Wow. Ok. Some pretty big @ApplePodcasts announcements for podcasters at today's #AppleEvent.

I'm still digging through it, but here's a thread with some quick thoughts.

First, in true Apple fashion, they didn't let me (or @TransistorFM) know any of this was coming.

There was speculation, but no official word from anyone at Apple.

The only thing we knew was yesterday, as reported by @Podnews, submissions went offline. Image
There's a total refresh of Apple's Podcast Connect.

Lots of new features: "ability to edit metadata, organize shows into channels, manage multiple users and roles." Looks like new analytics too.

I haven't been able to access it yet. Anyone else have luck? Image
From Apple's screenshots, it looks like "normal" podcasters will finally be able to edit "hosts and guests," and may be able to view ratings and reviews globally?

It seems you can also identify your show's publishing frequency (weekly, monthly, etc) Image
Ok. This is weird.

The original press release linked to a website called Apple Podcasts for Creators: podcaster.apple.com

It was up for awhile, but now appears to be offline? ImageImage
Weird. podcasters.apple.com is apparently the new URL and site for podcast creators. Image
Does anyone know why @hearluminary is being featured under "Paid podcasts" on the new @ApplePodcasts site?

Did Apple acquire them, or are they just a paid podcast partner?

Are they abandoning their app and just doing a rev-share with Apple now? (30% first year, 15% after that?) Image
Does anyone here have access to the new @ApplePodcasts app?

I’m curious: can you still manually add an RSS feed to it?

transistor.fm/add-podcast/
One question: how will Apple treat existing paid private podcasts, where subscribers manually add RSS feeds to the player?

@benthompson, @gruber, @SamHarrisOrg, and others use this strategy currently.

Will that go away? (Will they be forced to shared 30% of revenue with Apple?)
Ok. After a long wait, I'm now able to access Apple's new Podcast Connect.

Looks good! Definitely cleaner. A few new options.

The most helpful improvement is being able to see all your podcast reviews in one place. ImageImage
Getting multiple reports that people’s podcasts have disappeared from @ApplePodcasts.

(I’m assuming this is a temporary glitch) ImageImage

Curious about Apple's new Podcasts Connect?

I just got access and tried to submit a new podcast RSS feed.

Here's how it went...
It took about 10+ hours before I was able to get access to my existing Apple Podcasts Connect account and see the podcasts I already had active on Apple Podcasts.

Overall, the new interface feels cleaner. 👍
For existing podcasters, the biggest improvement is Apple Podcasts' new analytics.

You can drill into each episode, and see where listener drop-off occurred.

Really helpful feedback if you're trying to optimize your show. 💯

🎙️ Want me to help improve your podcast's listing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc?

(One of the best ways to get more listeners is to improve your show's "packaging:" cover art, title, description)

Reply to this thread with a link to your pod, and I'll record a video for you. 👉
More info here.

(Note, I'll be publishing these videos publicly so everyone can learn. 👍)

If you're selling anything online, pay attention to these two variables:

1. Unit economics: how profitable is one "unit" of your product or service? (one digital download, 1 month of MRR)

2. Sales volume: how many units can you sell every month?
📊 Unit economics

Think about a musician. 👩‍🎤🎸

## She used to make:

🎵 On iTunes:
Retail price: $0.99 / track
Artist profit: $0.69 / track

## But now she makes:

🟢 On Spotify:
Artist profit: $0.007 / stream

Her profit per unit has gone WAY down.
📉 Sales volume

🎵 On iTunes, an artist needed to sell 3,623 tracks to earn $2,500 in a month.

🟢 On Spotify, she needs to get 357,143 streams to earn $2,500 in a month.

Because of poor unit economics, the volume required to hit baseline has gone WAY up.

“Treating social media providers as [a public utility] threatens to convert natural monopoly or essential facility claims into self-fulfilling prophecies.”

mercatus.org/system/files/P…
Odd to see folks advocating that Twitter should be a “government controlled utility.”

So, you want to fight censorship by giving a central government control over the big social media platforms?

(Personally, as a citizen, I’m more afraid of being censored by the government)
A central totalitarian government controlling communication channels is the literal definition of “Orwellian.” Image

The President can literally text every phone in America.

newsweek.com/fema-test-pres…
The President could also, conceivably, send a letter to every citizen:

washingtonpost.com/politics/his-n…
The President can also communicate on all these channels:

- National televised address
- News conference (with every major outlet in the world present)
- A massive email list
- Government websites
- His own website
- Emergency broadcast system
- LinkedIn 😜

Business success is a function of:

📈 how much demand there is for what you’re selling

👍 how much of that demand you can capture and satisfy

💸 how much it costs you to capture that demand and create customer satisfaction

🔁 how repeatable the whole process is
📈 To figure out how much demand is there for what you’re selling, ask:

- How have you seen demand for X demonstrated?
- How many people are paying for something similar?
- If they’re not currently paying, is there a strong enough pull for them to pay?
👍 To determine how much demand you can capture, ask:

- what unfair advantage do you have in this category?
- what unfair advantage do you have when it comes to distribution?
- what will cause people to switch to your product?
- what product gaps do you see?
