Diana Garlington fondly recalls the last Thanksgiving she spent with her daughter, Esscence T. Christal. "We laughed, danced, reminisced & ended with taking our family photo. She clung tightly to my arm and insisted on sitting on my lap for what would be unreadily our last time.”
The following day, Esscence was killed in a drive-by shooting, leaving behind a young son. She was just 21. The pain of Esscence’s death is worsened by the fact that her case remains unsolved. “Since her demise, she has been left in a file and given a number,” Diana said.
In the 3,431 days that Diana has gone without answers about Esscence’s killing, she has worked with organizations such as RI Coalition Against Gun Violence, One Gun Gone, and Moms Demand Action to support gun violence survivors.
THREAD: It’s been a truly devastating week in America as gun violence continues to plague our communities and tear our families apart.
Eight people were shot and killed and five others were wounded when a gunman opened fire at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis last night.
This shooting comes on the heels of mass shootings in Baltimore County, MD, Orange, CA, Boulder, CO, Allen, TX, Rock Hill, SC, and a series of shootings at massage parlors around Atlanta where six of the victims were women of Asian descent.
When asked directly "to condemn white supremacists and militia groups and to say that they need to stand down," Pres. Trump told the Proud Boys––a far right Islamophobic and misogynist hate group––to “stand back and stand by" during last night's debate. twitter.com/i/events/13111…
The Proud Boys rejoiced at Trump’s implicit endorsement & decision not to condemn white supremacy. Members immediately began sharing the group's logo with his words, and started selling a “Stand By” shirt.
The Proud Boys, founded by a noted racist, anti-Semite, and Islamophobe, are a group of violent, far-right extremists who often express racist beliefs. They have appeared alongside other hate groups at extremist gatherings like the ‘Unite the Right’ rally in Charlottesville.
Donald Trump’s refusal to take action to address gun violence has brought us four deadly years. Ahead of tonight’s first #PresidentialDebate of 2020, here are some facts about Trump’s paltry record on gun safety voters should know:
On every level Donald Trump has refused to take action to address gun violence, and his failures have brought us four deadly years. In fact, more than 145K Americans have died by gun violence under his watch. #Debates2020
The gun lobby spent $31 million to elect Trump. Since then, Trump has shaped U.S. gun policy to the gun lobby’s demands, not the vast majority of Americans who want action on gun safety. #Debates2020
More than 141K Americans have died from gun violence during Donald Trump’s presidency — an average of over 100 people every day. Even more have been wounded. Here are 8 ways Pres. Trump, with help from the NRA, has failed to keep Americans safe from gun violence. ⬇️ #RNC2020
Pres. Trump vowed to veto common-sense background check legislation: Over a year ago, the U.S. House passed #HR8—a bill to require background checks on all gun sales. The bill has sat on Mitch McConnell’s desk ever since, because he and Pres. Trump refuse to support it. #RNC2020
After the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso, Pres. Trump promised to support life-saving Red Flag laws, but took no action. Red Flag laws allow temporary removal of firearms from those who pose a threat to themselves or others. #RNC2020
A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder for the shooting deaths of 2 protestors in Kenosha, WI. A third person was injured. Videos circulating online appear to show the teen gathering with other armed vigilantes prior to the shooting. thedailybeast.com/kyle-rittenhou…
While details are still emerging, one thing is clear: Weak gun laws enable the kind of armed vigilantism that we are seeing at protests across the country.
In fact, in 41 states, it is perfectly legal to openly carry loaded, semi-automatic rifles in public without a permit, even at tension-filled protests. Armed intimidation can escalate quickly into gun violence, as we saw tragically play out in Kenosha early this morning.
