A paper published by physicians at Washington University in St. Louis found "States that restrict abortion have higher maternal mortality than states that either protect or are neutral towards abortion...”. /1 salon.com/2021/04/19/the…
The authors note that “it’s not simply women dying because they wanted an abortion and couldn’t get one” though there are situations like that. It’s also likely that “states that restrict abortion may have broader hostility towards women’s health”. /2
Dr. Andante, an OB-GYN and co-author noted “the legislatures are ‘really prioritizing passing anti-abortion legislation’”. By decreasing access to care, making it more difficult to get contraceptive care, slashing family planning, states are not prioritizing women’s health.
I’m going to sound like a broken record here. But last year, there were 39 surgical abortions in the state of Missouri. Missouri has a high maternal mortality rate. Just this session, there were 16 bills submitted in Missouri’s House and Senate restricting abortion.
Missouri has problems. *Real* problems. Not Fox News-conservative talk radio generated problems. Real women are dying in this state. But instead of addressing *that* problem, Republicans are laser focused on abortion.
There are ways to lower abortion rates. It’s been studied. It’s really common-sense. Prevent unwanted pregnancies. But to do that, would require 1) increased access to contraception and 2) honest, open and scientifically correct sex education.
So just like COVID-19, Republicans want to *complain* about the problem, in this case abortion, but they don’t really want to do anything to actually address the problem. Why not? Abortion is one of the biggest motivating factors that gets their voters to the polls.
Honestly, I can think of no better phrase to describe the state of Missouri right now than “hostile”. This article applies the descriptor to women’s health. But the state is hostile - to science, to truth, to facts, to the health of its citizens. Just hostile. #moleg

The person that will serve as acting director of Missouri’s DHSS, Robert Knodell, was in charge of COVID-19 vaccine distribution in Missouri. Just a reminder that the populous, urban areas of the state, had inadequate access to the COVID vaccine until FEMA stepped in. /1 ImageImage
Knodell’s vaccine distribution plan resulted in thousands of Missourians criss-crossing the state to obtain vaccination appointments and doses being wasted because they were sent to areas of the state with low interest in receiving a vaccine. /2
Knodell has NO prior medical, public health or scientific experience. He is a political consultant having served as an advisor to former Speaker of the Missouri House John Diehl, who resigned when an affair with a college intern was uncovered. /3

A measure of where we are in the Missouri GOP pre-primary to replace Roy Blunt in the Senate. If we thought the GOP was moving back toward anything remotely resembling reality, guess again. Thread 🧵/1
Rep. Jason Smith is gunning for the “Biden’s Not My President” with daily take-downs of policies that have 70% approval among the voting public. Four years of kissing Trump’s orange piles seems to be paying off. He’s garnered an audience with some of Q-elite in elected office.
Rep. Ann Wagner has staked out the Bible verse, pro-life fan club. But occasionally she likes to remind voters that her pro-life ideology stops where her support of the pro-murder, “everyone gets a death machine” second amendment starts. Irony 🚨 she’s also anti-human trafficking

I was listening in the car to @Timodc on @DeadlineWH and he said something about Republicans that I’ve been saying about our Missouri legislature for awhile - it’s just a game to them. /1
The GOP holds a supermajority in Missouri’s legislature. Instead of addressing the very real problems in our state, the bills they propose are parodies of the farthest right wing wish list. The more a piece of legislation triggers the libs, the better./2
Voter ID and restrictive early voting? Sure, why not. Banning IUDs and the morning after pill? You got it. Requiring medically unnecessary pelvic exams for women seeking a medication abortion? Absolutely. Attacking transgender kids and their families? Hell yeah. /3

Neither the police or the paramedics gave the chief resident information about Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck. This means the physicians had no idea an accurate length of time that blood flow to Floyd’s brain had been comprised. #ChauvinTrial
Physician who treated Floyd on the importance of immediate CPR: “Any amount of time a patient spends in cardiac arrest without immediate CPR markedly decreases the chance of a good outcome. Approx. 10-15% decrease in survival for every minute that CPR is not administered.”
By not immediately starting CPR or allowing bystanders to begin CPR, the officers decreased the chance of George Floyd’s survival - no matter the precipitating event.

One thing that might be hampering vaccine supply/demand in Missouri is that the vaccine is being distributed by percentage of population. However, the priority populations (based on Missouri’s Phases and Tiers) are NOT proportionately distributed throughout the state. /1
The disparities I’m going to focus on fall along two main categories: Employment classifications and race. First, let’s deal with employment classifications. Currently eligible for vaccination in Missouri are people in the following jobs: /2
But as you can see from these maps pulled from the BLS, employment in these occupations are not evenly distributed throughout Missouri. /3
