SEQUENCING CLUES—#COVID19 spread on an international flight, in a hotel corridor and then to household contacts despite efforts to isolate & quarantine patients, New Zealand reports. Careful genomic tracing confirmed the spread among 9 patients.

2) “One of those infected had spent 14 days in quarantine after being evacuated on a chartered 747 jet from India to New Zealand last August and had tested negative twice.
Others were infected on flight, even though 1/3 full and passengers were spaced apart from one another.”
3) in Singapore, some travelers tested negative during quarantine and then through routine tests they were found to be positive—serological (antibody) test results were positive too. moh.gov.sg/news-highlight…
4) And infamously, the 7 hotel quarantine outbreak in Australia has been linked to the quarantine hotel cross infection between rooms. See thread 🧵
5) this is why we need much more careful travel rules. For example, 30,000 truck drivers move between US and Canada daily without any required mitigation.
6) And why we need genome sequencing of viruses to pick up both variants and how cases spread. And to discover our mitigation measures aren’t enough sometimes to stop cross border pandemics. We need sequencing scale ups in every country.

✈️ Outbreak—47 positive #COVID19 of a 188 seat Vistara flight from New Delhi to Hong Kong have tested positive, after all tested negative 72 hours prior. The scariest thing? Only 8 detected before they began quarantine. 39 were only identified later during hotel quarantine!🧵 Image

Yup—“Canada’s #COVID19 travel restrictions are an inept, deadly failure”

There is a reason #P1 found Canada 🇨🇦 to easily infiltrate. And good reason 30,000 truck drivers cross the US-Canada border every single day without restrictions. Poor leadership.

2) the problems is that the card itself is genuine. That’s what makes this hard when people secretly resell these untracked blank vaccine cards. Without any public registry to verify, we won’t know. We need a registry!

VACCINE IRONY: "It's almost paradoxical, that on the one hand, they want to be relieved of the restrictions, but on the other hand, they don't want to be vaccinated."

"It just almost doesn't make any sense."

Vaccinate = *more freedom* to live safely.
2) The irony is incredibly insane. Trump-dominated voter districts are much less likely to be vaccinated.
3) And it’s indeed due to greater hesitancy. It’s even a strong correlation with Trump voting fraction.

Co-infection is bad news—Scientists in Brazil have identified two cases where people were simultaneously infected with two different variants of #COVID19. Co-infection raises the likelihood of *recombination* admixture that generates more variants. 🧵

2) According to the study, co-infection raises the possibility of recombination of the genomes of the different strains, which can generate new variants of the coronavirus.
3) "Although there are a few reported cases of reinfection, the possibility of co-infection by E484K adds a new factor to the complex interaction between immune response systems and SARS-CoV-2 Spike mutations," wrote the authors.
