - which is a populist fever dream totally divorced from economic conservativism, MSNBC - a mishmash of financial experts, old school newsies, and AOC fan club, and CNN - A cacophony of clickbait

Whether CDPR is crunching its staff is a good fight to have. It's a refreshing change from whether someone is an "SJW" or "Nazi" over a clearly labeled opinion piece. (By "crunch" I mean overworking them to the point of mental or physical illness)
I saw a distinct difference in feedback compared to when people get triggered by identitarian ideology. People who got mad at me provided facts to support their positions, instead of just name calling or resorting to conspiracy theories.
Not all fights are the same. This is not about a theme in a game. This is about workplace conditions. I think we can agree that companies still need to do better AND reward a company like CDPR who, for a change, actually seems to give a shit here.

Was actually feeling motivated for the first time in a year midday yesterday. Then I read post debate coverage on "undecided voters'" terribly unbalanced and unfair reactions to Pence and Harris.
The idea that Kamala Harris, who is running for VICE PRESIDENT, should behave in the fake public docility of "respectable" white women is a huge problem because LEADERS ARE NOT DOCILE. It's easier for Pence to speak in calm tones because he benefits from every assumption.
Kamala Harris is a black woman of Caribbean descent. WHY IS IT BAD THAT SHE HAS MANNERISMS CONSISTENT WITH A BLACK WOMAN OF CARIBBEAN DESCENT? I loved those moments. I thought they were authentic and relatable. Her face reflected what a lot of people thought in those moments.

Okay, since people are still fighting about it, let's talk abt the issue that Last of Us 2 DOES NOT SOLVE: depictions of unattainable bodies. There is not a SINGLE overweight person in the game and, among the WLF, food is shown as rationed. Abby COULD NOT do a body building diet.
Abby also spends weeks on the road on revenge quests. No gym crossing America on horseback. And... sorry kids, that kind of muscle bulk involves drugs. I do not know a single clean body builder who gets THAT big. Drugs are SCARCE.
The issue is NOT whether a particular body type is attractive or not. The issue is whether it's actually achievable without serious health consequences. The way Abby looks is absolutely not a healthy state. It wrecks your health so badly your reproductive cycle is compromised.
